A mathematical model that describes a variety of Bourdon tube geometries has been used for the three-dimensional analysis of Bourdon tubes. The variation of the stresses and tip deflections with respect to the variables used in the mathematical model are then presented as an aid in the design and analysis of the Bourdon tube. The finite element program represents a user-orientated package for calculation of tip deflections and stresses. Stresses and deflections are compared to both strain gage data and instrumented tip deflections as well as published data to establish the credibility of both the model and computer program. © …

A system of twelve equations have been developed for the elastic-plastic analysis of split-set roof bolts and these equations have been programmed for solution on the IBM 370/168 computer. Typical solutions have been presented in graphical form for comparison with experimental data. The results compare favorably for most of the split-sets providing the system parameters are properly specified. It appears that this analytical solution will be valuable to mining engineers since the solutions have been put in graphical form. The judicious use of roof bolts in stabilizing underground openings necessitates the ability to determine the state of stress in and around such bolts. A method of modeling a system of roof bolts is presented. This method is then applied in the determination of the state of stress due to bolt tightening. Two specific roof bolt configurations are considered: a fully grouted post-tensioned bolt and a post-tensioned bolt with grouted-end anchorage. A method utilizing high pressure fluid environments is described whereby a three-dimensional subsequent yield surface was determined for 304 stainless steel cylindrical parent specimens of this material were prestrained in axial compression under fluid pressure and then small sub specimens were sectioned from these parent specimens. Finite element techniques were used to optimize the parent specimen size so that a zone of uniform axial stress woidd result during the prestraining. Longitudinal strains in this zone were monitored during the prestraining and the subspecimens were cut from this region in a manner that did not allow the machining to appreciably affect …

Plates of 7075-T6 Aluminum have been folded along a major axis in pressure environments of atmospheric, 20,000 psi, and 40,000 psi. A finite element computer program is used to determine the stress state in the plates at various loads. Tension and compression tests conducted in pressure environments up to 70,000 psi were used to construct models using effective stress, effective strain, and pressure as parameters to predict the behavior of the material under various stress conditions. A prediction of the occurrence of fracture in the folded plate was possible using the computer results and the pressure dependent model. As better …

The finite-element technique has been applied in the analysis of a variety of pressure vessel problems. The example problems described in this paper suggest that the finite element method is perhaps the most suitable means currently available for obtaining quick and accurate solutions for real-life pressure vessel problems. Finite-element programs can be used by the practicing engineer. Companion programs are available that can be used to check the input data and graphically display both the input and output data. © 1972 by ASME.

An analysis based on linear theory is presented for determining the dynamic response and the conditions of resonance for a simply supported rectangular plate acted upon by two types of moving loads corresponding to: (1) a point force of variable magnitude oscillating about a fixed position on the plate, and (2) a point force of constant magnitude traveling in a circular orbit about a fixed position on the plate. This paper represents an analysis of the pressure distribution occurring in axially loaded cylindrical wafers with, and without, elastic radial constraints. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the resulting stress patterns that occur in short compression specimens frequently used in determining material properties, and in the opposed-anvil, or Bridgman-type, high-pressure cells. The influence of radial constraints, material strain hardening, wafer diameter-to-height ratio, anvil or plate deflection, and the wafer-anvil interface friction on the resulting stress distributions have been examined.
