Minimal And Symmetric Global Partition Polynomials For Reproducing Kernel Elements, Mario Jesus Juha Jan 2011

Minimal And Symmetric Global Partition Polynomials For Reproducing Kernel Elements, Mario Jesus Juha

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Reproducing Kernel Element Method is a numerical technique that combines finite element and meshless methods to construct shape functions of arbitrary order and continuity, yet retains the Kronecker-δ property. Central to constructing these shape functions is the construction of global partition polynomials on an element. This dissertation shows that asymmetric interpolations may arise due to such things as changes in the local to global node numbering and that may adversely affect the interpolation capability of the method. This issue arises due to the use in previous formulations of incomplete polynomials that are subsequently non-affine invariant. This dissertation lays out …

Physically Meaningful Harmonization Of Tire/Pavement Friction Measurement Devices, Madhura Priyanga Nishshanke Rajapakshe Jan 2011

Physically Meaningful Harmonization Of Tire/Pavement Friction Measurement Devices, Madhura Priyanga Nishshanke Rajapakshe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accurate characterization and evaluation of tire/pavement friction is critical in assuring runway and highway safety. Historically, Pavement Friction Measurement Devices (PFMDs) employing different measuring mechanisms have been used to evaluate tire/pavement friction. They yield significantly disparate friction coefficients under the same contact conditions. Currently, an empirically developed data harmonization method based on a reference device (Dynamic Friction Tester (DFT)) is used in an attempt to overcome the disparities between the measurements using various different PFMDs. However, this method, which has been standardized by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM E1960), has been criticized for its inconsistency by researchers …

Impact Of Combustion Phasing On Energy And Availability Distributions Of An Internal Combustion Engine, Shawn Nicholas Wildhaber Jan 2011

Impact Of Combustion Phasing On Energy And Availability Distributions Of An Internal Combustion Engine, Shawn Nicholas Wildhaber

Masters Theses

"High fuel efficiency has become an extremely desirable trait for internal combustion engines. This motivation has driven extensive research on methods to improve fuel efficiency on engines of various sizes. Many of these methods involve changes to the properties of the combustion process. One way to induce these property changes is through varying the phasing of combustion. Combustion phasing can be defined as the time in the engine cycle, specifically the compression and expansion strokes, where combustion occurs. A change in combustion phasing causes a change in combustion duration. The duration of combustion impacts how the energy and work potential …

Numerical Comparison Of Thermal And Kinetic Modification Of Hydrogen And Oxygen, John Benjamin Gaither Jan 2011

Numerical Comparison Of Thermal And Kinetic Modification Of Hydrogen And Oxygen, John Benjamin Gaither

Masters Theses

"This document describes a new modeling technique used to compare thermal and kinetic modification of hydrogen and oxygen gas. The thermal model uses an equilibrium thermodynamic analysis to determine the heat required for given mole fractions of molecular and dissociated products. A kinetic model is developed for a mono-energetic electron beam and a Maxwellian energy distribution. The kinetic model uses electron impact cross sections for excitation, dissociation, and ionization tabulated from available source data between 0-1000 eV. Cross sections are used to calculate forward reaction rates, electron penetration depths, and associated product concentrations for excited, dissociated, and ionized species. The …

Analysis And Modeling Of Depth-Of-Cut During End Milling Of Deposited Material, Haythem Gaja Jan 2011

Analysis And Modeling Of Depth-Of-Cut During End Milling Of Deposited Material, Haythem Gaja

Masters Theses

"This study addresses depth-of-cut detection and tool-workpiece engagement using an acoustic emission monitoring system during milling machining for a deposited material. Online detection of depth-of-cut presents many technical difficulties. Researchers have used various types of sensors and methods to assess the depth-of-cut and surface errors. Due to the strong correlation between acoustic emission and cutting depth during the depth end milling process, it is useful to forecast the depth-of-cut from the acoustic emission signal. This work used regression analysis to model and detect the depth-of-cut. The experiments were carried out on a Fadal vertical 5-Axis computer numerical control machine using …

