Reports
This report represents the final report for the 3-year segment 1970-1973 and the annual report for the contract period 1 October 1972 to 15 October 197 3. The projec.t has been active since 1965, thus relevant data has been carried forward, added to, and analyzed in this report. The analysis, however, remains subject to later refinement and possible reinterpretation, because many of the jobs and objectives will require several additional years of study before definitive conclusions can be generalized.
The data presented here supercedes similar tables presented in previous annual reports because we have now standardized methods and solidified our …

Gastro-Intestinal And Abdominal Helminths Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) From Carroll And Jo Daviess Counties In Northern Illinois, Jeffrey Joseph Hodge
Masters Theses
Forty-four white-tailed deer shot by hunters in November and December, 1971, in Carroll and Jo Daviess counties in northwestern Illinois were necropsied for gastro-intestinal and abdominal helminths. Five species of gastro-intestinal nematodes were found: Gongylonema pulchrum, Ostertagia odocoilei, Haemonchus contortus, Trichuris ovis and Nematodirus sp. Setaria yehi, a filiariad nematode, was found in the abdominal cavity. Moniezia benedeni was the only cestode found. No trematodes were recovered. Differences in numbers and kinds of parasites found in northern Illinois and southern Illinois are discussed. Prevalence increased with host age for certain species of parasites and decreased or …
Beef In W.A., Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Beef In W.A., Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Bulletins - 3000 - 3999
There are four major regions of beef production in Western Australia, each suited to its own type of husbandry. In such a large area, climate plays an important part in limiting production off pasture and this is reflected in the different patterns of production that have emerged from the accumulated experience of working in these areas.

Farm Operations Management, H E. Fels, A. W. Hogstrom
Farm Operations Management, H E. Fels, A. W. Hogstrom
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The main defence of Australian farmers against the cost-price squeeze has been to increase productivity. The tendency is to run more and more stock per man and to grow more crop per man.
Some farmers run unusually large numbers of animal units per man-year.
The operations of 16 such farmers over one year were examined to find out whether it had been profitable for them to reduce labour inputs to such an extent.
Trends In Milking Systems, G W. Scott
Trends In Milking Systems, G W. Scott
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Twice daily milking is an essential task for the dairy farmer and the speed of milking influences the time available to him for other work and to the cows for extra grazing.
Modern milking systems can greatly contribute to these requirements by allowing the owner-farmer to handle a greater number of cows unaided, or in other situations to release labour from the shed for other work.
The following review leads from the better known basic sheds to the most modern types.
Lot Feeding Sheep In Sheds, H E. Fels, B. Malcolm
Lot Feeding Sheep In Sheds, H E. Fels, B. Malcolm
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The need to gather and hold sheep for slaughter or live shipment led a West Australian company!, with the Department of Agriculture, to investigate the use of sheds for short term lot feeding of sheep. Preliminary examination suggested that feedlot sheds connected by a sheep footpath to the abattoirs, railway or saleyards could be cheaper as well as more practicable than continued use of holding paddocks.
The first week or two are commonly the most difficult in lot feeding sheep or cattle. Long-term indoor lot-feeding is a normal practice in some overseas countries but we did not know whether untrained …

Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, introduced in 1971 by the Department of Fisheries and Fauna, is designed to ensure the long-term conservation of the grey kangaroo, while at the same time recognising the right of the landholder to protect his primary production from damage.
One of the points which has arisen after examination of the programme is that some individual farmers are not fully aware of the requirements of the regulations.
Management Policies For Increasing Sheep Turnoff, T Marshall
Management Policies For Increasing Sheep Turnoff, T Marshall
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
An increase in the proportion of mated ewes in West Australian flocks could increase the number of sheep available for sale, without greatly affecting total sheep numbers or reducing farm income. This would help overcome a critical sheep shortage.

Growth And Condition Of Rangia Cuneata In The James River, Virginia, Richard Knox Peddicord
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This project investigated several aspects of the autecology of the brackish water clam Rangia cuneata in the James River, Virginia. The study, conducted from August, 1970, through March, 1972, was primarily concerned with substrate and salinity effects on growth and condition index of R. cuneata. The studies were conducted in sand and mud substrates in four different salinity regimes. Monthly samples of 15 clams were collected at each of the eight stations for condition index determinations. Condition index was shown to vary seasonally, with a low point in early spring and a maximum in early fall. Values were higher in …

