Transfer Of A \Beta-Glucuronidase Reporter Gene To Sugarbeet (Beta Vulgaris L.) Via Microprojectile Bombardment, Sertaç Önde, Melahat Bi̇rsi̇n, Mustafa Yildiz, Cengi̇z Sancak, Murat Özgen

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

For the transfer of a \beta -Glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene to sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) callus and leaf explants by microprojectile bombardment, various rupture disk pressures and sample plate distances were tested. By coating the pBI221.23 DNA construct over the gold particles, bombardments were carried out by the DuPont PDS-1000/He system and the results clearly indicated the superiority of leaf explants over the callus structures as targets. The sample plate distances affected the distribution pattern of the particles and the cells expressing the GUS reporter gene were noted to be aggregated in short distances whereas longer distance shots yielded better …

Desiccation of somatic embryos under different air humidities conditioned by saturated salt solutions for different dura-tions; relationships between desiccation and germination or root formation in the dark; and effects of desiccation and gibberellic acid on germinating of 'Su-2' walnut somatic embryonic embryo line were investigated. Survival of embryos was low (about 10%) or zero when loss of fresh weight was about 90% and dry matter was about 70%. The highest germinating percentages (13.3-23.3%) were obtained with about 40.4-77.3% of loss of fresh weight and 9.1-34.6% of dry matter of desiccated embryos in covered plates over saturated MgCl 2 .6H 2 …

In both years the highest fruit weights were recorded in seedling rootstocks (158.2 g and 170.1 g). The effect of the rootstocks on fruit height in 1995 and 1996 was significant but the effect on fruit diameter was not. The highest fruit height (67.14 and 68.89 mm) and fruit diameter (72.40 and 73.69 mm) were obtained in seedling rootstocks. The effects of rootstocks on fruit firmness were inconsistent in both years. …

Effect Of Zinc Microelement On Quality Of Some Wheat Cultivars Grown In Central Anatolia, Gülcan Kinaci Jan 2000

Effect Of Zinc Microelement On Quality Of Some Wheat Cultivars Grown In Central Anatolia, Gülcan Kinaci

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Almost half of the cultivated areas of Turkey have been found to be zinc deficient. This deficiency is even more serious in Central Anatolia, the large cereal-producing region. Zinc is an essential element for nourishing plants, and also for normal development and functioning of humans and animals. Meeting the daily zinc requirement from diet is very difficult for people whose daily energy intake is based on cereals. However, wheat bread by itself contributes 40-70 % of daily energy intake for Turkish people. One way to overcome this problem is by increasing the zinc content of wheat by applying zinc to …

The rooting capabilities of the cuttings of Karabaş Lavender which were gathered from different locations, one (Işİklİ) on the coast of Mediterranean and the other one (Narlİca) near Antakya, were investigated. The cuttings were treated with 1 000, 2 000 and 4 000 ppm IBA doses and the cuttings with no IBA treatment were used as control. The effects of IBA on rooting were investigated. The rooting ratios of the cuttings gathered from Işİklİ were higher than those of the cuttings gathered from Narlİca. The …

The Use Of Geographical Information Systems In Selecting Forest Road Routes, Orhan Erdaş, Selçuk Gümüş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

During the forest road planning process, the determination of road routes requires the evaluation of many factors. The data needed for forest road planning are obtained from different sources with different standards. The variation in data sources causes problems in the effective and collective usage of these data. Geographical Information Systems is a frequently used tool in the decision making progress. It use database queries to find the best solution requiring the least time and money. In this study, the forest road routes on digital map are prepared in order to reach each point of the area of the planning …

Relationship Between Leaf Area Index At Anthesis And Yield In Wheat Under Çukurova Conditions, Müjde Koç, Celaleddi̇n Barutçular

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Wheat yields are closely related to leaf area index (LAI) at anthesis. The optimum leaf area index differs according to genotype and location conditions. Three field experiments were conducted to determine the pattern of the relationship between LAI at anthesis and yield in Çukurova , a region with an acclerated ear and grain growth. Different genotypes, seeding density and nitrogen doses were used to create a range of LAI. Biological yield (BY) and grain yield (GY) increased quadratically in response to LAI values, with greater responses for BY (R 2 =0.46**) than for GY (R 2 =0.35**). As LAI increased …

In the Bursa plain, Regosols are extensively cultivated soils for horticultural crops and irrigated by water from aquifers. These soils are quite widespread on the west side of the plain and developed on different types of parent materials. This research was carried out to determinate genesis and classification of the Regosols developed on calcareous colluvium material. Five soil profiles were examined in this research and their characterization included field morphology and physico-chemical analysis. The soils were classified according to the systems of FAO/Unesco (1990), FitzPatrick (1988), and USDA Soil Taxonomy (1994). The soils show high sand and calcium carbonate contents …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Five strawberry cultivars were grown as frigo seedlings planted in July by using two management systems, open grow-ing and high tunnel, in 1996 and 1997. Yield, earliness and some quality characters were observed. The high tunnel system made the crop 2-3 weeks earlier than the open field system with a longer period. Yield was also high in the high tunnel system with 1053 grams per plant while it was 877 grams in open growing. Miranda was the highest yielding cultivar in both management systems. Cultivars Camarosa and Miranda were superior for fruit weight and the rate of high quality.