Design And Development Of Manufacturing Methods For Manufacturing Of Pem Fuel Cell Mea's, Nikhil Pramod Kulkarni Jan 2011

Design And Development Of Manufacturing Methods For Manufacturing Of Pem Fuel Cell Mea's, Nikhil Pramod Kulkarni

Masters Theses

"This thesis focuses on design and manufacturing of Fuel cell components using Additive Manufacturing techniques and then in the later part on design and manufacturing of Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) which is a very important component in fuel cells. Additive manufacturing methods are fast and efficient manufacturing methods which are additive building up components layer by layer instead of conventional subtractive manufacturing techniques. This ensures low cost and faster manufacturing. Additive manufacturing is important for fuel cell component manufacturing since it is important in fuel cells to minimize wastage and reduce the cost. MEA is the basis of the cost …

Processing And Mechanical Characterization Of Polyurea Aerogels, Jared M. Loebs Jan 2011

Processing And Mechanical Characterization Of Polyurea Aerogels, Jared M. Loebs

Masters Theses

"The use of aerogels historically has been limited to extreme cases largely in part to the nature of their mechanical properties. Until recently many aerogels produced have been brittle and weak, though looking at their specific strength would suggest otherwise. This thesis outlines the processing and major mechanical properties of a relatively new type of aerogel, polyurea aerogel, that shows promise in a variety of fields including structures.

Processing polyurea aerogel begins with a liquid solution that solidifies to form a solid gel filled with liquid that is later removed by supercritical drying. Once dry, polyurea aerogels are difficult to …

Ultra-Abrupt Tapered Fiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Sensors, B. Li, J. Lan, W. Sumei, L. Zhou, Hai Xiao, Hai-Lung Tsai Jan 2011

Ultra-Abrupt Tapered Fiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Sensors, B. Li, J. Lan, W. Sumei, L. Zhou, Hai Xiao, Hai-Lung Tsai

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A fiber inline Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) consisting of ultra-abrupt fiber tapers was fabricated through a new fusion-splicing method. By fusion-splicing, the taper diameter-length ratio is around 1:1, which is much greater than those (1:10) made by stretching. The proposed fabrication method is very low cost, 1/20-1/50 of those of LPFG pair MZI sensors. The fabricated MZIs are applied to measure refractive index, temperature and rotation angle changes. The temperature sensitivity of the MZI at a length of 30 mm is 0.061 nm/°C from 30-350 °C. The proposed MZI is also used to measure rotation angles ranging from 0° to 0.55°; …

Computational Modeling And Analysis Of Heavy Fuel Feasibility In Direct Injection Spark Ignition Engine, Suniludaya Simha Moda Jan 2011

Computational Modeling And Analysis Of Heavy Fuel Feasibility In Direct Injection Spark Ignition Engine, Suniludaya Simha Moda

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Direct Injection spark ignition (DISI) technology is helpful for the present day engine to increase the fuel efficiency. Power output and the choice of fuel as the demand and scarcity for fossil fuels are increasing. As a new technology DISI engines are employed in some commercial cars like the Pontiac Solstice using gasoline fuel. The advantages of DISI engines like use of different fuels, reduced compression ratio, reduced injection pressure and reduced operating pressures in DISI engines has not been widely tested. As a new technology DISI engines lack experimental results and combustion co-relations that can be directly used as …

Niyama Based Taper Optimizations In Steel Alloy Castings, Daniel A. Gorsky Jan 2011

Niyama Based Taper Optimizations In Steel Alloy Castings, Daniel A. Gorsky

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In the casting process, regions of shrinkage porosity can be reduced or eliminated through the implementation of taper, or small angled additions of mass on the boundaries of the part design, before risers are placed on the casting. Taper supplements the effect of risers so that a smaller riser volume is necessary to make a casting sound. Typically, taper is determined for a casting by using industry guidelines that were developed for simple two-dimensional simplifications of a complex casting. There is no accepted method of defining taper directly on part geometry aside from using expert opinions to make final decisions …

