Intracranial Eeg Patient Analysis: Seizure Reduction In Refractory Epilepsy Following Depth Electrode Insertion, Shreyashish Roy-Chowdhury

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Rationale: The implantation effect describes an immediate reduction in seizure frequency following the insertion of intracranial electrodes. There is limited information regarding which patients will experience a reduction of seizures and the reason for the implantation effect. This study focuses on describing predictor factors for the reduction in seizure frequency in patients with medically resistant epilepsy implanted with depth electrodes.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 89 patients who underwent intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) monitoring with depth electrodes. Sixty-five of these patients had no subsequent therapeutic interventions and had a 3-6 month follow-up. Patients were grouped as either responders …

Screen-Viewing Among Young Children In Childcare: An Updated Systematic Review, Leann Blake Aug 2022

Screen-Viewing Among Young Children In Childcare: An Updated Systematic Review, Leann Blake

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Screen-viewing is one of the main forms of sedentary activity in which young children engage (De Decker et al., 2013). Despite health risks of sedentary behaviour in the early years being well documented (Statistics Canada, 2019), there remains a lack of research focusing on sedentary activities within the context of childcare settings in which children participate. The purpose of the current systematic review is to update and expand on Vanderloo’s (2014) systematic review and provide a synthesis of all relevant research on the levels of screen-viewing among young children (0-5 years) attending childcare (i.e., centre-and home-based childcare). In addition, this …

A Review Of Accessibility And Return To Sport (Covid-19) Policy In Provincial And Territorial Sport Organizations Across Canada, Elias Boussoulas Aug 2022

A Review Of Accessibility And Return To Sport (Covid-19) Policy In Provincial And Territorial Sport Organizations Across Canada, Elias Boussoulas

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Issues with lack of accessibility in sport for those with both physical and mental disabilities have been prevalent throughout Canada. In order to understand and address these concerns, we must first review the provincial and territorial sport structure as well as accessibility policy in each provincial/territorial sport organization across Canada.

As a result of COVID-19, many provincial and territorial sport organizations found challenges in returning to play successfully while following provincial and territorial phased plans. The setbacks and restrictions put in place created a difficult environment for organizations to return to play, and without a sport-specific Return to Sport plan many …

Metabolomic Approach For Earlier Diagnosis Of Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury, Steven Xiu, James (Yong Jin) Lim Aug 2022

Metabolomic Approach For Earlier Diagnosis Of Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury, Steven Xiu, James (Yong Jin) Lim

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent complicated by its dose-limiting nephrotoxicity. This commonly presents as acute kidney injury (AKI), which is characterized by a reversible decline in kidney function. AKI is currently diagnosed by increased serum creatinine (SCr) levels, but this rise in SCr is delayed limiting diagnosis to when significant renal damage has already occurred. Currently, there are no known biomarkers capable of predicting or diagnosing early-stage cisplatin-induced AKI. Metabolomics was used to identify novel predictive/early diagnostic biomarkers for cisplatin-induced AKI. We hypothesized that differences in metabolic profiles will be able to predict and/or diagnose cisplatin-induced AKI prior to rise …

Methodological Challenges In Pharmacoeconomic Submissions For Cancer Drug Reimbursement In Canada From 2019-2021, Nupur Krishnan Aug 2022

Methodological Challenges In Pharmacoeconomic Submissions For Cancer Drug Reimbursement In Canada From 2019-2021, Nupur Krishnan

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, carrying a mortality rate of 1 in 4 Canadians. As new therapeutic options are developed, high drug costs place a huge burden on patients and the healthcare system. Due to budget limitations, not all pharmaceuticals can be publicly funded, so difficult decisions must be made for which drugs are funded and in what contexts. The pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review (pCODR) evaluates submissions for new oncological pharmaceuticals to make reimbursement recommendations. Comprehensive analyses assessing limitations in recent oncology drug submissions have not yet been performed. The objective of this project, therefore, was …

Converting Clinical Orientation Materials From Paper To Electronic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Bigand Jun 2022

Converting Clinical Orientation Materials From Paper To Electronic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Bigand

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background:

In one region including 4 hospitals, acute care nurses historically met with professional development practitioners (PDP) and received binders containing printed, specialty-specific policies and a competency checklist (required to be signed and returned to the nurse leader) upon new hire or transfer. Creating physical orientation packets is costly, time-consuming, and restricts the ability to share appropriate orientation materials in the event of a PDP sick call. Real-time communication between the orientee, preceptor, PDP, and nurse leader regarding status of the competency checklist cannot occur with a physical binder. Providing electronic onboarding materials is a potential solution.

Purpose:

To …

Synthesis Of Curcumin Derivatives: Increasing Compound Stability, Chloe Wilke Jun 2022

Synthesis Of Curcumin Derivatives: Increasing Compound Stability, Chloe Wilke

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Curcumin (C21H20O6), the main active component in the spice Turmeric, has many recognized health benefits ranging from anti-inflammatory agents to the suppression of the proliferation of tumors. Curcumin has been used worldwide as an antiseptic and treatment for inflammatory conditions, arthritis, and sepsis. This water-insoluble molecule is unstable and degrades quickly upon entering the body. In order to preserve the beneficial structure of curcumin before it is broken down by the digestive system, carbohydrates are attached to alter the compound, increasing polarity and solubility. This topic was researched by analyzing multiple journal articles and …

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Challenges In Everyday Life, Chloe Wilke Jun 2022

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Challenges In Everyday Life, Chloe Wilke

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is one of the leading mental illnesses in the United States, affecting 6.8 million adults. Having a mental disorder can lead to stigmatization, isolation, and changes in interpersonal relations. The recent psychiatric approach to these types of diseases equates them to physical illnesses in both importance and concern. This project will examine articles and journals that include social context for mental illness along with current issues that are prevalent in society such as treatments and social stigmas. Discrediting, rejection, and ostracization based on bias and prejudices result in lower self-esteem, contributing to the severity or presence of …

Education For Patients And Caregivers To Reduce 30-Day Readmissions Into Acute Care, Tyler W. Taylor

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

The purpose of this capstone project was to reduce 30-day readmissions of patients into the acute care setting by developing, enhancing, and implementing education materials for patients and their caregivers during occupational therapy treatment sessions. Patients who experience unplanned readmissions into acute care within 30 days are subjected to disruption in occupations, functional decline, occupational deprivation, and role strain and stress on caregivers and families. All patients with occupational therapy orders from a physician that matched certain criteria received this treatment. However, only readmission rates for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure (HF), pneumonia, and cerebrovascular accident …
