Salbutamol Residues In Swine Tissues And Body Fluids After Feeding, Jen Hung Ming, Hsiang Huang Han, Ling Chen Chao, Jen Wu Yu, Katie Marie Dixon, Liang Mao Chi

Salbutamol residues in swine tissues and fluids were investigated. Tissue, serum and urine samples were collected from 33 pigs after 14 days of oral administration of 3 ppm salbutamol. The concentrations of salbutamol were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and further confirmed by capillary electrophoresis. The highest urinary concentration of salbutamol was 145.12 ng/ml at 18 hour and remained detectable for 30 days after the last feeding. Salbutamol was undetectable in serum samples. The highest concentrations of salbutamol in liver, kidney, lung, heart, brain and muscle were 70.42 ng/g, 31.88 ng/g, 26.06 ng/g, 6.76 ng/g, 3.41 ng/g and 2.97 ng/g, …

The Contribution Of Active Efflux In Reduced Susceptibilities To Copper Sulfate And Zinc Chloride In Escherichia Coli Isolates From Swine, Chailai Koowatananukul, Nisit Chansong, Rungtip Chuanchuen

A hundred-eighty Escherichia coli isolates from swine were tested for minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 9 antimicrobials and two heavy metals copper sulfate and zinc chloride. All the E. coli isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 175 (97.2%) isolates were multi-drug resistant. Forty antibiotic resistance patterns were identified, of which the most common pattern was AMP-CHP-CIP-ERY-GEN-STR-SUL-TET-TRI (13.3%). All the isolates formed one large population of susceptibility to copper sulfate and zinc chloride at the concentrations of 6.4-12.8 mM and 3.2-6.4 mM, respectively. Exposure to copper sulfate and zinc chloride at sublethal concentration did not change the susceptibility. …

The efficacy of microsatellite markers was evaluated in order to use in parentage control in swine. Genomic DNA from 80 samples were extracted, and amplified using 16 microsatellite markers (D00768, KVL9000, NLRIP0001, S0663, S0710, S0719, S0766, SJ859, SJ923, SJ924, SJ925, SJ926, SJ927, SJ929, X53085 and X63893) in each single polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR products were analyzed using agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). The result showed that 15 microsatellite loci could be amplified except SJ925. Seven suitable microsatellite markers were selected for parentage control, including D00768, KVL9000, NLRIP0001, S0663, S0710, S0719, and S0766. Allelic numbers of the selected …

The amount of new information of the last seven years regarding Lawsonia intracellularis sensitivity to antimicrobial drugs, prevention/control based on treatment and vaccination, diagnosis and, finally, genome is amazing. Nevertheless, not much is known about the epidemiology of the disease, mainly regarding the source of infection, resistance of the bacteria in the environment and possible biological vectors that could spread the infection among farms. A hundred twenty weaned crossbred pigs of Duroc Jersey and Landrace-Largewhite, weighing an average of 6.55 ± 0.62 kg were divided into three groups. The forty animals of each group were kept separately in four battery cages; each cage consisted of five males and five females. Brucellosis and pseudorabies lead to abortion in pregnant sows and are perpetuated by feral swine reservoirs. A multivalent oral vaccine for these diseases would improve vaccination and eradication programs worldwide. Previous studies have shown that the rough attenuated Brucella strains RB51 and VTRS1, when administered subcutaneously to swine, stimulate host immune responses, transiently colonize tissues, and provide partial protection against virulent B. suis infection in pregnant sows. A plasmid encoding for the pseudorabies virus glycoprotein D (PRV gD) has also been added to these strains as part of this project. This study evaluates the use of these strains as oral …

