Optimizing Biocides To Control Microorganisms, Josh Taube Dec 1997

Optimizing Biocides To Control Microorganisms, Josh Taube

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Microorganisms can cause many problems during the papermaking process. These problems include slime deposits, corrosion, felt plugging, holes, and additive contamination. An effective biocide program can reduce the numbers of microorganisms resulting in a reduction of these associated problems. This study focuses on the control of microorganisms on the paper machine and the relevant sources of water. Observation of the paper machine began with bleach being pumped into the headboxes, AES screen rotating shower water system and Bel-Bond showers. There was approximately 250 ml/min of bleach being pumped into each of these systems. The amount of bleach being pumped into …

Silica Gel: An Experiment In Surface Area, Scott Vermullen Dec 1997

Silica Gel: An Experiment In Surface Area, Scott Vermullen

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Within the paper industry today, there are advancements in technology every year, every month, most likely every day as well. These new technologies work to obtain the same major goals. These goals include faster machine speeds for improved output. They-include less, pollution, and in fact are working towards a pollutant free system. And finally, product quality for today's high demanding consumer market.

To realize these goals, paper makers must effectively utilize the most amount of fiber and filler possible in their sheet. That is, they must bind up fines and filler within the sheet rather than sending it to the …

Md Ribbing Instability Of Air Knife Coating Application, Bradley W. Fadden Dec 1997

Md Ribbing Instability Of Air Knife Coating Application, Bradley W. Fadden

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The coating application process is an area of great concern for most mills that produce a coated media. During the roll application of the coating onto the sheet, the fluid that is passed to the sheet from the roll, goes through a process known as film splitting. Film splitting is the mechanism for the transfer of the fluid from the application roll to the sheet. Instead of smoothly transferring onto the sheet, the film splits away from the roll and then onto the substrate. Without even transfer and leveling of the coating fluid, the splitting results in stripes or ribs …

The Effect Of Antioxidant Addition On Lightfastness Of Color Ink Jet Printing, Jennifer M. Siuda Dec 1997

The Effect Of Antioxidant Addition On Lightfastness Of Color Ink Jet Printing, Jennifer M. Siuda

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Fluorescent office lighting has been shown to fade ink jet colors. Fading of ink jet dyes is a problem when the shelf life of documents is important. For effective, low cost ink jet printing, the color quality of the printed paper must be maintained for a duration of time. Research in hot melt adhesives has shown a reduction of color loss associated with the use of antioxidants.

During this thesis, a coating formulation was tested with and without an antioxidant present. The antioxidants tested were alpha tocopherol I vitamin E, and sodium thiosulfate. The addition rate was varied at 2.65 …

Effect Of Borax On Drying And Strength Properties Of Paper, Melanie J. Robydek Dec 1997

Effect Of Borax On Drying And Strength Properties Of Paper, Melanie J. Robydek

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Sodium tetraborate, the most common of the borate minerals, is a salt believed to promote crosslinking among cellulose and hemicellulose fibers. Samples of bleached Burgess hardwood pulp (45% maple, 25% birch, 15% beech, 15% poplar) obtained from Crown Vantage were treated with borax at three different levels: 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0%. The pulp was pre-soaked with borax at 10% consistency, for one hour, prior to refining in a PFI mill. The drying and strength properties of the paper produced from the control and treated pulps were tested according to standard TAPPI procedures and analyzed statistically. The addition of borax resulted …

Cationic Polymeric Microparticle Retention Systems And Fines Retention, Derek Maddox Dec 1997

Cationic Polymeric Microparticle Retention Systems And Fines Retention, Derek Maddox

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A new cationic polymeric microparticle (CPMP), which is not yet commercialized, has been developed as a retention and flocculation aid. To study the effectiveness of this new cationic polymeric microparticle as a retention aid it was used in conjunction with both a cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and an anionic polyacrylamide (APAM). Laboratory evaluation involved using a Britt Dynamic Drainage Jar, two different furnishes and multiple retention system addition levels to test for fines retention. The two systems were then evaluated individually and compared.

