Throttleable Gox/Abs Launch Assist Hybrid Rocket Motor For Small Scale Air Launch Platform, Zachary S. Spurrier
Throttleable Gox/Abs Launch Assist Hybrid Rocket Motor For Small Scale Air Launch Platform, Zachary S. Spurrier
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ability for an aircraft-based launch platform to place an orbital payload onto a nominal launch trajectory at a higher energy state -- altitude, velocity, flight path angle, and azimuth --using highly-efficient air breathing propulsion instead of a much lower-efficiency rocket system, offers the potential for a significantly smaller launch vehicle. An airborne platform also provides the ability to launch from multiple locations and allows for significantly increased "system responsiveness." The NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center’s Towed Glider Air-Launch System (TGALS) is a small-scale flight research project investigating the feasibility for a remotely-piloted, towed, glider system to act as a …
Improved Modeling Of Atmospheric Entry For Meteors With Nose Radii Between 5cm And 10m, Jakob Dale Brisby
Improved Modeling Of Atmospheric Entry For Meteors With Nose Radii Between 5cm And 10m, Jakob Dale Brisby
Masters Theses
Atmospheric entry studies typically look closely at the peak heating rate that a body encounters during its trajectory. This is an extremely important phenomenon to study because it allows engineers to determine if a trajectory is possible with given materials and craft design specifications. It also allows designers to choose what type of method will be used for mitigating the enormous heat fluxes during entry. In general, it is accepted that during the super-sonic flight regime the body will continue to be heated and an ablative heat shield often is used to deal with these heating processes. The theory outlined …

Investigating The Effect Of Capping Layers On Final Thin Film Morphology After A Dewetting Process, Benjamin C. White
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Nanoparticles on a substrate have numerous applications in nanotechnology, from enhancements to solar cell efficiency to improvements in carbon nanotube growth. Producing nanoparticles in a cheap fashion with some control over size and spacing is difficult to do, but desired. This work presents a novel method for altering the size and spacing of nickel and gold nanoparticles. Dewetting is a methodology to reduce thin films to an ensemble of discrete droplets. The introduction of alumina capping layers to thin nickel films during a pulsed laser-induced dewetting process has yielded reductions in the mean and standard deviation of radii and pitch …

Quadrotor Uav Path Following Using Trajectory Shaping, Parwinder Singh Mehrok
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The propose of this research is to develop a path following control law known as Trajectory Shaping. The approach is to develop a three- dimensional (3D) version of it from an existing two-dimensional (2D) model. Apart from research on this 3D control law, a multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform, having four rotors and known as quadrotor is designed from the ground up for validating the concept of path following. Several pre-defined paths like the circle and figure-eight trajectories are used to apply the newly developed version of this control law. The existing 2D concept of Trajectory Shaping guidance …
Path Following By A Quadrotor Using Virtual Target Pursuit Guidance, Abhishek Manjunath
Path Following By A Quadrotor Using Virtual Target Pursuit Guidance, Abhishek Manjunath
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Missile guidance laws have been solely developed to follow and intercept a target thereby destroying or damaging it. In this research, the primary objective is to modify and adopt a missile guidance law to be used on a quadrotor to follow a virtual target. The target is termed 'virtual' as it only exists mathematically in the form of equations. The goal is to have the quadrotor successfully following the predefined path (described by the target) while maintaining a fixed distance from the virtual target. To ensure viability and assess performance, a detailed comparison with another path following law is made.

