The Design And Engineering Of Mobile Data Services:Developing An Ontology Based On Business Model Thinking, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Guy Fitzgerald
The Design And Engineering Of Mobile Data Services:Developing An Ontology Based On Business Model Thinking, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Guy Fitzgerald
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
This paper addresses the design and engineering problem related to mobile data services. The aim of the research is to inform and advise mobile service design and engineering by looking at this issue from a rigorous and holistic perspective. To this aim, this paper develops an ontology based on business model thinking. The developed ontology identifies four primary dimensions in designing business models of mobile data services: value proposition, value network, value architecture, and value finance. Within these dimensions, 15 key design concepts are identified along with their interrelationships and rules in the telecommunication service business model domain and unambiguous …
The Design Of Innovative Mobile Artifacts: How To Develop Powerful Value Networks?, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Guy Fitzgerald
The Design Of Innovative Mobile Artifacts: How To Develop Powerful Value Networks?, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Guy Fitzgerald
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
The development of mobile data services and products calls for participation and collaboration amongst many actors with different expertise. However, building powerful value network is challenging and requires a detailed examination of a number of design constructs and their interrelationships. This research provides an intuitive model to help effectively design such networks. The model is illustrated using NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode case. It is argued that the model offers a useful methodical approach for telecoms providers to develop a thriving value network capable of creating significant mobile innovations and benefits.

Enhancing citizen participation in policy making using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is emerging as a strategic issue for political organisations. ICT-mediated participation, or eParticipation, projects range from the more traditional public sector initiatives, such as petitions and consultations, to attempts at integrating new forms of participatory Web 2.0 media. In this paper, we argue that the potential of ICTs to deliver sustainable eParticipation has not been fully achieved. This is mainly because of the lack of (1) effective coordination at the implementation level, (2) appropriate infrastructure, and (3) effective service design and development. In addressing this gap, we examine …

Ontoeng:A Design Method For Ontology Engineering In Information Systems, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Guy Fitzgerald
Ontoeng:A Design Method For Ontology Engineering In Information Systems, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Guy Fitzgerald
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
This paper addresses the design problem relating to ontology engineering in the discipline of information systems. Ontology engineering is a realm that covers issues related to ontology development and use throughout its life span. Nowadays, ontology as a new innovation promises to improve the design, semantic integration, and utilization of information systems. Ontologies are the backbone of knowledge-based systems. In addition, they establish sharable and reusable common understanding of specific domains amongst people, information systems, and software agents. Notwithstanding, the ontology engineering literature does not provide adequate guidance on how to build, evaluate, and maintain ontologies. On the basis of …
Leading Firms As Knowledge Gatekeepers In A Networked Environment, Deogratias Harorimana Mr
Leading Firms As Knowledge Gatekeepers In A Networked Environment, Deogratias Harorimana Mr
Dr Deogratias Harorimana
This chapter introduces the role of the knowledge gatekeeper as a mechanism by which knowledge is created and transferred in a networked environment. Knowledge creation and transfer are essential for building a knowledge based economy. The chapter considers obstacles that inhibit this process and argues that leading firms create a shared socio-cultural context that enables the condivision of tacit meanings and codification of knowledge. Leading firms act as gatekeepers of knowledge through the creation of shared virtual platforms. There will be a leading firm that connects several networks of clients and suppliers may not interact directly with one another, but …
Towards A Business Model For Cellular Network And Telecommunication Operators: A Theoretical Framework, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Ramzi El-Haddadeh, David Avison
Towards A Business Model For Cellular Network And Telecommunication Operators: A Theoretical Framework, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Ramzi El-Haddadeh, David Avison
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
Cellular networks and telecommunications bring major change to the way businesses are conducted. Mobility has become one of the main priorities for users and this has impacted on cellular networks and telecommunication operators (CNTOs). However, entrants into the cellular industry have been confounded primarily by inexistent or weak Business Models (BMs). Designing a BM for a CNTO is complex and requires multiple actors to balance different and often conflicting design requirements. Nevertheless, most research about CNTOs has been technically oriented and has mainly addressed the technological and engineering issues related to their infrastructure. Less attention has been given to the …

Defining The Business Model In The New World Of Digital Business, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Ramzi El-Haddadeh, David Avison
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
Recent rapid advances in ICTs, specifically in Internet and mobile technologies, have highlighted the rising importance of the Business Model (BM) in Information Systems (IS). Despite agreement on its importance to an organization’s success, the concept is still fuzzy and vague, and there is no consensus regarding its definition. Furthermore, understanding the BM domain by identifying its meaning, fundamental pillars, and its relevance to other business concepts is by no means complete. In this paper we aim to provide further clarification by first presenting a classification of definitions found in the IS literature; second, proposing guidelines on which to develop …

A Process Theory Of Competency Rallying In Engineering Projects, Bernhard R. Katzy, Kevin Crowston
A Process Theory Of Competency Rallying In Engineering Projects, Bernhard R. Katzy, Kevin Crowston

Firms face an environment changing at an increasingly rapid pace. Market opportunities in particular can arise and disappear in a short time. Unfortunately, the speed with which organizations can adapt their strategies and competencies to meet these opportunities remains limited. We argue that firms can address these individual limitations by cooperating with others for access to market opportunities and needed competencies. In this paper, we present a process theory of how a network of firms can reliably engineering and deliver products in the face of rapid market changes. In this theory, the success of the network is predicated on 1) …
Digital Rosetta Stone: A Conceptual Model For Maintaining Long-Term Access To Digital Documents, Steven B. Robertson
Digital Rosetta Stone: A Conceptual Model For Maintaining Long-Term Access To Digital Documents, Steven B. Robertson
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the rapid evolution of technology, future digital systems may not be able to read and/or interpret the digital recordings made by older systems, even if those recordings are still in good condition. This thesis addresses the problem of maintaining long-term access to digital documents and provides a methodology for overcoming access difficulties due to technological obsolescence. A review was conducted to determine the long-term access methods that have already been suggested by other researchers. These previously suggested methods are then combined with other ideas that were encountered and conceived while performing research for this project. The combination of …
