Vegetation Mosaic Around The First Center Of Tourism Development In The Uludağ Mountain, Bursa-Turkey, Gürcan Güleryüz, Hülya Arslan, Mustafa Gökçeoğlu, Helmut Rehder

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, the vegetation mosaic is determined by aerial photography and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques around the first center of tourism development in the Uludağ Mountain. The cover of plant communities and vegetation types is calculated in both absolute values (ha) and as percentage (%) of the total research area. Dwarf shrub communities ( Vaccinium myrtillus Juniperus communis, Juniperus communis and Astragalus angustifoliis comm.) are dominant with a cover of 53%. There ore some environmental problems caused by misuse of the area. The ruderal formation is dominant on the disturbed lands. It is widespread around the hotels, at …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Phenotypic plasticity was investigated in Commelina communis L. ( Commelinaceae), which is a perennial herb native to temperate Asia (China) and widely naturalised in the central and eastern Black Sea regions were investiguted C. communis has a relatively high ecological tolerance with respect to climatic and soil factors. It was found that the shoot length, leaf width, number of branches, dead leaves and flowers, root:shoot ratio, total -flower- and root biomasses, flower and root ni-trogen and RE 1 and RE 2 varied significantly in among the three populations. In addition, there were statistically important correlations between reproductive effort (RE) values …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The effects of various concentrations of Cytozyme Crop Plus (CCP) on Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. plant yield have been examined in this study. Single doses of 50 and 100 ml per decare of CCP were pulverized on seedlings of 15 cm height after second flowering, which have been given normal care. In addition, 50 ml per decare has been aplied twice in a separate parcel. The data obtained from the three replicates organized according to random blocks trial pattern have been compared with the control. In the trial parcel where daily irrigation and care procedures were carried out, specific yield values …

Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) In The Phytoplankton Of Keban Reservoir And Their Seasonal Variations, A. Kadri Çeti̇n, Bülent Şen

Turkish Journal of Botany

The seasonal variations of planktonic diatoms occurring in the Keban and Içme regions of Keban Reservoir were in-vestigated over a 2-year period (January 1991 - December 1992). A total of 104 diatom taxa were determined. Cyclotella ocellata Pantocksek, C. kützingiana Thwaites (Centrales), Asterionella formosa Hassall and Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton (Pennales) were the most conspicuous diatoms in terms of frequency of occurrence and numbers of individuals in the phytoplankton. The species composition and seasonal growth properties of the diatoms differed in the Keban and Içme regions of the lake. Although the quan-tity of diatoms tended to increase in all seasons, spring …

Nitrogen Mineralization In The Soils Of Some Grassland Communities In The Alpine Region Of Uludag In Bursa-Turkey, Gürcan Güleryüz

Turkish Journal of Botany

Nitrogen mineralization was investigated in controlled conditions (60% WHC, 20ºC) in the soil of some alpine grassland communities. A significant correlation was found between the mineralization of nitrogen and certain soil factors (pH, WHC, Total Nitrogen and Organic Carbon). It was concluded that ammonification takes place at higher rates in grasslands which are dominated by Nardus stricta L. (Poaceae) plant species, whereas nitrification occurs at a higher rates in grasslands which are dominated by Festuca cyllenica Boiss. et Heldr. and F. punctoria Sm. (Poaceae).

The same sugars, in the water extraction were found in concentrations (w/w) of 24.62; 25.59; 7.43 and 0.114 %, respectively. In the other population, these values were 25.44; 23.23; 14.24 and 0.023 for the ethanol extrac-tion, and 24.74; 24.98; 7.18 and 0.108 % …

Nonvolatile Acid Composition During Fruit Development Ofdiospyros Lotus L., F. Ahmet Ayaz, Asım Kadioğlu

Turkish Journal of Botany

Changes in nonvolatile acid contents during fruit development of Diospyros lotus L ( Ebenaceae) were studied. Suc-cinic, furmaric, malic, citric and azelaic acids were identified and quantified by gas chromatography. The quantities of all acids varied significantly during the fruit development. Malic and citric acids were generally predominant in all development stages. During havesting time (on day 331), fumaric acid was the most abundant acid in the fruits. Quantities of malic, succinic, fu-maric and citric acids (except azelaic acid) were found to be the highest in September (on day 271).

During the study period, the measured N/P ratio in the water varied from 10.3 mg/lt to 62.5. In accordance with these variations, P. simplex, P. morum and C. hirundinella, which consume high levels of phosphate, produced blooms in summer, whereas the blooms in winter were produced …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The pollen morphology of 14 species representing 5 genera of the subfamily Mimosoideae from Pakistan has been examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Mimosoideae are eurypalynous subfamily. The pollen grains are united (polyads) or free. Single grains are tricolporate and triangular - trilobed. The pollen morphology of the subfamily is significantly useful at generic and tribal level. The 3 pollen types recognized ie, Acacia nilotica - type, Mimlosa hamata - type and Prosopis juliflora - type, correspond closely with tribal classifications.

Turkish Journal of Botany

The effects of Polystimuline K (PS-K), as a cytokinin analogue, on delayed light component state (DF), intermittent fluorescence (IF) and chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratio was investigated in the leaves of different genotypes of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) under salt stress (155 mM Na Cl) for different periods of time. It was shown that in the early perioid of salt stress, DF and IF amplitudes are decreased, which is indicative of a Photosystem II (PS II) activity decrease. It is possibly related to the damage of chlorophyll in the PS II donor site and the decrease of Chl b molecules …

The Effect Of Storage Environment On Seed Survival And The Accumulationof Chromosomal Aberrations In Pea Landraces And Cultivars(Pisum Sativum L.), H. Özkan Si̇vri̇tepe, Anna M. Dourado

Turkish Journal of Botany

The relationship between loss of seed viability and the accumulation of chromosomal aberrations was investigated in both landraces and cultivars of the pea ( Pisum sativum L.). It was shown here, for the first time with pea landraces, that loss of seed viability is associated with an increase in the frequency of chromosomal abberrations, and that even small losses of viability result in some chromosomal damage in the seeds of pea landraces as well as in the seeds of pea cultivars. In addition, for a given loss of viability the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in either low or high moisture …

Turkish Journal of Botany

A. method is described for plant regeneration from unfertilized ovaries isolated from a diploid male sterile sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L.) breeding line that was developed at the Sugar Institute, Ankara, Turkey. Ovary explants were cultured on Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium containing 2.0 mg/l benzylaminopurine (BAP). Two treatments were tested by incubating all of the explants in darkness for 15 days, and then transferring one half to light and keeping the other half in darkness throughout the culture. Callus formation occurred in both treatments more or less at similar rates: however, there was a significant difference between the …