A series of Large Eddy Simulations using an atmospheric meteorological cloud model have been used to investigate the important geometric and thermal parameters that influence a thunderstorm downburst outflow, as it pertains specifically to the idealized cooling source model. A separate set of Large Eddy Simulations make use of the same idealized cooling source model, in a realistic atmospheric base state using real field sounding data, in an attempt to make a quantifiable comparison to a downburst from a full cloud simulation. Randomness has been added to the cooling source forcing function to mimic the thermal variation in a real …
Preliminary Design Tools In Turbomachinery: Non-Uniformly Spaced Blade Rows, Multistage Interaction, Unsteady Radial Waves, And Propeller Horizontal-Axis Turbine Optimization, Yujun Leng
Open Access Dissertations
Turbomachinery flow fields are inherently unsteady and complex which makes the related CFD analyses computationally intensive. Physically based preliminary design tools are desirable for parametric studies early in the design stage, and to provide deep physical insight and a good starting point for the later CFD analyses. Four analytical/semi-analytical models are developed in this study: 1) a generalized flat plate cascade model for investigating the unsteady aerodynamics of a blade row with non-uniformly spaced blades; 2) a multistage interaction model for investigating rotor-stator interactions; 3) an analytical solution for quantifying the impeller wake convection and pressure wave propagating between a …

Experimental Investigation Of Turbulent Structures And Non-Equilibrium Effects In Axial Wake Vortices Via Particle Image Velocimetry, Jeffry William Ely
Experimental Investigation Of Turbulent Structures And Non-Equilibrium Effects In Axial Wake Vortices Via Particle Image Velocimetry, Jeffry William Ely
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Vortices are a common phenomenon in fluid flows that arise as kinetic energy dissipates into heat via viscous interaction. They arise naturally at large scales in the form of dust devils, tornadoes, and as a counter-rotating vortex pair in the wake of aircraft. It is important to understand the conditions leading to their formation, their duration, and their dissipation in order to forecast or prevent undesirable effects. Among these deleterious effects is a decrease in safety of aircraft operations in the wake of other aircraft, an extremely common situation at airports around the world. A large number of mathematical models …
A Hybrid Position Feedback Controller For Bistable Structures, Mehmet R. Simsek
A Hybrid Position Feedback Controller For Bistable Structures, Mehmet R. Simsek
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Bistability is the property of structures showing the ability to attain two statically stable states. Due to dynamic and static advantages such as no energy demand at stable positions and providing higher deflections compared to a monostable structure, bistability may be appealing in control surface design for aircraft structures and load alleviation for wind turbine blades. The dynamics of bistable structures is nonlinear because of the snap-through occurring during the cross-well oscillation between two stable states. A new control strategy called hybrid position feedback control is developed based on the conventional positive position control to exploit linear dynamics of bistable …

A Study On Flow Development In An Apu-Style Inlet And Its Effect On Centrifugal Compressor Performance, Fangyuan Lou
Open Access Dissertations
The objectives of this research were to investigate the flow development inside an APU-style inlet and its effect on centrifugal compressor performance. The motivation arises from the increased applications of gas turbine engines installed with APU-style inlets such as unmanned aerial vehicles, auxiliary power units, and helicopters. The inlet swirl distortion created from these complicated inlet systems has become a major performance and operability concern. To improve the integration between the APU-style inlet and gas turbine engines, better understanding of the flow field in the APU-style inlet and its effect on gas turbine is necessary.

Assessment Of Surface-Catalyzedreaction Products From Hightemperature Materials In Plasmas, Luke Daniel Allen
Assessment Of Surface-Catalyzedreaction Products From Hightemperature Materials In Plasmas, Luke Daniel Allen
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Current simulations of atmospheric entry into both Mars and Earth atmospheres for the design of thermal protections systems (TPS) typically invoke conservative assumptions regarding surface-catalyzed recombination and the amount of energy deposited on the surface. The need to invoke such assumptions derives in part from lack of adequate experimental data on gas-surface interactions at trajectory relevant conditions. Addressing this issue, the University of Vermont's Plasma Test and Diagnostics Laboratory has done extensive work to measure atomic specie consumption by measuring the concentration gradient over various material surfaces. This thesis extends this work by attempting to directly diagnose molecular species production …
Development Of An Additively Manufactured Microthruster For Nanosatellite Applications, Kevin Russell Gagne
Development Of An Additively Manufactured Microthruster For Nanosatellite Applications, Kevin Russell Gagne
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Next generation small satellites, also known as nanosatellites, have masses significantly lower than traditional satellites. Including the propellant mass, the total mass of a nanosatellite is often in the range of 1 to 4 $kg$. These satellites are being developed for numerous applications related to research, defense, and industry. Since their popularity began in the early 2000's, limitations on the downscaling of propulsion systems has proven to be problematic. Due to this, the vast majority of nanosatellite missions have limited lifespans of 90-120 days in low Earth orbit before they reenter the Earth's atmosphere. Although satellites on this scale have …