Real time B-mode ultrasound for ovarian examination in pigs has been used in many experimental studies. All were aimed at elucidating the relationship between the duration of oestrus, the time of ovulation, the time of insemination and fertility. This review describes the uses and benefits of real time B-mode ultrasound for ovulation monitoring and pregnancy diagnosis for fertility control in swine breeding herds. The objective of this review is to update information concerning the function of seminal plasma on the pig reproductive system, as well as its importance in artificial insemination (AI). It has been shown that seminal plasma advances ovulation in gilts by an average time of 10-14 hours, improves sperm motility, sustaines sperm viability during uterine transport, suppresses immune activities (chemotaxis of neutrophils), improved sperm transport, improves fertilisation rate, improves litter size in gilts and indirectly enhances fertility. The hormone estrogen, within the seminal plasma, causes a release of prostaglandins from the pigs endometrium to the utero-ovarian veins and lymphatic vessels. …

An outbreak of leptospirosis in a 2600 sow breeding herd, in which 5% of the sows aborted, was investigated. Serum samples from 11 aborted sows were examined for leptospira antibodies. Using a Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), containing only 12 serovars, no leptospira serovars were detected. However, after using a Microcapsule Agglutination Test (MCAT) kit, a further MAT using the additional three serovars (sejroe, hardjo and bratislava) revealed that the cause of abortion was Leptospira interrogan serovars bratislava and sejroe. Gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated intralaryngeally with swine Chlamydia trachomatis strain R33 or orally with swine C. trachmatis strain R27. Archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from piglets euthanatized 4–7 days postinoculation were examined by in situ hybridization for C. trachomatis nucleic acid using a nonradioactive digoxigenin-labeled DNA probes that targeted specific ribosomal RNA or omp1 mRNA molecules of the swine C. trachomatis strains. Positive hybridization signals were detected in bronchial epithelial cells, bronchiolar epithelial cells, pneumocytes, alveolar and interstitial macrophages, and jejunal and ileal enterocytes. This study was designed to investigate the carrier state of swine infected with Salmonella choleraesuis. Thirty-five pigs were divided into 3 groups. Groups 1 (n = 15) and 2 (n = 16) were challenged with 108 CFU of S. choleraesuis intranasally or by gastric route, respectively. Group 3 (n = 4) served as uninoculated controls. Pigs were necropsied at 2, 4, 6, and 12 weeks post inoculation. Clinical signs and microscopic lesions were more severe for group 1. Seven-day-old gnotobiotic pigs were inoculated intranasally with Pasteurella multocida and euthanatized 2, 5, 9, and 14 days after inoculation. Tissues from the oropharynx and respiratory tract of pigs were cultured quantitatively and analyzed microscopically. Pigs remained afebrile and alert, except one that died of acute fibrinopurulent pneumonia. Pasteurella multocida was isolated in greatest numbers from the pharyngeal tonsils, but only in low numbers from turbinate, trachea, lung, spleen, and liver. Significant histologic changes were limited to the tonsil. Infected pigs developed mild tonsillitis with lymphocytic hyperplasia, and accumulation of cell debris and bacteria in crypts. Thirty-two castrated male crossbred growing pigs (average initial wt 26.9 kg) were used to determine the effect of a high level of dietary protein (37%) compared with a normal level of protein (15%) on enterobacteria and Campylobactersp. inhabitation in the large intestine and on visceral organ hypertrophy and the interrelationships between these two factors. Salmonellosis suis or pig typhus, also designated as pig typhoid, infectious necrotic enteritis, or "necro," is an infectious disease among young pigs. It constitutes a major factor in the mortality of juvenile swine, and as such must be regarded as a more or less perennial hazard in swine production. Infectious necrotic enteritis caused by Salmonella suipestifer is the subject of the present publication.

The tuberculosis of swine constitutes a definite and very interesting section of the general problem of the tuberculoses of warm-blooded animals. No one section of this general tuberculosis problem can be adequately solved without regard to all the other sections into which it may be divided. The disease in swine is perhaps the most outstanding example which illustrates this point. This animal, extremely susceptible to tuberculous disease, but without a type of infection specifically its own, derives its infection by contact with any of the types of tuberculosis of warm-blooded animals.
