An Interregional Study Of Kenya's Livestock Sector Using Linear Programming, Zakayo Joseph Mwangi May 1981

An Interregional Study Of Kenya's Livestock Sector Using Linear Programming, Zakayo Joseph Mwangi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The major purpose of this study was to determine the least-cost method of producing red meat in Kenya. Linear programming was used in the study. A simulated reduction of grazing land available in one of the settlement areas was carried out to indicate what effect this had on the overall regional production pattern of meat in the country.

Kenya was divided into eleven livestock producing and consuming regions. 1979 was used as the base year, and the demand projection was based on the 1979 population. Input and output coefficients, livestock unit requirements, and market prices were developed. A linear programming …

The Economic Impact Of Potential Changes In Federal Grazing Policies On Ranchers In Wayne County, Utah, Kib Elden Jacobson May 1981

The Economic Impact Of Potential Changes In Federal Grazing Policies On Ranchers In Wayne County, Utah, Kib Elden Jacobson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to select an area in Utah that was predominantly livestock oriented which used federal lands for livestock grazing, and to develop model ranches exemplifying the typical live-stock operation in the area. These model ranches were then used in a Budget Generator Program (BG) and a Linear Programming framework (LP) to simulate reductions of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% reductions of BLM land usage. The results were then used to determine income changes, herd size changes, and resource usage in the models as the reductions took place.

The area chosen was Wayne County, Utah because …

Natural Pastures Of The Macquarie Region Of New South Wales: Their Origin, Composition And Management, David Leslie Michaelk May 1981

Natural Pastures Of The Macquarie Region Of New South Wales: Their Origin, Composition And Management, David Leslie Michaelk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two experiments were conducted in the semi-arid (400 millimeter annual rainfall) Macquarie region of New South Wales, Australia, at the Trangie Agricultural Research Station (31° 59'S; 147° S7'E), to examine (a) the way botanical parameters can be used to separate grazing and climatic impacts on range vegetation, and (b) how this delineation affects application of range science tenets (site, condition and trend) to different pasture types.

Two range sites were studied: Site 1, a light soil type, was dominated by annual grasses, legumes and forbs, whereas perennial grasses (mainly Chloris acieularis and Chloris truncata) dominated the heavy soils of …

The Use Of Linear Measurements For Determining Growth Rate & Size In Cattle, C. Norman Mcglohon May 1981

The Use Of Linear Measurements For Determining Growth Rate & Size In Cattle, C. Norman Mcglohon

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The calves born in the 1979 and 1980 calf crops at Sam Sells and Sons' Polled Hereford Farm in Moultrie, Georgia, were used in a study comparing immature body measurements with subsequent growth. The measurements taken at birth included weight, front leg length, front cannon bone length, and rear cannon bone length. In addition, hip height was measured at one hundred days, seven months, and twelve months of age. Weight was taken at seven months, twelve months and fifteen months of age.

The data were analyzed in four groups according to year of birth and sex. Coefficients of correlation were …

Fluoride Toxicity In Grape Vines : A Case Study, Walter Jacob Cox, L T. Jones Jan 1981

Fluoride Toxicity In Grape Vines : A Case Study, Walter Jacob Cox, L T. Jones

Technical Bulletins

The onset of visual damage varied with the season. The symptoms consisted of marginal and tip necrosis in the early stages with the necrotic areas gradually expanding between the veins. In severe cases the leaves shed. Old leaves were affected first although foliage of any age was affected in cases of severe fluoride pollution. Plant analysis indicated that damage was associated with concentrations in excess of 20 ppm fluoride.

Alfalfa Seed Production, Lyle A. Derscheid, Robert J. Walstrom Jan 1981

Alfalfa Seed Production, Lyle A. Derscheid, Robert J. Walstrom

SDSU Extension Circulars

Alfalfa seed has high market value: producing certified adapted seed can become a more important enterprise for some South Dakota farmers. Around 100,000 acres are harvested for seed each year, but tho yield per acre is relatively low. Most producers harvest seed on a hit-and-miss basis. Only a few treat alfalfa seed as a major crop. Much of the alfalfa seed planted in South Dakota is raised in southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, southeastern Washington, and the San Joaquin Valley of California. But the acreage of certified seed of varieties recommended for South Dakota is gradually shrinking in western states. These …
