Enhancing Bridge Resilience And Overheight Vehicle Mitigation Through Innovative Sacrificial Cushion Systems, Aly Mousaad Aly, Marc Hoffmann

Faculty Publications

Transportation departments have made significant strides in addressing the challenges posed by the increasing weights of trucks on bridges. While there is a growing awareness of overheight vehicle collisions with bridges, implementing effective countermeasures remains limited. The susceptibility of bridges to damage from such collisions is on the rise, further exacerbated by unpredictable lateral impact forces. This study employs nonlinear impact analysis to assess the response of an unprotected vehicle-girder model, yielding realistic deformation outcomes comparable to observed impacts on the US-61 bridge. Predictions for a truck traveling at 112.65 km/h indicate deformations of 0.229 m, 0.161 m, and 0.271 …

Investigating The Effect Of Bead Geometry On Fiber Orientation And Thermomechanical Properties For Large-Format Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing, Joanna F. Keaton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In large-format extrusion-based additive manufacturing of polymer composites, the relationship between material properties and processing parameters requires further investigation. This thesis focuses on the relationship between fiber orientation and thermomechanical properties for short fiber-filled thermoplastic polymer systems manufactured by extrusion-based additive manufacturing. Fiber orientation is particularly important in determining the thermomechanical properties of the composite material as properties in the direction of deposition are expected to be higher for highly aligned fibers than randomly aligned fibers. Fiber orientation distribution, which is related to processing parameters and deposition conditions, can be efficiently represented by the orientation tensor. The orientation tensor can …

Performance Comparison Of Several Control Algorithms For Tracking Control Of Pantograph Mechanism, Laylaa Mahmoud Eng, Mohamed Shamseldin Dr, Mohamed Sallam Dr, Abdelghany Mohamed Prof

Future Engineering Journal

A sort of parallel manipulator known as a pantograph robot mechanism was created primarily for industrial requests that required high precision and satisfied speed. While tracking a chosen trajectory profile requires a powerful controller. Because it has four active robot links and one robot passive link in place of just two links like the open chain does, it can carry more loads than the open chain robot mechanism while maintaining accuracy and stability. The calculated model for a closed chain pantograph robot mechanism presented in this paper takes into account the boundary conditions. For the purpose of simulating the dynamics …

Dice Testing With The Running Chi-Square Distribution, Warren Campbell, Hunter Wimsatt Jul 2022

Dice Testing With The Running Chi-Square Distribution, Warren Campbell, Hunter Wimsatt

SEAS Faculty Publications

Dice are not fair. Producing a geometrically precise, uniform die is not possible. Casino dice come as close as possible to perfectly random dice because they are machined to an accuracy of a few ten-thousandths of an inch and the putty used for the pips (dots) is the same density as the plastic die body. Polyhedral dice used in games like Dungeons and Dragons are far more difficult to manufacture to high tolerances. Some dice are fairer than others. Since 20-sided dice (D20s) are very difficult to manufacture precisely, they were the focus of this study. The running chi-square distribution …

Accelerated Controller Tuning For Wind Turbines Under Multiple Hazards, Aly Mousaad Aly, Milad Rezaee Mar 2021

Accelerated Controller Tuning For Wind Turbines Under Multiple Hazards, Aly Mousaad Aly, Milad Rezaee

Faculty Publications

During their lifecycle, wind turbines can be subjected to multiple hazard loads, such as high-intensity wind, earthquake, wave, and mechanical unbalance. Excessive vibrations, due to these loads, can have detrimental effects on energy production, structural lifecycle, and the initial cost of wind turbines. Vibration control by various means, such as passive, active, and semi-active control systems provide crucial solutions to these issues. We developed a novel control theory that enables semi-active controller tuning under the complex structural behavior and inherent system nonlinearity. The proposed theory enables the evaluation of semi-active controllers’ performance of multi-degrees-of-freedom systems, without the need for time-consuming …

Novel Structural Health Monitoring And Damage Detection Approaches For Composite And Metallic Structures, Shervin Tashakori

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical durability of the structures should be continuously monitored during their operation. Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques are typically used for gathering the information which can be used for evaluating the current condition of a structure regarding the existence, location, and severity of the damage. Damage can occur in a structure after long-term operating under service loads or due to incidents. By detection of these defects at the early stages of their growth and nucleation, it would be possible to not only improve the safety of the structure but also reduce the operating costs. The main goal of this dissertation …
