Care and attention to detail will greatly increase the chances of establishing good subterranean clover pastures in the wheatbelt.

PASTURE ESTABLISHMENT usually takes second place to cropping in the wheatbelt, with many farmers "bunging in a bit of clover" and hoping for the best. The worst often transpires, with either patchy stands or complete failure resulting.

Using "cheap" methods of establishment is a short-sighted approach and a waste of energy and resources.

THE identification of varieties of plants depends on the existence of a number of visual characters which have recognisably different forms in different varieties, but are relatively unaffected by environmental conditions.

For many species the characters of the whole plant may be required to arrive at a satisfactory identification and seed must be grown and the resulting plants compared with known varieties.

THE wheat varieties Claymore, Gabo and Wagin have been withdrawn from the list of wheat varieties recommended by the State Wheat Advisory Committee for sowing this season, mainly because of their lower yield performances.

Harbinger is an early-maturing medic that has met with success on some soil types, especially in the northern wheatbelt.

Similar to Cyprus barrel medic but best suited to different soil types, harbinger adds to the range of pasture legumes available for sowing in under 16 in. annual rainfall areas.

M l 2 8 , an early midseason fixed crossbred bred at the Merredin Research Station, Avon and P8304, a late midseason fixed crossbred from N.S.W, were the highest yielding oats in last year's trials.

Irwin was the highest yielding oat of early maturity.

THE Mediterranean type of climate and low elevation of land in the South-West of Western Australia permits a year-round cycle of potato planting.

One hundred and twenty large scale trials will be planted at 38 centres in the Department of Agriculture's expanding cereal variety testing programme.

ACCORDING to statistical returns West Australian farmers grow well over 100 varieties of cereals. More than 80 of these are different varieties of wheat.

Only a few varieties are widely grown so one might ask why farmers continue to grow so many of the less popular types.

The obvious answer is that they believe such varieties to be both suitable and profitable for their particular conditions.

Description, use, and varietal differences of rose clover in Western Australia.

ROSE CLOVER is a native of Asia Minor and the Mediterranean region.

Until recently, it was used only as a sown pasture in California.

Its commercial use dates back to 1949, after five years of range plot trials (Love and Sumner), but even though the species has been in commercial use for 16 years, no attempt seems to have been made to develop uniform lines from the very mixed seed in common use.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA deservedly enjoys the reputation of being a producer of oats of high milling quality.

Because of this, we have been able to develop valuable export markets which pay a premium for our oats.

For some time Ballidu has been rated as the best milling oat in W.A.

The work reported in this article indicates that other recommended varieties are equal to or better than Ballidu for milling.

STEM RUST is one of the most serious diseases of wheat and is of world-wide importance.

Fortunately, widespread epidemics are rare in Western Australia because the general climatic conditions are usually unfavourable to the disease.

Nevertheless, localised outbreaks of stem rust are quite common on the Esperance Plains and around Geraldton where seasonal conditions are frequently mild and humid.
