An ecological process model of vegetation dynamics mechanistically simulates long-term stand dynamics on coniferous landscapes of the Northern Rocky Mountains. This model is used to investigate and evaluate cumulative effects of various fire regimes, including prescribed burning and fire exclusion, on the vegetation and fuel complex of a simulation landscape composed of many stands. Detailed documentation of the model FIRE-BGC (a FIRE BioGeoChemical succession model) with complete discussion of all model parameters is followed with results of an application of the FIRE-BGC to a whitebark pine landscape in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), a common hardwood tree throughout Canada, is being harvested at increasing rates for use in paper and building materials. Piles of aspen logs have been observed to produce a dark, watery, acutely toxic leachate. A laboratory study was undertaken to elucidate the nature, strength, and persistence of aspen leachate toxicity and the chemical composition of the leachate. Leaching from aspen chips in the laboratory was rapid, with 1% mass loss in the first 24 h. Filled thermoplastic composites are stiffer, stronger, and more dimensionally stable than their unfilled counterparts. Such thermoplastics are usually provided to the end-user as a precompounded, pelletized feedstock. Typical reinforcing fillers are inorganic materials like talc or fiberglass, but materials derived from waste wood, such as wood flour and recycled paper fiber, are also effective as fillers. The goal of this project was to generate commercial interest in using waste-wood–paper-derived fillers (WPFs) to reinforce thermoplastics. The research strategy was twofold: developmental research and outreach. Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is a volatile hydrocarbon emitted from many plant species to the atmosphere, where it plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry. An enzyme extracted from aspen (Populus tremuloides) leaves was previously found to catalyze the Mg2+-dependent elimination of pyrophosphate from dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) to form isoprene (Silver, G. M., and Fall, R.(1991) Plant Physiol. 97, 1588-1591). This enzyme, isoprene synthase, has now been purified 4000-fold to near homogeneity. The enzyme had a native molecular mass of 98-137 kDa and isoelectric point of 4.7 and contained 58- and 62-kDa subunits, implying that it is a heterodimer. …

Plant community changes and natural succession over time impact forage values, watershed quality, wildlife habitat, and ecosystem dynamics. Comparisons were made between a vegetation map of community types completed in 1937 by the U.S. Forest Service, and vegetation maps compiled in 1990 of the same areas by satellite imagery, and through 1991 areal photo interpretation combined with ground truthing. The study area includes nearly all of the drainage in Ephraim Canyon located in central Utah which consists of 6,027 acres (2,439 ha). Elevation ranges from 6,600 to 10,400 feet (2,040 to 3,210 m). This study investigated the biopulping agent Phanerochaete chrysosporium with a new process that required neither wood sterilization nor pure culture incubation conditions. Aspen (Populus tremuloides Michaux) chip bales with three treatments were studied. Each bale was kraft cooked after 8.5 weeks of pretreatment. The effects of fungal inoculation and foil-wrapping on pulp and paper strength properties were evaluated. Fungal pretreatment caused significantly faster response to beating as lower freeness was noted. Foil-wrapping retarded the loss of moisture within the bale, and as a result, prolonged fungal activities, resulting in substantial increases in burst strength. Small openings were cleared by bulldozing in montane aspen Populus tremuloides forest in southwestern Alberta in 1976. Production of browse, forbs and grasses was measured at the end of the growing season 2 and 7 years later. In the 2nd year production of woody twigs was significantly higher than on uncut controls (87.0 kg/ha compared to 56.0 kg/ha). In the 7th year twig production on cut blocks still exceeded that on the control blocks (53.9 kg/ha compared to 35.5 g/ha). Leaf production was also significantly higher on the treated blocks during both years. Forb production and species composition was not …