It was found that both the CPMP-APAM and CPMP-CPAM systems were beneficial in retaining both fiber and filler …

The Effect Of Drying And Rewetting On Single Fiber Flexibility For Chemical And Mechanical Pulps, Mark E. Dulemba Dec 1997

The Effect Of Drying And Rewetting On Single Fiber Flexibility For Chemical And Mechanical Pulps, Mark E. Dulemba

Masters Theses

Over the years, various attempts have been made to develop methods to measure fiber flexibility. In the course of developing test methods for fiber flexibility, various studies have been performed that measure the flexibilities of different wood pulps.

In this study, never-dried individual thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and bleached kraft fibers were mounted on the tip of a glass tube submerged in water and deflected by water flow. The deflection of the individual fibers was measured using a microscope and image analysis software. The fibers were then dried, rewetted, and the deflection was measured_again. This drying and rewetting cycle was repeated …

The Repulping Of Wet-Strength Paperboard, Angelo N. Melchiorre Dec 1997

The Repulping Of Wet-Strength Paperboard, Angelo N. Melchiorre

Masters Theses

Beverage carrier paperboard containing the polyamide wet-strength resin is one type of fiber that is presently landfilled. In this study, it was repulped at a 15% consistency and a pH of 10 at 150° F. in a z-bar mixer. Hydrogen peroxide (HP), ammonium perswulfate (AP), sodium persulfate (SP) and dimethyldioxirane (DMD) were used during repulping. The HP was added at 1.0%, 2.5% and 5.0%, based on O.D. weight of the fiber. The remaining chemicals were added at the same oxidation equivalent. During repulping, the pulp was screened using a Britt Jar to determine percent yield over time. Samples were taken …

Effect Of Artificial Flooding On The Vegetation And Avifauna Of Riparian Woodlands At Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Hidalgo County, Texas, Charles David Castillo Dec 1997

Effect Of Artificial Flooding On The Vegetation And Avifauna Of Riparian Woodlands At Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Hidalgo County, Texas, Charles David Castillo

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Riparian habitats along the Rio Grande at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge have dramatically decreased since the construction of Falcon Dam in 1953. Riparian habitats are dependent on annual or periodic flooding to maintain their biological integrity. Lack of seasonal flooding has contributed to changes in vegetative composition from riparian forests to thornscrub. Effects of artificial flooding on vegetation and avifauna of riparian woodlands were evaluated from 1995-1997 at the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. Floodwaters caused the destruction of all existing herbaceous species along study transects and the regeneration of new and native seedlings. Avian abundance and diversity dramatically …

Caloric Production Of Black Bear Foods In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Robert Michael Inman Dec 1997

Caloric Production Of Black Bear Foods In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Robert Michael Inman

Masters Theses

Understanding energetic potential of habitat patches is important for management designed to provide adequate habitat for wildlife species. Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) has a high density of black bears that have been studied intensively from 1968-1997; habitats within the Park are relatively undisturbed, and similar vegetative cover types can be found throughout the southern Appalachian mountains. Black bear reproduction in the Park has been correlated to hard mast production, however little work has been done to assess the importance of soft mast. Geographic Information System (GIS) based habitat use models have been developed for bears in the Park, …

Competitive Interactions Among Symbiotic Fungi Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Kier D. Klepzig, Richard T. Wilkens Nov 1997

Competitive Interactions Among Symbiotic Fungi Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Kier D. Klepzig, Richard T. Wilkens

Dartmouth Scholarship

The southern pine beetle, a damaging pest of conifers, is intimately linked to three symbiotic fungi. Two fungi, Ceratocystiopsis ranaculosus and Entomocorticium sp. A, are transported within specialized structures (mycangia) in the beetle exoskeleton and are mutualists of the beetle. A third fungus, Ophiostoma minus, is transported externally on the beetle exoskeleton (phoretically) and is an antagonist of the beetle. This study examined competitive interactions among these three fungi. The results of de Wit replacement series and primary and secondary resource capture assays with these fungi provide strong evidence for differential competition between the phoretic and mycangial fungi. O. minus …

Forest Farming: An Agroforestry Practice, Mary Ellen Dix, Deborah B. Hill, Louise E. Buck, W. J. Rietveld Nov 1997

Forest Farming: An Agroforestry Practice, Mary Ellen Dix, Deborah B. Hill, Louise E. Buck, W. J. Rietveld

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Most public and private forest lands of North America have been modified to varying degrees from years of human activity. Certain high-value ‘non-timber forest products’ have been over-exploited and are difficult to find. Forest farming practices can be used by private enterprise to grow desirable non-timber forest products on private lands, to supplement family income, and to allow biodiversity to reestablish within forests.

