Characterization Of Aspen Isoprene Synthase, An Enzyme Responsible For Leaf Isoprene Emission To The Atmosphere, Gary M. Silver, Ray Fall

Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is a volatile hydrocarbon emitted from many plant species to the atmosphere, where it plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry. An enzyme extracted from aspen (Populus tremuloides) leaves was previously found to catalyze the Mg2+-dependent elimination of pyrophosphate from dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) to form isoprene (Silver, G. M., and Fall, R.(1991) Plant Physiol. 97, 1588-1591). This enzyme, isoprene synthase, has now been purified 4000-fold to near homogeneity. The enzyme had a native molecular mass of 98-137 kDa and isoelectric point of 4.7 and contained 58- and 62-kDa subunits, implying that it is a heterodimer. …

The volume of healthy trees of commercial size in the maple-birch forest type measured during the last two Forest Inventory Analysis surveys of Wisconsin grew at 2 to 3%/yr for sawtimber, and 3 to 4% for pole timber, with substantial differences among species. However, from 1967 to 1989, the real price of logs decreased or remained constant for most grades and species. The decrease was especially large for high grade logs. The only exceptions were red oak and elm, whose prices increased at i to 2 %/yr, for all grades. As a result, the average value growth rate of the …

Predicting Quaking Aspen Stand Dynamics In Minnesota, R.A. Leary, G.J. Brand, D.A. Perala

This paper presents equations for predicting future basal area, number of trees, and total cubic-foot volume of aspen stands in Minnesota. The modeling methodology uses a fully-stocked yield table for quaking aspen as a density standard. A relative density change equation based on observed growth from permanent plots provides the basis for predicting the future relative density and therefore the future basal area, number of trees, and volume. Fungi Associated With Sprout Mortality In Aspen Clearcuts In Colorado And Arizona, W.R. Jacobi, W.D. Shepperd

Four aspen stands with greater than 90% sprout mortality in Colorado and one in Arizona were evaluated for fungal pathogens. There 4- to 5-year-old sprouts had rapidly expanding cankers moving from the terminal to the ground line. Roots of sampled sprouts showed no damage and root diseases were not found. Fruiting structures of Cytospora chrysosperma were consistently found on dying stems, while those of Dothiora polyspora were occasionally found. The same organisms were isolated from the margins of advancing cankers. Pathogenicity tests using greenhouse-grown aspen trees indicated C. chrysosperma caused rapidly expanding cankers similar to those observed on the aspen …

A recently discovered, widely distributed canker disease of aspen and other poplars throughout the Rocky Mountain region is described. Inoculations with ascospore and conidial isolates of Cryptosphaeria populina show the fungus is capable of causing branch, sprout, and sapling mortality, trunk cankers, and the discoloration and decay of aspen stems previously associated with its imperfect stage, Libertella sp. The greatest average canker elongation 50 mo after September inoculations was 33.5 cm with sapwood decay and discoloration extending to 401 cm. The fungus caused an average weight loss of 13.5% in bark, 27.0% in sapwood, and 19.1% in heartwood blocks. Incidence …
