Molecular And Morphological Evolution Of The Amphipod Radiation Of Lake Baikal, Kenneth S. Macdonald Iii
Molecular And Morphological Evolution Of The Amphipod Radiation Of Lake Baikal, Kenneth S. Macdonald Iii
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The amphipods of Lake Baikal, Russia, are a taxonomically and morphologically diverse group, and have been cited as a classic example of adaptive radiation. An unfortunate consequence of this diversity has been an instability of Baikal amphipod classification, with frequent revisions spurred by differing opinions about the phylogenetic utility of different characters. Classifications have never been based on a rigorous phylogenetic analysis of morphological data and only recently has the phylogeny of Lake Baikal's amphipods been examined using molecular tools. Unfortunately, most of these studies have led to a limited expansion of our understanding of Baikal amphipod systematics. Phylogenetic relationships …

Development Of A Watershed And Stream-Reach Spawning Habitat Model For River Herring Alosa Pseudoharengus And Alosa Aestivalis, Rebecca A. Boger
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This research develops a model to identify indicators of potential suitable spawning habitat for river herring, Alosa pseudoharengus and A. aestivalis, using watershed and stream-reach metrics. The results of icthyoplankton samples collected from thirty-four streams feeding into the Rappahannock River below the Embree Dam at Fredericksburg indicate where river herring spawning occurred. Watershed and stream-reach metrics were either measured in the field or derived from digital data in a GIS. Benthic macroinvertebrate analysis was used to compare habitat quality among sites. Streams were classified as either absence or presence of herring eggs or larvae based on the results of the …

Internesting Movements Of Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) Sea Turtles In Virginia, Usa, Katherine L. Mansfield, John A. Musick, Soraya M. Bartol
Reports
Virginia is the northern most nesting region regularly utilized by loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) along the eastern coast of the United States. Along the southern shoreline of Virginia, between two and ten nests have been recorded annually since 1989 within Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. Since 1992, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has attached eight satellite transmitters to nesting loggerhead sea turtles in order to monitor their interesting movements and falVwinter migrations. VIMS has tracked the same nesting loggerhead three separate times during the 1993, 1995 and 1997 nesting seasons. This turtle …

Polychaete Key For Chesapeake Bay And Coastal Virginia, Aaron Bartholomew, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science
Reports
Polychaetes are a class of annelid worms, generally marine, with more than 10,000 species. Common representatives include the lugworm (Arenicola marina) and the sandworm or clam worm Nereis. Polychaetes are important members of benthic ecosystems, serving as food for other organisms and playing a key role in mixing sediments. This key is designed to help identify polychaete species in Chesapeake Bay and coastal Virginia.

Nursery Delineation, Habitat Utilization, Movements, And Migration Of Juvenile Carcharhinus Plumbeus In Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, United States Of America, R. Dean. Grubbs
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Chesapeake Bay is possibly the largest summer nursery for Carcharhinus plumbeus in the western Atlantic. Longline sampling conducted from 1990--1999 was used to delineate this nursery spatially and temporally. Catch data from 83 longline stations sampled throughout the Virginia Chesapeake Bay were analyzed as a function of nine physical and environmental variables to delineate this nursery spatially. Tree-based models determined which variables best discriminated between stations with high and low catches and indicated that complex distribution patterns could be adequately modeled with few variables. The highest abundance of juvenile sharks was predicted where salinity was greater than 20.5 and depth …

A Molecular Phylogeny Of The Sparidae (Perciformes: Percoidei), Thomas M. Orrell
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The Sparidae are a diverse group of over 110 marine species whose putative six subfamilies have been defined primarily on the basis of dentition and feeding type. Monophyly of the subfamilies has not been tested, nor have the phylogenetic relationships of all sparid genera been hypothesized. I used mitochondrial DNA sequences from the complete cytochrome b gene (1140 bp) and the partial 16S gene (621 bp) in independent and combined analyses to test the monophyly of the Sparidae, elucidate the inter-relationships of the 33 recognized genera of the Sparidae, test the validity of the six subfamilies of the Sparidae, and …

Demographics, Production, And Benthic -Pelagic Coupling By The Suspension Feeding Polychaete Chaetopterus Pergamentaceus In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Michelle Lynne Thompson Neubauer
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
For many shallow water environments, ecosystem function depends on the cycling and flow of materials and energy between benthic and pelagic subsystems. Benthic suspension feeders often are important links between the water column and sediment in coastal ecosystems. Populations of the suspension feeding polychaete Chaetopterus pergamentaceus (previously reported as Chaetopterus variopedatus) are widely distributed along the United States East Coast, ranging from New England to Florida. This species is a structurally and functionally important member of the lower Chesapeake Bay benthic community, where it has maintained stable populations for at least the last 15 years. Little is known regarding the …

Osteology, Phylogeny, And Biogeography Of The Marine Fish Family Ephippidae (Perciformes, Acanthuroidei), With Comments On Sister Group Relationships, Martin Ray Cavalluzzi
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The marine fish family Ephippidae comprises eight genera and 15 species of extant fishes. Spadefishes or batfishes inhabit nearshore tropical to temperate waters. They are almost circumglobal in distribution, with the highest diversity in the Indo-west Pacific and the lowest diversity in the east Pacific and west Atlantic. Fifty-nine potentially informative morphological characters, 10 outgroup taxa, and eight ingroup taxa (i.e., genera) were used to explore sister group hypotheses to the Ephippidae, as well as generate a phylogeny of the Ephippidae. Seven constraint tree analyses were utilized to examine various sister group hypotheses based on previous morphological and molecular analyses …
