Defrenne, Caitlin Petro, Avni Malhotra, Jessica A.M. Moore, Joanne Childs, Paul J. Hanson, Colleen M. Iversen, Joel E. Kostka

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2

Warming and elevated CO2 (eCO2) are expected to facilitate vascular plant encroachment in peatlands. The rhizosphere, where microbial activity is fueled by root turnover and exudates, plays a crucial role in biogeochemical cycling, and will likely at least partially dictate the response of the belowground carbon cycle to climate changes. We leveraged the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment, to explore the effects of a whole-ecosystem warming gradient (+0°C to 9°C) and eCO2 on vascular plant fine roots and their associated microbes. We combined trait-based approaches with the profiling of fungal and prokaryote communities in plant roots …

A Comparison Of Larvicide And Garlic Mineral Salts On Horn Fly Populations, Kristina N. Dees, Benjamin J. Schrag

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

For this research project, we studied three separate pastures containing Fort Hays State University’s Holstein cows. One pasture was our control group, with no horn fly protection applied. Another pasture had cattle that were fed with garlic in their mineral salts, an all-natural horn fly prevention method. Our final pasture contained cows sprayed with a larvicide. This was a single-blind study, meaning I did not know which pasture had what treatment, but my professor knew. Throughout the late summer and early fall of 2023, we went out to each pasture and took pictures of ten cows per pasture. Then, using …

Conservation plans for a species often requires knowledge of population trends. These trends can be difficult to acquire, but one piece of information that can be attained from populations is the catch per unit effort (CPUE). We are trying to use CPUE in a new way to determine population demography for populations of Iotichthys phlegethontis, Least Chub.

Understanding The Impact Of Post-Translational Modifications On Nucleosome Positioning, Bronwyn Kennington-Nitz, Steven Johnson, Sophie Lo, Michael Mann, David Bates

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

The placement of histones along DNA is known to be a significant factor in determining gene expression in eukaryotic cells, with post-translational modifications (or PTMs) helping modulate gene expression by acting as an intermediate to other factors. Using the Lys>Gln and Acetyl-Lys mutations of H3, our working hypothesis is that acetylation will decrease the overall strength of positioning, and that mutations will have an identical or nearly identical effect on nucleosome positioning.

Status Epilepticus (SE) is a severe medical condition marked by continuous seizures lasting over 5 minutes. When SE becomes resistant to anticonvulsant drugs, the condition is known as Refractory Status Epilepticus (RSE), which lacks effective treatments and has a mortality rate of 38%. RSE lacks effective treatments partially due to our limited understanding of the mechanisms that lead to patient antiepileptic drug resistance.

Tree Damage Patterning In Alaskan Forests, Emma Barton, Richard Gill, Haden Penrod Mar 2024

Tree Damage Patterning In Alaskan Forests, Emma Barton, Richard Gill, Haden Penrod

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

• Tree defoliation (from insect parasites) is not abnormal in the densely forested areas of Alaska, but large outbreak events in recent years have led to cause for alarm.

• To better understand the factors affecting defoliation, we used remote sensing and GIS (geospatial information system) technologies to look at mortality spatial patterns across Hemlock and Spruce forests in southeast Alaska.

• Elevation and proximity to water as well as other factors were considered in determining the impacts of outbreak events due to evidence that changes in landscape can alter parasitism behaviors (Roland & Taylor, 1997).

Theranostic Approaches To Treat Synovial Sarcoma, Machenzie Burr, Jared Barrott, Jeffrey Okojie, Delaney Anderson, Peyton Worley, Jack Davis, Bridger Kearns, Melanie I'Anson-Holton

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Synovial sarcomas (SS) are rare soft tissue cancers that are found beside bone in children and adolescents. Currently, the prognosis for these diseases are low, as diagnostic and treatment options are limited due to the rarity of the disease. With high rates of metastasis, treatment options for these diseases become further limited to primarily radiation and chemotherapies. These therapies have limited specificity in their mechanisms, causing severe side effects in patients. This work examined alternative options for synovial sarcoma theranostic approaches, specifically using immunoconjugates for Oncostatin M Receptors (OSMR). This receptor was chosen due to the high rate of expression …

The Role Of Sirt7 In Beta Cell Function And Insulin Secretion, Trevor C. Kendrick, Jeffrey S. Tessem, Connor Littlefield

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by an inability of beta cells to produce or secrete insulin due to decreasing beta cell mass, a condition induced by beta cell death or overuse. Current treatment consists of daily administration of insulin to diabetic individuals. We have shown that Sirtuin 7 (Sirt7), a deacetylase located in the nucleus, directly interacts with Nkx6.1, a transcription factor essential for beta cell function and proliferation. We have shown that one of the post translational modifications that impinges on Nkx6.1 activity is acetylation. Given Sirt7’s role as a deacetylase, and published reports demonstrating its impact …

