A New Set-Up To Measure The Viscoelastic Properties Of Porous Media Using A Specific Electrodynamic Transducer, Dauchez Nicolas, Olivier Doutres Ph.D., Jean-Michel Génevaux, Guy Lemarquand

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

A new method for measuring viscoelastic properties of sound absorbing materials is presented. This method is derived from the quasistatic method using a loudspeaker as actuator and sensor. Previous results carried out with a traditional electrodynamic loudspeaker were limited to 100 Hz because of transducer nonlinearities. In this paper, viscoelastic properties are determined up to 500 Hz due to the design of a specific loudspeaker devoid of the main nonlinearities.

Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy Of Pyridine Hydrogenation On Platinum Nanoparticles, Kaitlin M. Bratlie, Kyriakos Komvopoulos, Gabor A. Somorjai Aug 2008

Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy Of Pyridine Hydrogenation On Platinum Nanoparticles, Kaitlin M. Bratlie, Kyriakos Komvopoulos, Gabor A. Somorjai

Kaitlin M. Bratlie

Pyridine hydrogenation in the presence of a surface monolayer consisting of cubic Pt nanoparticles stabilized by tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) was investigated by sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy using total internal reflection (TIR) geometry. TIR-SFG spectra analysis revealed that a pyridinium cation (C5H5NH+) forms during pyridine hydrogenation on the Pt nanoparticle surface, and the NH group in the C5H5NH+ cation becomes more hydrogen bound with the increase of the temperature. In addition, the surface coverage of the cation decreases with the increase of the temperature. An important contribution of this study is the in situ identification of reaction intermediates adsorbed …

Morphologies And Kinetics Of A Dewetting Ultrathin Solid Film, Mikhail Khenner Jan 2008

Morphologies And Kinetics Of A Dewetting Ultrathin Solid Film, Mikhail Khenner

Mikhail Khenner

The surface evolution model based on geometric partial differential equation is used to numerically study the kinetics of dewetting and dynamic morphologies for the localized pinhole defect in the surface of the ultrathin solid film with the strongly anisotropic surface energy. Depending on parameters such as the initial depth and width of the pinole, the strength of the attractive substrate potential and the strength of the surface energy anisotropy, the pinhole may either extend to the substrate and thus rupture the film, or evolve to the quasiequilibrium shape while the rest of the film surface undergoes phase separation into a …

Enhanced Stability Of A Dewetting Thin Liquid Film In A Single-Frequency Vibration Field, Sergey Shklyaev, Mikhail Khenner, Alexei Alabuzhev Jan 2008

Enhanced Stability Of A Dewetting Thin Liquid Film In A Single-Frequency Vibration Field, Sergey Shklyaev, Mikhail Khenner, Alexei Alabuzhev

Mikhail Khenner

Dynamics of a thin dewetting liquid film on a vertically oscillating substrate is considered. We assume moderate vibration frequency and large (compared to the mean film thickness) vibration amplitude. Using the lubrication approximation and the averaging method, we formulate the coupled sets of equations governing the pulsatile and the averaged fluid flows in the film, and then derive the nonlinear amplitude equation for the averaged film thickness. We show that there exists a window in the frequency-amplitude domain where the parametric and shear-flow instabilities of the pulsatile flow do not emerge. As a consequence, in this window the averaged description …

Validity Of The One-Dimensional Limp Model For Porous Media, Olivier Doutres, Nicolas Dauchez, Jean-Michel Génevaux, Olivier Dazel Dec 2007

Validity Of The One-Dimensional Limp Model For Porous Media, Olivier Doutres, Nicolas Dauchez, Jean-Michel Génevaux, Olivier Dazel

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

A straightforward criterion for determining the validity of the limp model validity for porous materials is addressed here. The limp model is an “equivalent fluid” model which gives a better description of porous behavior than the well known “rigid frame” model. It is derived from the poroelastic Biot model, assuming that the frame has no bulk stiffness. A criterion is proposed for identifying the porous materials for which the limp model can be used. It relies on a new parameter, the Frame Stiffness Influence FSI, based on porous material properties. The critical values of FSI under which the limp model …
