Deinking And Bleaching Of Waste Paper In One Stage, Suleiman Yusuf Dadabhoy Apr 1969

Deinking And Bleaching Of Waste Paper In One Stage, Suleiman Yusuf Dadabhoy

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The scope of this project was to explore the possibility of deinking and bleaching of wastepaper in one stage.

All the experiments were run under the same conditions and using the same equipment.

From the results obtained, it is concluded that it is possible to deink and bleach in one stage. It was found that deinking and bleaching of groundwood paper at the same time, shows more improvement than paper with less groundwood in it.

When paper is deinked and bleached at the same time, the consumption of chemicals is little more, but on the other hand, one could make …

The Effect Of Infra-Red Radiation On The Curing Rate Of An Alkylketene Dimer Sizing Agent, Roland A. Johnson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The contents of this thesis examine the principles behind and the effects of the application of infra-red radiation on a sheet sized with an alkylketene dimer. Handsheets were formed by the Noble and Wood procedure from bleached softwood kraft pulp beaten to a Canadian standard freeness of 390. They were sized with the dimer to a 0.2% concentration on the weight of the oven dry fiber combined with a cationic retention agent to a 0.05% concentration. It was found that infra-red radiation improved the sizing effects of the dimer.

Characterization Of Fiber Fines By Drainage Resistance Analysis, Edward J. Grys Apr 1969

Characterization Of Fiber Fines By Drainage Resistance Analysis, Edward J. Grys

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This thesis begins by developing a literature background for a variety of pulp characterization methods and relating them to present-day techniques.

Two methods are evaluated and compared with the Canadian Standard Freeness (C.S.F.) test. They are the Centrifugal Water Retention (C.W.R.) method and the constant rate filtration resistance method using the Pulmac Permeability instrument. A standard pulp was used and the fines content was varied from 0% to 25% at 5% intervals. Handsheets were made and the pulp characterization values were related to sheet strength values.

In general, the data indicated that the specific surface area, from the constant filtration …

The Schulze-Hardy Law And The Hofmeister Series Of Ions In Coagulations Of Starch-Titanium Dioxide White Water, Thomas R. O'Hara Apr 1969

The Schulze-Hardy Law And The Hofmeister Series Of Ions In Coagulations Of Starch-Titanium Dioxide White Water, Thomas R. O'Hara

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

In recent years the problem of pollution has gained more importance in the pulp and paper industries due to the pressures applied by the State and Federal Governments. One of the areas in which the industry has been weak is the coagulation of starch-titanium white water. The problem is largely due to the stabilizing power of the modified starches used in the industry today. These starches peptize the pigment which is present in the white water and form a highly stable colloidal system.

The coagulating rules set down in the Schulze-Hardy Law and the Hofmeister Series state that the higher …

The Effects Of Stress During Drying Upon Physical Characteristics, Keith R. Stanley Apr 1969

The Effects Of Stress During Drying Upon Physical Characteristics, Keith R. Stanley

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of stress during drying upon the strength of the paper.

This study consisted of two machine runs on a pilot paper machine. The machine was operated with minimum tension in all draws to provide a standard condition. For experimental conditions, tension was applied at various draws and increased until the sheet broke. Samples were taken from the standard condition sets and from-all experimental sets for evaluation purposes. The samples were evaluated for machine and cross-machine direction elongation, machine and cross-machine direction tensile, mullen, and machine and cross-machine direction tensile energy …

The Effect Of Machine Draw Tensions On Sheet Properties, James C. Wyrick Apr 1969

The Effect Of Machine Draw Tensions On Sheet Properties, James C. Wyrick

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A machine run was made on 75% softwood, 25% hardwood bleached kraft. All variables were kept constant except for the draw between dryer sections. This was varied between -0.2 fpm and 2.0 fpm at approximately 90 fpm wire. speed. Samples were taken at eighteen points between -0.2 fpm and 2.0 fpm and tested for moisture content, basis weight, tensile, elongation and tensile energy absorption. Moisture content was found to vary from 59.5% to 63.2% dryness while the basis weight varied from 39.2 to 41.1 lb. (25x38-500) ream. The basis weight showed no effect on percent dryness. Both the percent elongation …

The Use Of The Streaming Current Detector For Determining Dye Adsorption Characteristics Of Papermaking Fibers, Thomas Meersman Apr 1969

The Use Of The Streaming Current Detector For Determining Dye Adsorption Characteristics Of Papermaking Fibers, Thomas Meersman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to study the dye adsorption characteristics of cellulose by means of the Streaming Current Detector. The influence of electrolytes on dye adsorption, and the electrokinetic phenomena of two-sided dyeing were areas of particular concentration.