The Biology Of Silvopastoralism, Steven H. Sharrow Nov 1997

The Biology Of Silvopastoralism, Steven H. Sharrow

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Forestry and livestock grazing are common competing uses for non-irrigated lands around the world. Forest grazing is a traditional practice in most of North America. Approximately 25 percent of all US forest land is grazed by livestock. Young forests and mature open-canopied forests can provide considerable amounts of forage for livestock. Prescription grazing makes beneficial use of ground vegetation that would otherwise compete with trees for soil moisture and nutrients, harbor gnawing rodents, and pose a fire hazard. Pasture grasses and legumes are sometimes seeded into newly harvested forest areas to reduce erosion, to provide high-quality food for deer and …

Biología Silvopastoril, Steven H. Sharrow Nov 1997

Biología Silvopastoril, Steven H. Sharrow

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Silvopasture: An Agroforestry Practice, Ned B. Klopfenstein, W. J. Rietveld, Richard C. Carman, Terry R. Clason, Steven H. Sharrow, Gene Garrett, Bruce Anderson

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Although some form of silvopasture management has been practiced for centuries, silvopasture as an agroforestry practice is specifically designed and managed for the production of trees, tree products, forage, and livestock. Silvopasture results when forage crops are deliberately introduced or enhanced in a timber production system, or timber crops are deliberately introduced or enhanced in a forage production system. As a silvopasture, timber and pasture are managed as a single integrated system.

Silvopastoral systems are designed to produce a high-value timber component, while providing short-term cash flow from the livestock component. The interactions among timber, forage, and livestock are managed …

Response From Cooperative Extension Personnel To Citizen Requests For Information About Wildlife, Shannon Thurston, Gary J. San Julian Oct 1997

Response From Cooperative Extension Personnel To Citizen Requests For Information About Wildlife, Shannon Thurston, Gary J. San Julian

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

With the increasing urbanization of rural areas, conflicts between homeowners and wildlife are becoming more common. County extension offices frequently receive telephone calls from individuals who are experiencing problems with wildlife. In most cases, extension staff provides assistance over the phone or by mail. However, there are no guidelines for the distribution of information nor is there training for extension personnel. Each county office collects and distributes information differently. Because there is no follow-up to inquiries, little is known about what the homeowners actually do or whether the problems were solved. With some wildlife species, there is a question of …

The Use Of Plot Surveys For The Study Of Ethnobotanical Knowledge: A Brunei Dusun Example, Jay H. Bernstein, Roy Ellen, Bantong Bin Antaran

Publications and Research

This paper describes a technique for using plot surveys to measure individual informants' ethnobotanical knowledge of forests, as applied to the Dusun community of Merimbun in Brunei. Two knowledgeable but non-literate Dusun informants enumerated marked plots of both recent and old secondary growth mixed dipterocarp forest near the village. They were able to provide names (other than life-forms or the most general basic and intermediate categories) for 86-97% of species growing in the plots. Between 152 and 170 plant names were elicited by the surveys. In all cases, about 88% of the names were at the basic naming level and …

Effect Of Wire Gauge, Web Speed, And Coating Solids On Leveling Of Streaks In Rod Coating, Mukhtar A. Khan Jun 1997

Effect Of Wire Gauge, Web Speed, And Coating Solids On Leveling Of Streaks In Rod Coating, Mukhtar A. Khan

Masters Theses

The behavior of coatings and their study is becoming more important in proportion to additional use of coated paper. Good coating is key to enhance print quality. Blade coating is quite common, but rod coating is coming back for the advantages it has over blade coating. The process of rod coating is simpler and maintenance is easier. Coatings at low solids can be applied with ease and the impurities are washed away by rod rotation. The surface profile of coating is a potential concern, due to streaks in the machine direction. If the coating is immobilized before the streaks heal, …