INTRODUCTION

• Exercise is a critical aspect of healthy living due in part to its effects of muscle adaptation, which are largely regulated by alterations in gene expression

• Sedentary behavior can be required by diverse life circumstances, suggesting a need to reproduce the beneficial effects of exercise by an alternative means

• Like exercise, percussive massage introduces a mechanical strain on the muscle, which could potentially replicate a similar remodeling response of the extracellular matrix (ECM). However, this has not yet been studied

• Collagen 1,3,&4 are major components of the ECM that adapt in response to exercise, and …

The Changing Tumor Microenvironment Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Mackenzie Hansen, Kim O'Neill, Qin Zhou, Yoko Derose, Magdalena Kovacsovics, Benjamin Brintz, Benjamin L. Witt, Siwen Hu-Lieskovan

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death in the United States, and non-small cell (NSCLC) is the most common type. An increasingly prevalent treatment in the last few years for NSCLC has been immunotherapy. However, for immunotherapy to be the most effective, we need to have a better understanding of how the immune system interacts with cancer in all stages. Specifically, we need to know where the immune cells reside, how they interact with each other, and how these populations change as the disease progresses. To define the tumor microenvironment, we stained 27 whole tumor slides with …

Targeting Hsp90: A Novel Approach To Combat Synovial Sarcomas, Peyton Worley, Jared Barrott, Matt Kirkham, Drake Heithoff

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Synovial sarcomas are rare muscle cancers that have very few targeted therapies. HSP90 is a protein upregulated in this form of cancer and many others. A screening of this cancer was done in vitro, using FDA-approved drugs, showing that HSP90 could be a promising treatment option. A novel HSP90 inhibitor was applied to human and mouse synovial sarcoma cell lines and was analyzed after receiving a drug treatment for HSP90.

Humectants are an important class of compounds that attract and retain water within a cell. When mixed with water to create wetting solutions, humectants can prevent desiccation of cadaveric specimens1. Recognizing a relative scarcity of comparative studies analyzing the effects of various wetting solutions on post-preservation cadaveric maintenance, we utilized wet-dry analysis in order to compare the effects of four common humectants on water retention in human cadaveric tissue including brain, cardiac muscle, liver, lung, skeletal muscle, and skin. We created a concentration gradient for each humectant to identify the optimal concentrations of each compound for …

Nkx6.1 And Stx1a As Binding Partners In Pancreatic Beta Cells, Jakob T. Lenker, Jeff S. Tessem, Connor C. Littlefield

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Diabetes is characterized by a loss in beta cell function within the pancreas and the subsequent inability to produce sufficient insulin to regulate blood glucose. While current diabetes treatments focus on delivering pharmaceutical insulin to diabetic individuals, such treatments are temporary solutions and do not address the root of the issue. Instead, our research focuses on potential mechanisms for inducing greater insulin secretion within the pancreas of the individual. NK6 Homeobox 1 (Nkx6.1) is a major transcription factor in beta cells and its overexpression in beta cells is associated with higher insulin secretion. Previous research indicates that Syntaxin 1A (Stx1A) …

Mmappr2: An Improved Bioinformatics Approach To Find Novel Genes, Aiden Cardall, Jonathon T. Hill, Kyle Johnsen, Connor Ward, Maliha Tasnim, Jared Taylor

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Introduction

• New genes are commonly found by randomly inducing mutations in model organisms.

• Mapping the mutations to the genome to find novel genes is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive.

• We created a bioinformatics program, MMAPPR, to automate this process.

• Here, we introduce a new algorithm, MMAPPR2, which requires little to no bioinformatics knowledge to use.

• MMAPPR2 makes several improvements that allow it to identify genes more rapidly and precisely.

• MMAPPR2 will aid the rapid identification of genes in a wide range of species and developmental systems.

Invasive Phragmites Effect On Utah Wetlands Soil Composition, Cecilia Steffen, Rachel Wood, Madison L. Brown

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024

Introduction

• Invasive Phragmites australis (referred to as Phragmites), invaded Utah wetlands in the 1980's. Efforts have been made since then to remove Phragmites through various treatments.

• Phragmites outcompetes other wetland plants, causing it to be the dominant species. This is called a monoculture.

• Utah's wetlands are important for many species migrations, filtration, and nutrient cycling.

• How do Phragmites treatments effect soil nutrients and moisture? How do untreated Phragmites wetlands compare to native dominant wetlands?