Thermodynamic Approach To Fatigue Failure Analysis In Metals And Composite Materials, Mehdi Naderi Abadi Jan 2011

Thermodynamic Approach To Fatigue Failure Analysis In Metals And Composite Materials, Mehdi Naderi Abadi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Fatigue is a dissipative process and must obey the laws of thermodynamics. In general, it can be hypothesized that the degradation of machinery components is a consequence of irreversible thermodynamic processes that disorder a component, and that degradation is a time dependent phenomenon with increasing disorder. This suggests that entropy —a fundamental parameter in thermodynamics that characterizes disorder— offers a natural measure of component degradation. The majority of the existing methods for prediction of fatigue are limited to the study of a single fatigue mode, i.e., bending or torsion or tension-compression. Further, the variability in the duty cycle in a …

Development Of Energy Absorbing Laminated Fiberglass Composites Using Electrospun Glass Nanofibers, Evan Kimbro Jan 2011

Development Of Energy Absorbing Laminated Fiberglass Composites Using Electrospun Glass Nanofibers, Evan Kimbro

Dissertations

The ability to predict failure of composite laminates due to delaminations is critical because of its subsurface nature. Traditional strengthening methods such as stitching and Z-pinning, while improving interlaminar properties in woven composites, lead to a reduction of the in-plane properties. Electrospun non-woven sheets of nanofibrous mat applied at interfacial regions offer an option to traditional treatments. Applications where protrusion energy must be dissipated completely would benefit the most from the use of the electrospinning treatment. Examples are bullet proof vests and vehicle armor. Penetration of a projectile through a composite material may be avoided by creating more energy absorbent …

Framework For Cohesive Zone Model Based Multiscale Damage Evolution In A Fatigue Environment, Michael Andrew Thomas Jan 2011

Framework For Cohesive Zone Model Based Multiscale Damage Evolution In A Fatigue Environment, Michael Andrew Thomas

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this research is to develop a framework to track damage evolution in a structural model subjected to a fatigue environment. This framework incorporates a micromechanical approach of continuous damage modeling, where damage in a homogenized representative microstructure is introduced at the continuum scale through the material constitutive matrix. In this research, damage in the representative microstructure is simulated utilizing cohesive zone models (CZM) whose properties are a function of the magnitude of applied stresses and the resulting separation. In order to minimize the mesh dependence of the cohesive zone model an adaptive meshing technique is employed. A …

A Study On The Effects Of Coil Wedge During Rewinding Of Thin Gauge Metals, Jantzen L. Hinton Jan 2011

A Study On The Effects Of Coil Wedge During Rewinding Of Thin Gauge Metals, Jantzen L. Hinton

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

With the increase in demand for high quality thin gauge metals improvements to control systems that monitor strip characteristics must first be acquired. During the rewinding of sheet metal, little insight is known as to what stresses are attributed to the actual winding process, not simply those induced by the mill. When winding effects become too severe they will alter control system readings, prompting the need for a rapid model that can predict winding effects and filter them from current control systems. This research develops a new method to determine a 4th order Airy function that predicts the 2D stress …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this computational study is to investigate the optimum injection and spark parameters for the direct injection spark ignition (DISI) Wankel rotary engine using diesel fuel. Currently only port fuel injected gasoline rotary engines are available in the automotive industry. Compared to reciprocating type engines rotary engine is mechanically simple, less vibrate, have higher power to weight ratio and achieve better performance at high rpm. Due to the inherent low fuel efficiency of rotary engine and increasing gas prices, application of the rotary engine in conventional automobiles is decreasing. This project seeks to introduce DISI technology to …
