Developing a reliable, simple, cost-efficient and eco-friendly method for scale-up production of high-quality graphene-based materials is essential for the broad applications of graphene. Up to now, various manufacturing methods have been employed for synthesizing high quality graphene, however aggregation and restacking has been a major issue and the majority of commercially available graphene products are actually graphite microplates. In this study, bipolar electrochemistry techniques have been used to exfoliate and deposit graphene nanosheets in a single-step process to enable high performance device application.

Changes in the biomechanical properties of cells accompanying the development of various pathological conditions have been increasingly reported as biomarkers for various diseases, including cancers. In cancer cells, the membrane properties have been altered compared to their healthy counterparts primarily due to proteomic and lipidomic dysregulations conferred by the underlying pathology. The separation and selective recovery of these cells or extracellular vesicles secreted from such cells is of high diagnostic and prognostic value.

Fundamental thermodynamic investigations have been carried out regarding the phase equilibria of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3±δ (LSM), a cathode of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), utilizing the CALculation of PHAse Diagram (CALPHAD) approach. The assessed thermodynamic databases developed for LSM perovskite in contact with YSZ fluorite and the other species have been discussed. The yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) system has been extensively studied because of its critical applications, like solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), oxygen sensors, and jet engines. However, there are still important questions that need to be answered and significant thermodynamic information that needs to be provided for this system. There is no predictive tool for the ionic conductivity of the cubic-YSZ (c-YSZ), as an electrolyte in SOFCs. The purpose of this thesis was to develop microscale fracture toughness tests to be performed in situ based off previously used macroscale fracture toughness tests. The thesis also was to use these tests to perform in situ analysis and imaging of reinforced adhesives during crack propagation. Two different fracture toughness tests were developed for this thesis through developing fixtures and sample geometry. A microscale double cantilever beam (DCB) test was developed for mode I fracture (opening mode). A microscale end notch flexure (ENF) test was developed for mode II fracture (sliding mode).

Lithium ion batteries (LIB) are one of the most commercially significant secondary batteries, but in order to continue improving the devices that rely on this form of energy storage, it is necessary to optimize their components. One common problem with anode materials that hinders their performance is volumetric expansion during cycling. The main goal of this thesis is to deposit metal particles on the surface of 2D nanoplatelets using a controlled cementation process. As a proof of concept, copper (Cu) and Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNP) were chosen as the representative metal and 2D nanoplatelets, respectively. Specific goals of this study include depositing nanometer scale Cu particles on the surface of GNP at a low concentration (approximately 5 vol.%) while maintaining clustering and impurities at a minimum. The objective of this research was to develop a novel technique for mechanical treatment to manipulate the microstructure of Nickel-Manganese-Gallium Hesuler alloys to increase anisotropy, which can lead to higher magnetocaloric properties. Ni2+xMn1-xGa intermetallics have the potential to be employed in magnetic refrigeration devices including residential refrigerators, heat pumps, and air conditioning. Solid-state magnetic refrigeration systems are smaller, quieter, and reduce energy consumption by 20% compared to existing conventional vapor-cycle refrigeration devices which rely on harmful hydro-fluorocarbon gases and pump millions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. AlNiCo magnets are known for high-temperature stability and superior corrosion resistance and have been widely used for various applications. Reported magnetic energy density ((BH) max) for these magnets is around 10 MGOe. Theoretical calculations show that ((BH) max) of 20 MGOe is achievable which will be helpful in covering the gap between AlNiCo and Rare-Earth Elements (REE) based magnets. Protective coatings is used to enhance the corrosion resistance of buried pipelines. However, the effectiveness of epoxy-coatings may be compromised due to inadvertent presence of surface damage and coating disbondment. Additionally, the disbonded coated panels is expected to be less effective than that of scratched or un-defected panels. This research was designed to evaluate the coating performance of FBE and hybrid epoxy in simulated Arabian Gulf water and synthetic Sabkha. The influence of coating damage and disbondment on corrosion resistance was also investigated.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of corrosion and fretting in 48 retrieved titanium-6aluminum-4vanadium and/or cobalt-chromium-molybdenum modular total hip prosthesis with respect to alloy material microstructure and design parameters. The results revealed vastly different performance results for the wide array of microstructures examined. Severe corrosion/fretting was seen in 100% of as-cast, 24% of low carbon wrought, 9% of high carbon wrought and 5% of solution heat treated cobalt-chrome. Severe corrosion/fretting was observed in 60% of Ti-6Al-4V components.
