Despite early promise and an optimal environment, aquaculture has grown more slowly in Maine than it has in other parts of the United States and the world. As Philip Conkling explains, this is due to market forces, scientific and technical issues, cultural opposition, and, more recently, the threat of an endangered species listing for Atlantic salmon.
