(2015) Ethical Gatekeeping For Lpc Supervisors, Christian J. Dean Aug 2023

(2015) Ethical Gatekeeping For Lpc Supervisors, Christian J. Dean

Louisiana Journal of Counseling

Counseling supervisors have an ethical responsibility to be gatekeepers to the profession and to protect the public from harm. When a Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor (LPC-S) in Louisiana is not also the Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor’s (PLPC) on-site supervisor, insight regarding the PLPC’s behaviors may be lacking and therefore decreases the ability of the LPC-S to identify potential remediation areas. The author presents a method to help supervision only LPC-Ss ensure their gatekeeping responsibilities through consented communications with on-site administrative supervisors.

Reflective supervision is a protected time and space for a counselor to consider his or her work from multiple perspectives with a trusted mental health professional (Shahmoon-Shanok, 2009). The authors present reflective supervision as an important component of on-going counselor practice that is separate from clinical supervision provided during counselor training. Theories of clinical and reflective supervision are discussed as they relate to the development of reflective practice for counselors. Reflective supervision is differentiated from clinical and administrative supervision as well as from periodic case consultation. The authors discuss how reflective supervision for counselors is a foundational component of their …

(2016) Ethical Decision-Making In Relation To Confidentiality Of Client-Assisted Suicide, Ashley Lopez, Kellie Giorgio Camelford

Louisiana Journal of Counseling

Counselors encounter ethical dilemmas throughout the course of their careers. As new issues arise that change legislation, the counseling profession must translate these ethical concerns into new practices. The authors in this paper apply the ethical decision-making model created by Corey, Corey, and Callanan (2010) to an ethical dilemma with regards to confidentiality of a client-assisted suicide. A growing number of states are considering reform legislation to allow end-of-life assistance (Downie, 2016). In this scenario, a client seeking grief counseling discloses to his counselor his intent to assist his terminally ill wife in her suicide request. Utilizing Corey, Corey, and …

(2016) Pharmacology Training Of Counselors, Jessica Fanguy Cortez, Chris Rachal Aug 2023

(2016) Pharmacology Training Of Counselors, Jessica Fanguy Cortez, Chris Rachal

Louisiana Journal of Counseling

As the use of psychotropic medications to treat mental illness increases across the lifespan, the need for psychopharmacology training for counselors intensifies. Research by Sepulveda (2011) concluded that counselor educators are not overwhelmingly supportive of including a psychopharmacology course in CACREP–approved school counselor curricula. Expanding on Sepulveda’s (2011) work, our findings indicate that most CACREP-approved counseling programs do not offer psychological or psychopharmacology courses. Most program directors favor such courses in their programs, and agree that licensed counselors are routinely confronted with medication issues in professional settings. But despite the fact that most programs lack training in psychopharmacology, directors believe …

The value of the wellness behavior for the helping professional is well documented by several entities including the American Counseling Association, which has embraced wellness from a comprehensive, holistic perspective (Myers, 2014). The aim of this study was to examine a group of school counselors to obtain data regarding compassion satisfaction, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Counselor education programs offer numerous opportunities for students to receive the necessary knowledge, skills, and experiences to become professional counselors. However, due to limited time, there are areas in the program that are not covered in-depth for various reasons. One such area where students may lack educational or clinical training is in the preparation of working with minors, and more specifically, the treatment of minors surrounding parental consultation practice patterns. The purpose of this article is to define parent consultation, review ethical and legal considerations when working with minors, and to provide counselor educators considerations to utilize when preparing counselors-in-training …

(2018) Shaping Trauma-Responsive Schools With Relational-Cultural Theory, Sarah C. Demarais

Louisiana Journal of Counseling

Traumatized students often struggle to meet the academic and behavioral expectations of schools. Interpersonal trauma in particular can damage children’s capacities for healthy social relationships and participation in community. In this article, I explore some of the detrimental effects of interpersonal trauma on students. I then offer relational-cultural theory as a lens for conceptualizing how interpersonal trauma affects children’s relational skills and for promoting mutually empathetic relationships that foster healing. Finally, I recommend strategies for school counselors to cultivate trauma-responsive school environments by working directly with traumatized students, advocating for safe and inclusive school cultures, and training educators in skills …

As the profession of counseling continues to develop in a technological world, the need for quality supervision and training is crucial (Aasheim, 2012). The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Other Educational Programs (CACREP) (2016) recognizes the benefits of technology, and requires graduate programs to demonstrate evidence of the integration of technology throughout the curriculum. The authors aimed to explore if counselor educators could utilize advanced technology tools to enhance teaching and learning in counselor education and supervision. The findings from this exploratory study and grant experience suggest that the incorporation of a play analyzer software can greatly enhance the …

(2018) Practicing What We Preach: Faculty Level Factors Impact On Service Learning, John A. Dewell, Yu-Yun Liu

Louisiana Journal of Counseling

Service learning has theoretical and empirical support as a pedagogy that can address the need to infuse social justice advocacy into the counselor education curriculum. Unfortunately, it is not widely utilized and there is a dearth of data shedding light on why this is. This study sought to address this by investigating how faculty level factors impact the use of service learning. The data indicates that faculty perception of the importance of professional roles, perceived teaching efficacy, and epistemic beliefs significantly predict the use of service learning. The data further indicates that faculty level factors predict attitudes towards service learning. …

The purpose of this study was to explore hegemonic masculinity, an expression of the male identity whereby value is placed on attitudes and behaviors which may be destructive, and Multicultural Competence (MCC) in male counselors. Data were collected using the Multicultural Counseling Knowledge and Awareness Scale (MCKAS; Ponterotto, et al., 2002) and the Male Norm Roles Inventory (MRNI-SF; Levant, Hall, & Rankin, 2013). Hierarchical Linear Regression (HLR) and correlational analyses were used. Louisiana Journal of Counseling

The suicide rate among Asian American adolescents has sharply increased in recent years. This article examines the factors which influence suicidal ideation, predictors of suicide, and treatment approaches for Asian American adolescents. It is imperative that mental health professionals understand the risk factors which may predict suicidal ideation. Predictors of suicide for Asian American adolescents include mental health issues, family dynamics, and academic and societal expectations and perceived pressures. Asian American adolescents report higher levels of depression and anxiety than their European American counterparts. The risk of suicide is likely to decrease when Asian American adolescents have supportive families. In …
