Methane Production By A Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water, Sean Richard Thomson
Methane Production By A Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water, Sean Richard Thomson
Master's Theses
Packed-bed digesters are an alternative to covered lagoon digesters for methane production and anaerobic treatment of dilute wastewaters such as dairy barn flush water. The physical media of packed-beds retain biofilms, often allowing increased treatment rates. Previous studies have evaluated several types of media for digestion of dilute wastewaters, but cost and media fouling have setback commercial development. A major operational cost has been effluent recirculation pumping.
In the present effort, a novel approach to anaerobic digestion of flush dairy water was developed at pilot-scale: broken walnut shells were used as a low-cost packed-bed medium and effluent recirculation was replaced …
Investigating The Interactions Between Cyanobacteria And Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Caroline E. Ward
Investigating The Interactions Between Cyanobacteria And Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Caroline E. Ward
Honors Theses and Capstones
One well-known pathogen that has been the topic of many recent studies is Vibrio parahaemolyticus, which causes thousands of foodborne illnesses a year, mostly from the ingestion of raw or undercooked oysters. It has been shown cyanobacteria can act as a long-term reservoir of Vibrio cholerae, another pathogenic Vibrio, by encasing the cells within mucilaginous sheaths during which Vibrios enter a viable but non-culturable state. In this study we investigated the interaction of V. parahaemolyticus with cyanobacteria to determine whether cyanobacteria aid in the longevity and survival of V. parahaemolyticus. We found that non-pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus …
Changes To The Equine Hindgut Microflora In Response To Antibiotic Challenge, Brittany E. Harlow
Changes To The Equine Hindgut Microflora In Response To Antibiotic Challenge, Brittany E. Harlow
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Antibiotics are important to equine medicine, but can cause detrimental side-effects including reduced feed intake, allergic reactions, and diarrhea. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is attributed to disruption of the hindgut microflora, permitting proliferation of pathogenic microbes. The objectives were to evaluate the effects of antibiotics on beneficial fecal bacteria, AAD-associated pathogens, microbial species richness and fermentation. Horses were assigned to treatment groups: control (no antibiotics, n=6), trimethoprim-sulfadiazine (oral, n=6), or sodium ceftiofur (IM, n=6). Fecal samples were taken during adaptation (3 wk), antibiotic challenge (1 wk), and withdrawal (1 wk). Fecal cellulolytics decreased by >99% during challenge and did not recover …
An Evaluation Of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Survival On Five Environmental Surfaces Under Two Different Humidities, With And Without The Addition Of Bovine Serum Albumin, Courtney Ann Coughenour
An Evaluation Of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Survival On Five Environmental Surfaces Under Two Different Humidities, With And Without The Addition Of Bovine Serum Albumin, Courtney Ann Coughenour
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria is a major public health concern, as they result in greater healthcare costs and increased morbidity and mortality rates. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one organism of particular concern, with the number of infections increasing in epidemic proportion. Bacterial surface contamination with MRSA is significant, as it may serve as a reservoir for transmission and have negative health implications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate survival of MRSA on five environmental surface materials; glass, wood, vinyl, plastic, and cloth. The effect of relative humidity (RH) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were …
Euryhelmis Cotti N. Sp. (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) With Observations On Its Life Cycle, Michael Joseph Simon
Euryhelmis Cotti N. Sp. (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) With Observations On Its Life Cycle, Michael Joseph Simon
Dissertations and Theses
Fish of the genus Cottus were found infected with heterophyid metacercariae. Laboratory animals were infected with the metacercariae, and adult heterophid trematodes were recovered. These flukes were found to represent an undescribed species of the genus Euryhelmis. Various streams in the Willamette Valley and coastal areas were sampled for infected Cottus sp. Snails of the genera Oxytrema and Fluminicola were collected. Several possible definitive hosts were examined. A partial review of the subfamily Apophallinae and a complete review of the genus Euryhelmis are presented. Euryhelmis cotti n. sp. is placed in the subfamily Apophallinae, and its life cycle …
Life History Of Philophthalmus Megalurus (Cort, 1914) In Western Oregon, Toni Anne Mcmillan
Life History Of Philophthalmus Megalurus (Cort, 1914) In Western Oregon, Toni Anne Mcmillan
Dissertations and Theses
The specific identification of a megalurous cercaria found in the snail Oxytrema plicifera was accomplished by completing the life cycle in the laboratory. This species is compared with the eastern Philophthalmus megalurus and P. gralli with which it was once confused. The eggs, miracidia, and rediae of the Oregon species were found to be similar to those of the above species. The body and organ sizes and sucker ratios for the cercariae and adult stages obviously indicate that the Oregon species is Philophthalmus megalurus.
