3d Library From Body Size From Unconventional Specimens: A 3d Geometric Morphometrics Approach To Fishes From Ancestral Pueblo Contexts, Jonathan Dombrosky, Thomas F. Turner, Alexandra Harris, Emily Lena Jones

Anthropology Faculty & Staff Publications

Animal body size estimation from zooarchaeological specimens often relies on specific, one-dimensional (i.e., conventional) measures from skeletal elements. Here, we introduce an animal body size estimation technique for archaeological fishes that relies on 3D reference scans and the calculation of centroid size, a standard 3D geometric morphometric proxy measure for organism size. Centroid size-based estimations on whole caudal vertebrae are strongly correlated with a widely accepted measure (i.e., centrum width), but the scalability and flexibility of the centroid size-based approach allows for use on a wide variety of fragmented remains. We use zooarchaeological fish remains (subfamily Ictiobinae) from late pre-Hispanic …

Movement Probabilities Of Bigheaded Carps (Hypophthalmichthys Spp.) In The Illinois River Estimated From Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods, A. A. Coulter, M. K. Brey, M. Lubjeko, J. L. Kalis, D. Coulter, D. C. Glover, G. W. Whitledge, J. E. Garvey

NRM Departmental Data Sets

Previously published work used program MARK to estimate parameters for multistate models for Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and Silver Carp (H. molitrix) (Coulter et al. 2018) movements in the Illinois River. Multistate models estimate transition probability (psi), survival probability (S), and detection probability (p) and models with those parameters varying by state and time (state*time), just state (state), just time (time), and neither (.) were evaluated for each species (Coulter et al. 2018). Using the format of the top model for each species identified in Coulter et al. (2018), Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods were …

Maps Depicting Extent Of Suitable Habitat For Juvenile Striped Bass Morone Saxatilis In Chesapeake Bay, 1996-2019, Rachel L. Dixon, Mary C. Fabrizio, Troy D. Tuckey, Aaron J. Bever Jan 2022

Maps Depicting Extent Of Suitable Habitat For Juvenile Striped Bass Morone Saxatilis In Chesapeake Bay, 1996-2019, Rachel L. Dixon, Mary C. Fabrizio, Troy D. Tuckey, Aaron J. Bever

Data

To depict the extent of suitable habitat for striped bass age-0 to -4 across a range of environmental conditions, six years between 1996 and 2019 were selected to represent relatively low, high, and average thermal (warm, average, cool) and hydrologic (wet, average, dry) conditions in the Chesapeake Bay.

Habitat suitability maps for each age class, survey, and season combination studied for juvenile striped bass are provided as data layers suitable for GIS use as .asc files for each of these six years. Habitat suitability indices were estimated using procedures described in Dixon et al. (2022; see associated publication below).

Examining Trends In Taste Preferences, Market Demand, And Annual Catch In An Indigenous Marine Turtle Fishery In Southwest Madagascar, Kristin Jones Apr 2011

Examining Trends In Taste Preferences, Market Demand, And Annual Catch In An Indigenous Marine Turtle Fishery In Southwest Madagascar, Kristin Jones

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The worldwide exploitation of marine turtles has been common throughout human history, turtle products including carapaces for decoration and use, skin for leather, and eggs and meat for consumption. The hunting of marine turtles has long established economic importance among Madagascar's coastal inhabitants and is an activity traditionally associated with integral cultural and spiritual values. Due to overexploitation and a combination of relatively newer threats such as pollution, habitat loss, and incidental fisheries take, however, all marine turtle species in the Indian Ocean are considered to be endangered or critically endangered. Although Madagascar's marine turtles have been legally protected from …