The Vitamin E Status Of Lactating Dairy Cows After Receiving Stored Feeds For 15 Months, Marc Dellhime Eckhart
The Vitamin E Status Of Lactating Dairy Cows After Receiving Stored Feeds For 15 Months, Marc Dellhime Eckhart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The trend in dairying in recent years has been towards more confinement housing and higher producing animals. Such confinement housing often leads to year-around feeding of stored feeds, such as silage, haylage, and hay with no pasture grazing or feeding of freshly cut forages. Since stored feeds contain substantially less vitamin E than those same forage when freshly cut or grazed, it may be important to re-evaluate the vitamin E status of cows fed stored feeds continuously. The requirement of cattle for vitamin E are largely unknown. The one study involving adult cattle, conducted 25 years ago, found that 1.82 …

Partial Characterization Of Animal Growth Inhibitors From Soybeans, Joseph Richard Uckert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The pH 4. 4 supernatant from raw (unheated) soybean meal was separated into 5 fractions on a Sephadex G-25 column in efforts to isolate the animal growth inhibitors present soybeans. Each fraction was added to the diet of growing mice and growth inhibition (GI) activity was determined by comparing their_ growth rates to g1"'owth rates achieved on an autoclaved soybean meal diet. Fractions I and II each contained about 50% of the GI activity, with a trace in fraction III and none in fractions IV and V. Only fraction I contained trypsin inhibitor and caused pancreatic enlargement. Fraction I was …

Taxonomic Relationship Of Hybrid Peafowl-Guineafowl: Preliminary Study Of Serum Proteins, Earl L. Hanebrink, Charles Gruver, Richard Van Grouw
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Disc electrophoresis of serum proteins was conducted for the peafowl, guineafowl, peafowl-guineafowl hybrid, and domesticated chicken. The four birds analyzed are of the same order but family status has been questioned. Serum protein patterns for all birds were similar in the anodic regions but different in the cathodic regions. The peafowl-guineafowl hybrid showed a pattern more similar to that of the peafowl than to that of the guineafowl. In morphologic characters the hybrid also was more similar to the peahen than to the guineafowl. In the cathodic region the serum protein pattern of the guineafowl was more unlike the patterns …

Efficacy Of Virginiamycin As A Prophylactic Drug To Prevent Swine Dysentery (1973), D A. Schoneweis, G A. Kennedy
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
Forty-eight feeder pigs were used in an experiment to determine Virginiamycin's effectiveness in preventing swine dysentery. Thirteen of 24 controls and one of 24 that received the antibiotic at either 25 or 50 grams per ton of feed died of swine dysentery or complications. Feed conversion ratio was markedly improved by the antibiotic. Virginiamycin was judged effective in preventing clinical cases of swine dysentery, but it has not been cleared for use in swine. Swine dysentery, also known as bloody dysentery, vibrionic dysentery, bloody scours, or black scours, is a infectious, enteric disease of swine. It is serious in many …

Beef Cattle Commercial Feedlot Studies Trial 1—Effects On Steer Performance Of Variable Protein Levels, Implanting, And Worming, Jack G. Riley, K.F. Harrison, D.L. Good
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
A 112-day trial used 280 mixed-breed yearling steers to study effects of varying protein levels in finishing steers rations. Crude protein content ranged from 15.1 percent for the first 28 days to 8.9 percent crude protein the final 28 days. Feeding a 15.1% crude protein ration for 28 days and a 13.2% crude protein ration the second 28 days or feeding a 13.2% crude protein ration for the first 56 days did not significantly improve total gain compared with feeding an 11.2% crude protein (control) ration.
Effects Of Supplemental Lysine, Methionine, And Threonine On Weanling Pigs Fed A Low-Protein Milo-Soybean Meal Diet (1973), G L. Allee
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
Three trials involving 331 weanling pigs (5 to 7 weeks old and weighing 20 to 33 pounds) were conducted to determine the effects of supplementing low-protein starter diets with crystalline amino aqids. In trials I and II, milo-soybean meal diets containing 12, 14, or 16% protein were supplemented so each contained the same quantity of lysine as an 18% protein, milo-soybean meal diet. Weight gain and feed efficiency of pigs fed the 16% protein lysine-supplemented diet was equivalent to that of pigs fed the 18% protein milo-soybean meal diet. Trial III evaluated 14, 16, 18, and 20% protein milo-soybean meal …

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization And Annual Burning Of Bluestem Pastures On Cows, Calves, And Vegetation, J.S. Woolfolk, R.R. Schalles, L.H. Harbers, Leland James Allen, E.F. Smith, Clenton E. Owensby
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
Six native Bluestem pastures and spring-calving cows were used to evaluate effects of burning and fertilizing pastures. Two pastures were controls, two were burned, and two were burned and fertilized with 40 pounds of urea nitrogen an acre applied aerially. Average daily gain of the calves did not differ significantly among pastures. Pounds of beef produced per acre was significantly higher from the burned, fertilized pastures, which supported heavier stocking rates with increased herbage production.