Temperature and velocity data from the combustor and nozzle were calculated using NASA CEA and Fluent. Magnitudes of temperature and velocity for CEA and Fluent matched within 9% and 4%, respectively. For the cooling system it is expected that cavitation will not occur since the saturation temperature of water is not …
Two-Dimensional Numerical Study Of Micronozzle Geometry, Jason M. Pearl
Two-Dimensional Numerical Study Of Micronozzle Geometry, Jason M. Pearl
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Supersonic micronozzles operate in the unique viscosupersonic flow regime, characterized by large Mach numbers (M>1) and low Reynolds numbers (Re<1000). Past research has primarily focused on the design and analysis of converging-diverging de Laval nozzles; however, plug (i.e. centerbody) designs also have some promising characteristics that might make them amenable to microscale operation. In this study, the effects of plug geometry on plug micronozzle performance are examined for the Reynolds number range Re = 80-640 using 2D Navier-Stokes-based simulations. Nozzle plugs are shortened to reduce viscous losses via three techniques: one - truncation, two - the use of parabolic contours, and three - a geometric process involving scaling. Shortened nozzle are derived from a full length geometry designed for optimal isentropic performance. Expansion ratio (ε = 3.19 and 6.22) and shortened plug length (%L = 10-100%) are varied for the full Reynolds number range. The performance of plug nozzles is then compared to that of linear-walled nozzles for equal pressure ratios, Reynolds numbers, and expansion ratios. Linear-walled nozzle half-angle is optimized to to ensure plug nozzles are compared against the best-case linear-walled design.
Results indicate that the full length plug nozzle delivers poor performance on the microscale, incurring excessive viscous losses. Plug performance is increased by shortening the nozzle plug, with the scaling technique providing the best performance. The benefit derived from reducing plug length depends upon the Reynolds number, with a 1-2% increase for high Reynolds numbers an up to 14% increase at the lowest Reynolds number examined. In comparison to Linear-walled nozzle, plug nozzles deliver superior performance when under-expanded, however, …

Cryogenic Processing Of Al 7050-T7451 Alloy For Improved Surface Integrity, Bo Huang
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
Al 7050-T7451 alloy with good combinations of strength, stress corrosion cracking resistance and toughness, is used broadly in the aerospace/aviation industry for fatigue-critical airframe structural components. However, it is also considered as a highly anisotropic alloy as the crack growth behavior along the short transverse direction is very different from the one in the long transverse direction, due to the inhomogeneous microstructure with the elongated grains distributed in the work material used in the sheet/plate applications. Further processes on these materials are needed to improve its mechanical and material properties and broaden its applications.
The material with ultra-fine or nano …

A Linear Matrix Inequality-Based Approach For The Computation Of Actuator Bandwidth Limits In Adaptive Control, Daniel Robert Wagner
Masters Theses
"Linear matrix inequalities and convex optimization techniques have become popular tools to solve nontrivial problems in the field of adaptive control. Specifically, the stability of adaptive control laws in the presence of actuator dynamics remains as an important open control problem. In this thesis, we present a linear matrix inequalities-based hedging approach and evaluate it for model reference adaptive control of an uncertain dynamical system in the presence of actuator dynamics. The ideal reference dynamics are modified such that the hedging approach allows the correct adaptation without being hindered by the presence of actuator dynamics. The hedging approach is first …
