Thermal And X-Ray Analysis On The Origin Of Double Melting Phenomena Of Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Films, Xiaoyun Ling Dec 2005

Thermal And X-Ray Analysis On The Origin Of Double Melting Phenomena Of Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Films, Xiaoyun Ling

Doctoral Dissertations

Thermal analysis is one of the most commonly used techniques to characterize the structure and properties of semicrystalline polymers. Unfortunately, the interpretation of thermal events is not always straightforward, but can be quite complicated. However, the complexity involved is often overlooked, leading to erroneous or, at least, questionable results and interpretations. In the present study we carry out an extensive investigation of the thermal behavior of poly(L-lactic acid), PLLA, films prepared under a wide range of crystallization conditions, including isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization from both the glassy state and the melt. The primary techniques used were differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), …

Friction And Adhesion In Rigid Surface Indentation Of Nitrile Rubber, Stephen Jerrams May 2005

Friction And Adhesion In Rigid Surface Indentation Of Nitrile Rubber, Stephen Jerrams

Articles

When a rigid body in the form of a plane strain indentor is forced into an elastomer, the asperities on the surface of the indentor are filled by the softer material. As depth of ingress increases, the rubber displaced into the indentor asperities exhibits stick-slip behaviour. The rubber adheres to the rigid body and if the depth of ingress is held at a maximum, the level of adhesion remains constant despite short-term load relaxation occurring in the rubber.

This text describes the influence of a range of factors on indentation forces and adhesion in rigid indentation of hydrogenated nitrile rubbers. …

Rare-Earth Iodides In Ionic Liquids:  The Crystal Structure Of [Set3]3[Lni6] (Ln = Nd, Sm), Anja V. Mudring, Arash Babai Jan 2005

Rare-Earth Iodides In Ionic Liquids:  The Crystal Structure Of [Set3]3[Lni6] (Ln = Nd, Sm), Anja V. Mudring, Arash Babai

Anja V. Mudring

Crystals of [SEt3]3[LnI6] (Ln = Nd, Sm) were obtained by the reaction of LnI2 with the ionic liquid [SEt3][Tf2N] [Tf2N = bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide]. The compounds are characterized by octahedral [LnI6]3- units that are surrounded by a distorted cube of triethylsulfonium cations.

Anhydrous Praseodymium Salts In The Ionic Liquid [Bmpyr][Tf2n]:  Structural And Optical Properties Of [Bmpyr]4[Pri6][Tf2n] And [Bmyr]2[Pr(Tf2n)5], Arash Babai, Anja V. Mudring Jan 2005

Anhydrous Praseodymium Salts In The Ionic Liquid [Bmpyr][Tf2n]:  Structural And Optical Properties Of [Bmpyr]4[Pri6][Tf2n] And [Bmyr]2[Pr(Tf2n)5], Arash Babai, Anja V. Mudring

Anja V. Mudring

Purposely designed ionic liquids can be excellent solvents for spectroscopic studies of rare earth compounds. Absorption and emission spectra of anhydrous PrI3 and Pr(Tf2N)3 in the ionic liquid 1,1-n-butyl-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, [bmpyr][Tf2N], at room temperature are presented together with the emission spectra of solid [bmpyr]2[Pr(Tf2N)5] and [bmpyr]4[PrI6][Tf2N]. After excitation into the 3P1 level, remarkable luminescence not only from the 1D2 level but also from the 3P0 and even from the 3P1 level is observed. Amazingly in the case of the solid compounds and even more astonishing for a solution of Pr(Tf2N)3 in [bmpyr][Tf2N] the strongest luminescence transitions start from the 3P0 …

Modeling And Simulation To Investigate Effects Of Static Mixer, Carrier Gas, Temperature And Pressure On The Mixing Ratio Of Carbon Nanotubes Growth Reactors, David Addie Noye Jan 2005

Modeling And Simulation To Investigate Effects Of Static Mixer, Carrier Gas, Temperature And Pressure On The Mixing Ratio Of Carbon Nanotubes Growth Reactors, David Addie Noye

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of this study was to investigate the effects of static mixer, carrier gas, carrier gas inlet pressures, and reactor operating temperatures on the mixing ratio of carbon nanotube synthesizing reactor. The methodology included design of static mixers, mathematical modeling, and computer modeling and simulation experiments.

The simulation experiment was performed based on single phase carrier gas modeling due to difficulty and time for three phase fluid modeling. First only nitrogen carrier gas in addition to the other three factors under constant inlet flow velocity and inlet temperature was simulated. Secondly, the same procedure was applied to argon carrier …

The ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of newly synthesized polymer systems have been studied. To date PVDF and its copolymers P(VDF-TrFE) have provided the bulk of the knowledge pertaining to ferroelectricity in polymers. Recently, ultrathin ferroelectric films of P(VDF-TrFE) 70:30 have been fabricated using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique [4]. In this study, various new polymers have been synthesized by chemically altering the PVDF structure. This alteration was performed in order to enhance the amphiphilic nature of the polymer and thus improve the LB film quality and control. Various chemical groups have been used to replace the electropositive hydrogen and electronegative fluorine found …
