Modeling And Solution Approaches For Non-Traditional Network Flow Problems With Complicating Constraints, Negin Enayaty Ahangar

In this dissertation, we model three network-based optimization problems. Chapter 2 addresses the question of what the operation plan should be for interdependent infrastructure systems in resource-constrained environments so that they collectively operate at the highest level. We develop a network-based operation model of these systems that accounts for interdependencies among them. To solve this large-scale model, a solution approach is proposed that relatively quickly generates high-quality solutions to the problem.

Complex engineering projects (CEPs) such as electric transmission networks and transportation infrastructure are becoming increasingly important to the public in general and even more so to engineers. These projects are large-scale in terms of money and time and contain significant uncertainties over their life-cycle, with fluctuations in input and output costs. Due to these uncertainties, there are conditional opportunities (e.g., on prices) to make critical decisions such as investment in construction of power generation facilities or decommissioning of such facilities. This dissertation presented three logistics problems. The first problem is a parallel machine scheduling problems that considers multiple unique characteristics including release dates, due dates, limited machine availability and job splitting. The objective of is to minimize the total amount of time required to complete work. A mixed integer programming model is presented and a heuristic is developed for solving the problem. World’s Finest Chocolate (WFC) is currently hand stacking each case of chocolate coming off its production lines onto pallets. This is leading to strain and potential injuries on employee’s backs and hands, as well as improper stacking that leads to less than sturdy pallet loads. This can result in employee recovery time off and medical bills. Also may lead to poor quality of stacking causing warehouse and shipping damage. Other companies have decided to utilize automatic palletizers to alleviate this issue. This is the current plan of action we are researching and proposing.
