Trace Metals And Minor Elements In Southern Gulf Of Mexico Sediments Following The Ixtoc Marine Oil Blow Out Event, 2015, David W. Hastings, Thomas Bartlett Feb 2018

Trace Metals And Minor Elements In Southern Gulf Of Mexico Sediments Following The Ixtoc Marine Oil Blow Out Event, 2015, David W. Hastings, Thomas Bartlett

C-IMAGE data

Our objective is to compare the impact of two marine oil well blowouts on surface sediments in the Gulf of Mexico: the recent 2010 DWH blowout in the Northern Gulf with the Ixtoc blowout in 1979/80 in the Southern Gulf. A suite of trace and minor elements (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Sr, Cd, Mo, Ba, Re, and U) some of which are sensitive to changes in sedimentary redox conditions, was analyzed in bulk surface sediments; that data is presented here. Sediment cores were collected in the SE GoM on a research cruise on the R/V Justo Sierra …

DEEPEND Datasets

The deep sea ecosystem is believed to contain the highest biomass of fish in the oceans. However, the taxonomic diversity in this ecosystem is incompletely described and likely to be vastly underestimated. DNA sequence data (barcodes) have become a key tool to discover hidden biodiversity. We generated mitochondrial DNA barcode datasets based on the Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene from deep sea fishes. These data were analyzed using phylogenetic and statistical methods to reveal cryptic species and make taxonomic linkages between adult fishes and their early life stages. These datasets were generated from fishes collected in the northern Gulf …

Mitochondrial And Nuclear Sequences For Phylogenetic Analysis Of Three Cephalopod Species, Northern Gulf Of Mexico, May 2015 To May 2017, Amanda Sosnowki

DEEPEND Datasets

The midwater column contains a wide diversity of cephalopods in the northern Gulf of Mexico. DNA sequence data (barcodes) have become a key tool to discover hidden biodiversity. We generated mitochondrial DNA barcode datasets based on the Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI), 16s, and 28s genes from cephalopods. These data were analyzed using phylogenetic methods to examine possible connectivity of 3 species (Vampyroteuthis infernalis, Pyroteuthis margaritifera, and Cranchia scabra) between two basins, the Gulf of Mexico and the area surrounding Bear Seamount in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean. These datasets were generated from cephalopods collected in the northern Gulf of Mexico …

Release From Intraspecific Competition Promotes Dominance Of A Non-Native Invader, Robert Warren Jan 2018

Release From Intraspecific Competition Promotes Dominance Of A Non-Native Invader, Robert Warren

Biology Faculty Datasets

Species can coexist through equalizing (similar fitness abilities) and stabilizing (unique niche requirements) mechanisms – assuming that intraspecific competition imposes more limitation than interspecific competition. Non-native species often de-stabilize coexistence, suggesting that they bring either a fitness advantage or a distinct niche requirement. We tested whether greater fitness or unique niche requirements best explained a successful North American invasion by the European Myrmica rubra ant. North American invaded-range M. rubra aggressively sting and occur in enormous numbers (suggesting a fitness advantage), yet our study site has a history of anthropogenic disturbance that might favor M. rubra (suggesting a unique niche). …

Interacting Effects Of Urbanization And Coastal Gradients On Ant Thermal Responses, Robert Warren Jan 2018

Interacting Effects Of Urbanization And Coastal Gradients On Ant Thermal Responses, Robert Warren

Biology Faculty Datasets

Urban-to-rural gradients intersect with other, often unmeasured, environmental gradients that may influence or even supersede species responses. Here we use coastal-to-interior and urban-rural gradients to investigate woodland ant response (physiological thermal tolerance, community structure and spring phenology) to two overlapping thermal gradients, the Great Lakes (Erie and Ontario) and the Buffalo, NY urban center (USA). Woodland ant physiological and behavioral responses, and community responses, shifted along the coastal-to-interior and urban-rural gradients, but they were generally best explained by lake effects (though urban ants tolerated higher temperatures than rural ants). The relatively colder spring temperatures in coastal areas (as compared to …

Tissue Expression Patterns Identify Mouse Cilia Genes, Timothy S. Mcclintock Jan 2018

Tissue Expression Patterns Identify Mouse Cilia Genes, Timothy S. Mcclintock

Physiology Research Data

A summary of 2,127 mouse genes linked to cilia by previous high-throughput approaches (reviewed in Inglis et al., 2006), published studies of individual gene products, or by McClintock et al. 2008. Each gene was viewed at Entrez Gene to verify and update the Gene ID and Gene Symbol. Each was also searched against PubMed (Gene Symbol AND (cili* OR flagel*)) for published evidence linking the mouse gene or putative orthologs to cilia or flagella. This searchable file lists identifying information about each gene, functional information about the encoded protein, the number of high-throughput studies linking the gene to cilia, and …

Comparison Of Porifera Bacterial Symbiont Community Profiles Based On Host Species And Source Template, Celeste Banfill, Jose Lopez

Lopez Laboratory: Genomics & Microbial Data

The present microbiome study reports a follow up microbiome characterization of the Porifera Tree of Life (PorToL) project, which has recognized the significance of understanding the evolutionary relationships among diverse sponge taxa (Redmond et al 2012; Thacker et al, 2013; and see http://Portol.org). The aim of this research is to opportunistically expand on the work of Hill et al. (2013) to provide preliminary data that 1) compares the diversity of bacterial communities across eight sponge taxa and 2) compares the differences between DNA and cDNA (RNA) generated 16S rRNA data to distinguish active vs. non-active bacteria.

"Distribution Of The North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In Northern California" Appendix, Cara L. Appel, William J. Zielinski, Frederick V. Schlexer, Richard Callas, Tim Bean

Research Data Sets

Western Wildlife 4:17–28, 2017: The North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is one of the most widely distributed mammals in North America, but recent reports have suggested declines in parts of its range in the West. In California, we know little about porcupines’ historical or current status; maps of porcupine distribution conflict considerably. Nevertheless, the species is of interest to natural resource managers. For much of the 1900s, foresters and others primarily treated porcupines as pests because of the undesirable damage they inflict by feeding on trees and gnawing on manmade items in search of salt. More recently, porcupines …

Spatially-Dependent Biotic And Abiotic Factors Drive Survivorship And Physical Structure Of Green Roof Vegetation, Jason Aloisio Aug 2016

Spatially-Dependent Biotic And Abiotic Factors Drive Survivorship And Physical Structure Of Green Roof Vegetation, Jason Aloisio

Student Publications

Plant survivorship depends on biotic and abiotic factors that vary at local and regional scales. This survivorship, in turn, has cascading effects on community composition and the physical structure of vegetation. Survivorship of native plant species is variable among populations planted in environmentally stressful habitats like urban roofs, but the degree to which factors at different spatial scales affect survivorship in urban systems is not well understood. We evaluated the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on survivorship, composition and physical structure of two native perennial species assemblages, one characterized by a mixture of C4 grasses and forbs (Hempstead …
