Measurement, Analysis, And Comparison Of The Parcel Shipping Shock And Drop Environment Of The United States Postal Service With Commercial Carriers, J. A. Singh, S. P. Singh, G. Burgess, K. Saha

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The past decade has shown a great increase in the number of direct to consumer shipments of products and packages. As a result, parcel delivery companies like DHL, FedEx, UPS, and the USPS have strengthened their presence in air transport to deliver products faster and through larger distances. Using cargo planes, they route packages from various destinations to large airport hubs, where they sort millions of packages and ship them to their destinations. There is a continuous need to quantify what happens to these packages as they are handled both manually during collection and delivery and on large high-speed conveying …

Agile Mpc System Linking Manufacturing And Market Strategies, Ahmed M. Deif, Waguih H. Elmaraghy

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Increasing complexity and interdependency in manufacturing enterprises require an agile manufacturing paradigm. This paper considers a dynamic control approach for linking manufacturing strategy with market strategy through a reconfigurable manufacturing planning and control (MPC) system to support agility in this context. A comprehensive MPC model capable of adopting different MPC strategies through distributed controllers of inventory, capacity, and WIP is presented. A hierarchical supervisory controller (referred to as decision logic unit, DLU) that intakes the high-level strategic market decisions and constraints together with feedback of the current manufacturing system state (WIP, production, and inventory levels) and optimally manages the distributed …

Investigating Optimal Capacity Scalability Scheduling In A Reconfigurable Manufacturing System, Ahmed M. Deif, Waguih Elmaraghy

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Responsiveness to dynamic market changes in a cost-effective manner is becoming a key success factor for any manufacturing system in today’s global economy. Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs) have been introduced to react quickly and effectively to such competitive market demands through modular and scalable design of the manufacturing system on the system level, as well as on the machine components’ level. This paper investigates how RMSs can manage their capacity scalability on the system level in a cost-effective manner. An approach for modeling capacity scalability is proposed, which, unlike earlier approaches, does not assume that the capacity scalability is simply …

A Lean Approach To Manage A Capstone Senior Project Course, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The senior project course (IT461) in the Industrial Technology program at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) is a quarter long capstone course that complements the "learn-by-doing" educational approach at Cal Poly. A Control Approach To Explore The Dynamics Of Capacity Scalability In Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems, Ahmed M. Deif, Waguih H. Elmaraghy

Industrial Technology and Packaging

This paper presents a dynamic model and analysis for one of the major characteristics of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs) capacity scalability. The dynamic model is analyzed using its transfer function. Dynamic characteristics associated with the delay in capacity scalability and how to minimize this delay are discussed using control approaches. The problem of how to supply exact capacity in response to market changes is also examined by solving the dynamic problem of the production offset phenomenon in RMSs. The effect of work in process as a damping factor for production disturbances during capacity scalability is addressed. Finally, a general capacity …

Effect Of Time-Based Parameters On The Agility Of A Dynamic Mpc System, A. M. Deif, W. H. Elmaraghy

Industrial Technology and Packaging

This paper presents a dynamic manufacturing planning and control (MPC) system that can maintain agility through the ability to dynamically switch between different policies due to varying market strategies. The dynamic behavior of the developed system is investigated by studying the effect of the time based parameters on responsiveness and cost effectiveness of the system reflected in the natural frequency and the damping of its different configurations. Results showed that the agility requirements are directly affected by the time based parameters of the MPC system: production lead time, capacity scalability delay, and shipment time. This resulted in a better understanding …

RFID bridges many areas of manufacturing including inventory management, assembly operation, material handling, packaging and shipping by providing an accurate and …

A Simulation Analysis Of Factors Influencing The Flexibility Of Cellular Manufacturing, Manocher Djassemi May 2005

A Simulation Analysis Of Factors Influencing The Flexibility Of Cellular Manufacturing, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The performance of cellular manufacturing (CM) systems in a variable demand and flexible workforce environment has been examined using simulation modelling. Discrepancies between academicians and practitioners' findings with respect to flexibility and uneven machine utilization in CM systems are discussed. The views of two parties were incorporated in simulation models to rectify the existing discrepancies. While the results of this study confirm the previous findings of academicians regarding the deterioration of the performance of CM in a variable product mix situation, it appears that those results may be significantly influenced by considering a flexible workforce. The simulation results show that …

Package Performance Testing Of Dangerous Goods In High Altitude Shipments, S. Paul Singh, Gary J. Burgess, Jay A. Singh Mar 2003

Package Performance Testing Of Dangerous Goods In High Altitude Shipments, S. Paul Singh, Gary J. Burgess, Jay A. Singh

Industrial Technology and Packaging

This paper discusses the impact of high altitude shipments on package integrity. High altitude shipments are encountered when trucks travel over high mountain passes or when cargo and feeder aircraft transport packages in non-pressurized or partially-pressurized cargo holds. Both these types of transport methods will result in severe changes in pressure and temperature conditions as compared to packages being transported close to sea-level The testing of packages under these conditions is critical since package integrity may be compromised. The current shipping tests performed in test labs do not account for pressure changes and vibration together. This study showed that combination …

Determination Of A Flexibility Range For Cellular Manufacturing Systems Under Product Mix Variations, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

One of the underlying assumptions in cellular manufacturing is that product mix is relatively stable over time. In this paper, a procedure for the sensitivity analysis of the performance of a cellular manufacturing system with respect to changes in the product mix is presented and a flexibility range representing the capability of the system in dealing with these changes is determined using simulation modelling. The simulation results in this study show that as the changes in the product mix increase the superiority of the performance of the cellular manufacturing system to the corresponding job shop system diminishes.

The Threshold Value Of A Quality Index For Formation Of Cellular Manufacturing Systems, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The superiority of cellular manufacturing to job shop manufacturing has been questioned by a number of simulation studies. A simulation study will be conducted to demonstrate how the procedure can be used to determine the threshold value for QI beyond which the cellular …
