Fire Management Of Spinifex Pastures In The Coastal And West Pilbara, John Stretch Oct 1996

Fire Management Of Spinifex Pastures In The Coastal And West Pilbara, John Stretch

Agriculture reports

Spinifex dominated plant communities are a major natural pasture resource in the Pilbara. Spinifex is noted for its ridged, hard and generally sharp pointed leaf blades, although individual species vary in this respect. Triodia pungens and T. schinzii are often referred to as soft spinifex. Soft spinifex is useful as stock feed in its own right, whereas 'hard' spinifex species are rarely grazed by stock. Soft spinifex dominated pastures are relatively uncommon in eastern parts but important on the western coastal plains of the Pilbara (Figure 1). Information on spinifex management options available to the pastoralist or station manager is …

Jerramungup "Moort Type" Soils - Soil Description, Analyses And Discussion, Tim Overheu Mr

All other publications

Hard Setting Grey Clays, colloquially termed Moort Clays by the Central South Coast farmers of Western Australia, fall into the typical class of Sunday soils (i.e. too dry to sow a crop on Saturday and too wet on Monday) - acknowledgment that these soils can be difficult to manage. The local soil name derives from the dominant endemic vegetation growing on this soil (Eucalyptus platypus ssp) usually with no competing understory vegetation. Moort clays are most often found on mid to upper valley slopes and depending on parent material and pedogenesis are often alkaline (sometimes acidic), hard setting, sometimes cracking, …

Visions For Agriculture, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Oct 1992

Visions For Agriculture, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Agriculture reports

This workshop grew out of a conversation between Maurice Barnes, a Trayning farmer and member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Dryland Research Institute, and Steve Porritt, the officer in charge of the Dryland Research Institute at Merredin. Maurice was interested in the idea of posing the question 'What would agriculture be like if we had known as much about this landscape in 1829 as we know now?', to a group of farmers and others interested in the central wheatbelt and its future. Maurice saw this question as a first step toward achieving some shared vision for the future …

Pasture Condition Guides For The Murchison River Catchment, A Fox, T R. Eckersley Jan 1991

Pasture Condition Guides For The Murchison River Catchment, A Fox, T R. Eckersley

Soil conservation survey collection

Knowledge of the pasture resource and its capabilities is essential to sustainable use of the rangelands. Rangeland managers must be able to recognise firstly the different pasture types, and secondly, the differences between present condition classes for each type. Both factors affect the stock carrying capacity, and appropriate pastoral management of a pasture. This guide has been produced for use by pastoralists to assist them to recognise and assess the condition of the perennial pasture resource of their own properties. The guide describes the condition states found in 10 of the most widespread pastures of the Murchison River catchment (Fig. …

Post-Harvest Research On Ornamental Plant Material, Daryl C. Joyce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The rapid growth of commercial enterprises servicing overseas demand for native cut flowers and foliage from Western Australia has created a need for research and extension to support the industry. Post-harvest handling is a particularly important area because cut flowers and foliage are highly perishable and Western Australia is a long way from major markets. Markets such as The Netherlands, Japan and California demand high quality products

Pests Of Native Flowers, W M. Woods Jan 1988

Pests Of Native Flowers, W M. Woods

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

For millions of years native insects have used Australia's native plants for food and shelter. Today, we wish to cultivate these plants to produce beautiful flowers and foliage for export. However, the insects that live on the plants in the wild will attack those plants grown in cultivation, and these insects themselves will be attacked by their own predators and parasites. The challenge in floricultural entomology is to use this natural biological control as part of a cheap and effective pest management system.

Naturalised Subterranean Clover Strains Of Western Australia, W J. Collins, John S. Gladstones

Technical Bulletins

A description is given of the characteristics and distributions of 115 distinct naturalized strains of subterranean clover. Approximately three-quarters of the strains appeared from their distributions to have been introduced and to have spread in their present forms, while the remainder, which are individually of very limited distribution, appeared to have evolved locally from naturalized and commercial material by natural crossing of mutation. An attempt was made to relate the apparent ecological succes rial, and a high level of hard-seedeness.
