To say that poverty remains one of the most pressing issues of our time is a colossal understatement. A staggering number of people on the planet live in poverty. In the United States alone, the working poor and those living at or below the poverty line make up 12.6 percent of our populace.' While these individuals may not all be in imminent danger of starving or homelessness, they often lack basic safeguards that those in the upper socio-economic levels of society take for granted: basic health insurance, access to pension programs, disability coverage, and the certainty of a living wage …

Ha fallecido en Perugia, a los 72 años, el Prof. Luigi Corsaro (1940-2012), que auspició y dirigió mis investigaciones jurídicas e interdisciplinarias por seis años (2000-2005). En el 2007, a pedido de una revista dirigida y editada por varios de mis alumnos más destacados, escribí estas páginas evocativas de sus enseñanzas y de su papel en mi formación académica. Las vuelvo a publicar, por este medio, confiando en que pueda difundirse entre el mayor público posible (especialmente entre los jóvenes estudiantes) la imagen de un jurista, de un Maestro cuyas lecciones universitarias y de vida me acompañarán por siempre.

This article contributes to the discussion of representation of traumatized clients through a detailed case study of the Katharine & George Alexander Community Law Center (KGACLC). First, it will discuss the issues that arise when students represent traumatized clients. This section will focus on the goals for training effective representation, the importance of such training, and the issues of duty of care and professional responsibility. Second, it will review the mechanics of training and mentoring law students who work with traumatized clients. This essay responds to the question of What next for law and behavioral biology? by describing an approach to legal scholarship that relies on the scientific method. There are two steps involved in this approach to legal scholarship. First, the legal scholar must become familiar with an area of scientific research that is relevant to the development of law and policy. (This essay uses behavioral biology research as an example.) Second, the legal scholar must seek and form relationships across disciplines, becoming an active member of a scientific research team that conducts studies relevant to particular issues of law and …

Storytelling is a fundamental part of legal practice, teaching, and thought. Telling stories as a method of practicing law reaches back to the days of the classical Greek orators. Before legal education became an academic matter, the apprenticeship system for training lawyers consisted of mentoring and telling war stories. As the law and literature movement evolved, it sorted itself into three strands: law in literature, law as literature, and storytelling. The storytelling branch blossomed.

Because child welfare cases in the world of professional practice require interdisciplinary collaboration, it would seem to follow that graduate students, who will become child welfare professionals, should be trained together, both in the classroom and in clinical settings. However, the implementation of interdisciplinary training is far from straightforward. In this Article, we focus on law and social work students. First, we describe the roles of lawyers and social worker in child welfare work. This article discusses the development of teaching legal ethics in light of the changes in the ethics rules over the years. The thesis is that many ethics rules reflect the needs of a cartel (the legal profession) to protect itself, rather than the need to protect the clients of lawyers. The author uses stories and examples to illustrate this thesis.