Contrary to general belief, it was found the addition of sodium chloride was not necessarily beneficial to dye adsorption and in some cases it could actually be detrimental. The Streaming Current Detector was found to be a useful tool for predicting this effect.

The higher charge of fines was found to be an important factor in the increased dye adsorption …

The Effects Of Ph On Alkaline Sizing Of Bleached Hardwood Pulps With Aquapel, David K. Dekam Apr 1969

The Effects Of Ph On Alkaline Sizing Of Bleached Hardwood Pulps With Aquapel, David K. Dekam

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The effects of pH on alkaline sizing of two bleached hardwood pulps, kraft and sulfite, was investigated. The pulps were refined in a Noble and Wood cycle beater and handsheets were made with a Noble and Wood handsheet making system. The handsheets were internally sized with 0.15 percent Aquapel using 0.05 percent Kymene 557 as a retention aid. Upon varying the pH of sizing of bleached hardwood sulfite pulp the Hercules Ink Photometer measurements of 258, 636, and 563 seconds were observed at pH's of 7.0, 8.5, and 9.5 respectively. The sizing increased with pH up to a certain pH …

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris Jan 1969

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

A number of chemicals of diverse characteristics have arbitrarily been classed together on the basis of their use and given the descriptive name "pesticides. " An unfortunate aura of mystery has developed about these chemicals. However, there is nothing unique or mysterious about the chemicals we refer to as "pesticides." Like other chemicals, they have properties which can be accurately measured; they obey all the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology.

The Effects Of Cationically Charged Titanium Dioxide On Particle Dispersion In The Sheet Of Paper, Neil A. Hartman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Comercial bleached soft wood sulfite pulp was used. The pulp was refined in a Standard Valley Beater to a Canadian Standard freeness of 428. This pulp was preserved and used to make all of the handsheets, on a Noble and Wood handsheet mold.

The Titanium dioxide added to the handsheets was prepared in three different ways: simple dispersion, dispersion of the Titanium dioxide along with cationic substances, and addition of the dispersed Titanium dioxide and the cationic substance to the pulp without previous co-dispersion. The optical properties of the sheets were measured and the Titanium dioxide in the sheets was …

The Influence Of Information Signs On Visitor Distribution And Use, Perry J. Brown, John D. Hunt Jan 1969

The Influence Of Information Signs On Visitor Distribution And Use, Perry J. Brown, John D. Hunt

Forest Management Faculty Publications

Lack of information is a primary factor accounting for visitors jamming recreation sites, overflowing onto highway rights-of-way and blocking facilities [5, p. 95]. In attempting to attain an even distribution of visitors, the importance of information signing as a management tool is often overlooked. Oxenfeldt indicates that advertising (information) alters behavior most efficiently when it supplies information customers are seeking [4, p. 471]. Tocher and Kearns noted in visitor characteristic studies that travelers seek different experiences when touring than when at home or work [6]. Information signs may lead the visitor to these different experiences. Hypothesizing that signs can influence …

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Sugar Content Of Enzyme Converted Starch And Pick Values Of A Coated Sheet, David A. Mrochek Dec 1968

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Sugar Content Of Enzyme Converted Starch And Pick Values Of A Coated Sheet, David A. Mrochek

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this experiment was to convert starch by the use of enzyme. The conversion was carried out in a way to produce variations in the reducing sugar contents of the cooked starch. These starches were then applied as the adhesive in a coating mixture. Draw downs were made using the variety of coatings and then the sheets were tested for surface strength. The IGT Pick Tested was used. It was hoped that a definite relationship between sugar contents and pick values could be obtained. This, however, was not the case and the experiment would have to be considered …

Bird Hybrids In The Kettle Moraine, Millicent S. Ficken Oct 1968

Bird Hybrids In The Kettle Moraine, Millicent S. Ficken

Field Station Bulletins

Since hybridization in birds is so rare in nature, it is unusual to have the opportunity to study what happens when two species interbreed. Blue-winged Warblers (Vermivora pinus) and Golden-winged Warblers (V. chrysoptera) produce hybrids wherever they occur together. Furthermore, such hybrids are fertile and there is pairing between these hybrids and both parental species. When we learned that both species breed in the northern Kettle Moraine State Forest, we decided to see what sorts of interactions between the two species were occurring there. Our objective initially was to determine if pairing was random between the species, e.g. were Blue-wings …
