Bacteriophages are used as indicators of pathogenic bacteria in drinking, and wastewaters. They also show potential in limiting aquatic bacterial populations through their lytic properties. The effect of different water characteristics (salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature) on the sensitivity of the PCR identification of virus particles were analyzed to determine at what levels bacteriophage can be detected in environmental samples. Results from this preliminary study indicate that a PCR bacteriophage detection technique has potential as a relatively efficient and economical indicator of coliform contamination in multiple aquatic environments. Considerable variation exists in the rate of extra-pair matings (EPMs) in birds. Environmental variability likely influences EPM rates within species, but the effects of local environmental factors on EPM rates are largely unpredictable. To determine whether broad-scale environmental factors might be better predictors of EPM rates within species, we quantified levels of extra-pair paternity in the house wren (Troglodytes aedon) in four populations spanning a range of latitude, elevation, and primary productivity (measured by actual evapotranspiration rates). Our results indicated an intermediate and variable level of EPM among populations (6 -31% extra-pair young) that was not significantly affected by 3 …

Ribonuclease inhibitor (RI) is an intracellular mammalian protein which binds vertebrate-specific ribonucleases; this interaction is one of the tightest non-covalent interactions yet discovered. The biological activity of RI is poorly understood, but it is thought to regulate the biological functions of ribonucleases, which include initiating blood vessel growth, maintaining neuron viability, attacking pathogens, and mediating cell stress responses. RI is also involved in pathways unrelated to ribonucleases, including interactions with Drosha and PTEN, an anti-tumor protein.

Bacterial bioluminescence is observed in over twenty known species, primarily in the family Vibrionaceae. However, only Vibrio fischeri and Vibrio harveyi bioluminescence expression mechanisms are well studied. In V. harveyi, expression of the lux operon is activated by the transcription factor LuxR (LuxRVH), resulting in bioluminescence. Homologs of LuxRVH in other Vibrio species have been shown to regulate transcription of a variety of genes. Three parallel quorum sensing pathways co-regulate the expression of LuxRVH. The innate immune system is highly conserved amongst all multicellular organisms. Yet a constant battle exists between host cells and pathogens due to the rapid evolution of immune system components. Functional genomics and in silico methods can be employed to elucidate the evolutionary patterns of vertebrate immunity to pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen that can cause lethal candidiasis in the immunocompromised. Mammals such as humans and mice possess conserved C-type lectin receptors that recognize the C. albicans cell wall. However, these receptors have not been identified in fish. Maari is a spontaneously alkaline fermented food condiment made from baobab tree seeds. Due to the spontaneous nature of maari fermentations growth of the opportunistic human pathogen Bacillus cereus is occasionally observed. Bacillus subtilis strains are important for alkaline seed fermentations because of their enzymatic activities contributing to desirable texture, flavor and pH development. Some B. subtilis strains have antimicrobial properties against B. cereus. In the present work, three bacteriocin producing B. subtilis strains (B3, B122 and B222) isolated from maari were tested.
