Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay, January 2005-December 2005 : Annual Progress Report, Herbert M. Austin, Amanda H. Hewitt, Julia K. Elllis, Mary C. Fabrizio
Reports
The primary objective of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science juvenile striped bass survey is to monitor the relative annual recruitment success of juvenile striped bass in the major Virginia nursery areas of lower Chesapeake Bay. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initially funded the survey from 1967 to 1973. After a hiatus ending in 1980, funds were provided by the National Marine Fisheries Service under the Emergency Striped Bass Study program. Commencing with the 1988 annual survey, the work was jointly supported by Wallop-Breaux funds (Sport Fish Restoration Act) administered through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the …

Rapa River Watch : Activity Booklet For Educators, Juliana M. Harding, Vicki P. Clark
Reports
This booklet contains background information, graphs, and student worksheets for a classroom activity focusing on the veined rapa whelk, an Asian mollusc that has invaded the Chesapeake Bay.
It provides data-based exercises that integrate biological and environmental data to assess hypothetical estuarine habitats with regard to invasion potential by rapa whelks.

Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program Annual Report 2005, John A. Lucy, C.M. Bain Iii
Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program Annual Report 2005, John A. Lucy, C.M. Bain Iii
Reports
The Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program (VGFTP), initiated in 1995, coordinates tagging and a tag-recapture fish database generated through contributed efforts of a dedicated corps of trained marine anglers. Through 2005, the program’s database includes nearly 88,000 records of tag-released fish and approximately 8,300 recaptures.
Assessment Of Sturgeon Bycatch, Bycatch Mortality And Other Regulatory Discard Mortality In Virginia’S Winter/Spring Striped Bass And Other Gill Net Fisheries, Kelly Place
Reports
There were numerous objectives for this two year project, In general. objectives for the 2006 portion followed those proposed in 2005. The first was lo evaluate sturgeon interactions with the anchored gill net striped bass and other fisheries in the spring and the fall. The second was to evaluate sturgeon interactions in the striped bass fishery and to some extent, other anchored gill net fisheries. Third, was to determine the effects of various mesh sizes and gauges on bycatch and mesh/gauge specific size distributions. The fourth was to gather critical abundance, mortality and DNA data on sturgeon in Virginia waters. …

Gis-Based Analysis Of Ice-Breeding Seal Strandings In The Gulf Of Maine, David Harris Ph.D., Sat Gupta

Phoca groenlandica (harp seals) and Cystophora cristata (hooded seals), two species of ice-breeding seals, are being sighted more frequently onshore in the Gulf of Maine since 1990, but little is known about their behavior in this ecosystem. We obtained records of 904 ice-breeding seal stranding locations in the Gulf of Maine between 1996 and 2002 from NOAA Fisheries and used a geographic information system (GIS) to conduct group-wise comparisons by species (using non-parametric techniques), and to determine the predictors of high seal-stranding density (using ordinal logistic regression analysis). Compared to harp seals, hooded seals stranded closer to deep water, farther …

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Upper Mississippi River-Illinois Waterway System (UMR-IWW) Navigation Study was completed in September 2004 after more than 14 years of intensive study and evaluation of the navigation improvement and ecological restoration needs for the UMR-IWW system for the years 2000-2050. The final recommendation included a program of incremental implementation and comprehensive adaptive management to achieve the dual purposes of ensuring a sustainable natural ecosystem and navigation system. The program was initiated in 2005 as the working title of Upper Mississippi River (UMR) System Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program (NESP) (USACE 2006).

Native Salt Marsh Plants And Animals: Flora And Fauna Respond To Restoration Projects, John Portnoy
Native Salt Marsh Plants And Animals: Flora And Fauna Respond To Restoration Projects, John Portnoy
United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications
Cape Cod National Seashore has an active program of estuarine restoration for the nearly 2500 acres of Outer Cape coastal marshes altered profoundly since the construction of tide-restricting dikes and causeways during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Tides were restricted by roads and railways built across coastal wetlands, and by dikes intended to limit floodwater mosquito breeding and to promote lowland agriculture. With tide restoration under way since 1999 at 90-acre Hatches Harbor in Provincetown, and just beginning in 700-acre East Harbor (also referred to as Pilgrim Lake) in Truro, both native and introduced plants and animals are responding.
