Dataset: Catch Of Egg-Bearing Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) From 1995 To 2019 In The James River And Chesapeake Bay Mainstem, Alexandra K. Schneider, Mary C. Fabrizio, Romuald N. Lipcius

Data

Monthly catch of egg-bearing blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Trawl Survey are provided in a CSV file. Catch data is aggregated over all stations sampled per month for the Chesapeake Bay mainstem and James River from 1995 to 2019. Months are limited to February, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November. Sampling protocols and methods for the survey can be found in Tuckey and Fabrizio 2022 (Estimating Relative Juvenile Abundance of Ecologically Important Finfish in the Virginia Portion of Chesapeake Bay) doi: 10.25773/9WV1‐PS18. The catch values have been adjusted to account for …

Dataset: Effect Of Light Regiment On Farrowing Performance And Behavior In Sows, Shelby Mcloda, Nichole Anderson, Jennifer Earing, Drew Lugar

Faculty Publications - Agriculture

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of light exposure on farrowing performance in sows. Thirty sows were moved to the farrowing unit at d 110 of gestation and assigned a treatment: 12 h light/12 h dark cycle (Dark) or 24 h light (Light). Treatments began upon entry into the farrowing unit. Video was recorded continuously from initiation of the treatments until completion of farrowing. Data collected included duration of farrowing, birthing interval, and behavior during farrowing. Additionally, number of total born, liveborn, and stillborn piglets were recorded. Gestation length was different between treatments, with a shorter …

Environmental Conditions At Fish Capture Sites In Virginia Waters, 2000 -2016, Mary C. Fabrizio, Troy D. Tuckey, Aaron J. Bever, Michael L. Macwilliams

Data

Environmental data are provided in CSV and xlsx formats which can be read in Excel or imported into other software programs such as R, SAS, and MatLab. Surface and bottom temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen data were collected by the VIMS Juvenile Fish Trawl Survey program under the direction of Drs. M. C. Fabrizio and T. D. Tuckey.

Stations were selected for sampling from a stratified random design, and collections occurred monthly from 2000 to 2016. Protocols and methodological details can be found in Tuckey and Fabrizio 2021 (Estimating Relative Juvenile Abundance of Ecologically Important Finfish in the Virginia Portion …

Research Data Sets

North American Porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) have a broad geographic distribution across much of the continent, but recent evidence suggests that their populations may be declining in some areas, including the Pacific Northwest. Estimating baseline historical and contemporary distributions of Porcupines is necessary for initiating monitoring efforts and, if necessary, informing strategic conservation actions. We compiled 1905 occurrence records of Porcupines in Washington, Oregon, and northern California from 1908 to 2018. Using maximum entropy modeling (Maxent), we created historical and contemporary distribution models based on Porcupine records from 1981–2010 and 2012–2018, respectively, to match the temporal scale of available …

Data For Rosenberger & Conforti. Native And Agricultural Grassland Use By Stable And Declining Bumble Bees In Midwestern North America. Insect Cons. & Div., Derek W. Rosenberger, Mckenna Conforti

Faculty Scholarship – Biology

Little is known about how agricultural and native grasslands impact bumble bee populations in the Midwestern United States. We surveyed bumble bee populations over 3 years (2017-2019) at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in restored prairie, cattle and bison pastures. Raw data from that work is included in this file. These data were used in the manuscript "Native and agricultural grassland use by stable and declining bumble bees in Midwestern North America" by Derek Rosenberger and McKenna Conforti, and published in the journal Insect Conservation and Diversity in 2020.

"Distribution Of The North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In Northern California" Appendix, Cara L. Appel, William J. Zielinski, Frederick V. Schlexer, Richard Callas, Tim Bean

Research Data Sets

Western Wildlife 4:17–28, 2017: The North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is one of the most widely distributed mammals in North America, but recent reports have suggested declines in parts of its range in the West. In California, we know little about porcupines’ historical or current status; maps of porcupine distribution conflict considerably. Nevertheless, the species is of interest to natural resource managers. For much of the 1900s, foresters and others primarily treated porcupines as pests because of the undesirable damage they inflict by feeding on trees and gnawing on manmade items in search of salt. More recently, porcupines …
