Stress Analysis Of Silicon Carbide Microeletromechanical Systems Using Raman Spectroscopy, Stanley J. Ness
Stress Analysis Of Silicon Carbide Microeletromechanical Systems Using Raman Spectroscopy, Stanley J. Ness
Theses and Dissertations
During the fabrication of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), residual stress is often induced in the thin films that are deposited to create these systems. These stresses can cause the device to fail due to buckling, curling, or fracture. Government and industry are looking for ways to characterize the stress during the deposition of thin films in order to reduce or eliminate device failure. Micro-Raman spectroscopy has been successfully used to analyze poly-silicon MEMS devices made with the Multi-User MEMS Process (MUMPS trade name). Micro-Raman spectroscopy was selected because it is nondestructive, fast and has the potential for in situ stress monitoring. …

The Effect Of A Hard Coating On The Damping And Fatigue Life Of Titanium, Frank T. Ivancic
Theses and Dissertations
This project compares the damping and fatigue life of bare titanium plates to those coated with magnesium aluminate spinel (mag spinel). Two different coating thicknesses were tested: .005" per side and .010" per side (total thicknesses of .010" and .020"). Dynamic ping tests were conducted on all specimens to determine their resonance frequencies. Laser vibrometry was used to determine the mode at each resonance frequency. Damping ratios were determined through the use of sine sweeps. A vibration mode was selected at which to fatigue the specimens, and the stress pattern was analyzed utilizing the Stress Pattern Analysis by Thermal Emissions …

Journal of Electrochemistry
ZnO nanoparticle films were prepared on the Au film, PANI film and ITO by sol_gel method, and their morphological optical and photoelectrochemical properties were also studied. The results showed that the porous structure of PANI can suppress the aggregation of ZnO particles, resulting in the blue shift of on_set in the UV_Vis spectra and fluorescence spectra of ZnO_PANI composite film compared with that of ZnO_Au film. It was suggested that the ZnO_PANI composite film can be used in photoelectric coversion.

Magnetic Resonance Studies On Lithium Intercalation Into Carbons, Xiao-Rong Zhou, Zhen-Ming Du, Lin Zhuang, Jun-Tao Lu
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electron spin resonance(ESR) and 7Li_NMR magnetic resonance (7Li_NMR) studies on lithium intercalation into carbons were reviewed based on recently published papers, including those by the authors of this review. Two kinds of electronic spins were found in ESR studies. One corresponds to the charge carrier electrons and is called the Pauli spin. From the ESR intensity of Pauli spins, the curve of the density of electronic states can be deduced for the carbon material studied and, in turn, the contribution of the band model mechanism to the lithium intercalation can be calculated for the given carbon sample. The other …

Application Of Biphenyl Electroploymerization For Overcharge Protection In Li-Ion Batteries, Li-Fen Xiao, Xin-Ping Ai, Yu-Liang Cao, Han-Xi Yang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electropolymerization of biphenyl at overcharged positive electrode was investigated for overcharge protection of Li_ion batteries. Biphenyl in electrolyte as an additive can electrochemically polymerize at 4.5~4.75 V(vs. Li/Li+) to form a layer of conductive film on cathode surface. The surface film increases the internal resistance and the gases released during the electropolymerization also increases the internal pressure of the batteries, which therefore enhance the sensitivities of the electrical disconnecting devices. During prolonged overcharge, the growth of the conductive polymer film can create short circuit between the positive and negative electrodes and cause self_discharge of the batteries to a safer …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Cadmium p_toluenesulfonate was synthesized and tested electrochemically for the first time. This salt can lose all the hydrated water easily and the dehydrated salt do not deliquesce in the air.Hence, the cadmium p_toluenesulfonate is suitable for the electrochemical studies in organic solvents. When the Cd(Ⅱ) reduced on Pt electrode in Cd(pCH3C6H4SO3)2+TBAP+DMSO, underpotential deposition of cadmium occurred at first, and then cadmium deposited. 4_Methyl_7_hydroxylcoumarin and 3_aminocoumarin coordinate with Cd(Ⅱ) respectively, as a result the reductive potentials of Cd(Ⅱ) moved to the negative direction.

Behaviors Of Fe-Cr Alloys During Cavitation Damage, Xia Bai, Dong-Bai Sun, Hong-Ying Yu, Hui-Ming Meng, Hui-Qin Li, Zi-Shuang Fan
Journal of Electrochemistry
The influence of the surface galvanic effect on the behaviors of three Fe_Cr alloys during cavitation damage in NaCl solutions have been investigated. The results showed that the galvanic effect caused by the inhomogeneity between the undamaged surface of the alloy and the damaged one will be enhanced by the area ratio of the undamaged and the damaged. The behaviors of alloys during cavitation are closely related to both their mechanical performance and anti_corrosion capabilities.

Study Of Electrochemical Lithium Intercalation Performance Of Ni_(0.67)Mg_(0.33)O, Zhen-Cai Huang, Mao-Hui Chen, Guo-Tao Wu, Jin-Kua You, Zu-Geng Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
In the present work, Ni0.67Mg0.33O and NiO were produced by sol_gel method, and characterized by XRD, a rietveld refinement and the discharge/charge test.It was found that the magnesium_doping restrained the reduction of Ni and decreased the reversible capacity for the sample of Ni0.67Mg0.33O. But the formation of the solid solution after the magnesium_doping facilitated the high dispersion of NiO, and accordingly improved the electrochemical performance.

Leaching Of Copper(I) Sulphide By Sulphuric Acid Solution With Addition Of Sodium Nitrate, Zeljko J. Kamberovic
Zeljko J Kamberovic
Finely grained samples of copper(I) sulphide were leached by H2SO4 solution with added NaNO3. The occurrence probability of chemical reactions was analysed based on literature data and products which were formed during the process and the overall leaching reaction was defined. The effect of temperature, concentration of NaNO3 and H2SO4, stirring speed, phase ratio and time, on the leaching degree of copper was studied. The quantity of copper dissolved increases with growth of the values of all the parameters. Kinetic analysis shows that the leaching mechanism is very complex. By using appropriate mathematical kinetic models, it is found that the …

A set of GaAs1-xNx samples with small nitrogen composition (x<1%) were investigated by continuous-wave photoluminescence (PL), pulse-wave excitation PL, and time-resolved PL. In the PL spectra, an extra transition located at the higher-energy side of the commonly reported N-related emissions was observed. By measuring the PL dependence on temperature and excitation power, the PL peak was identified as a transition of alloy band edge-related recombination in GaAsN. The PL dynamics further confirms its intrinsic nature as being associated with the band edge rather than N-related bound states.

Study Of A Growth Instability Of Γ-In[Sub 2]Se[Sub 3], C. Amory, J. C. Bernede, S. Marsillac
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
γ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3] thin film are deposited for various substrate temperatures in the range of 523–673 K. This study shows that at 573 and 673 K the thin films are well crystallized with grains aligned along the c axis. Between these temperatures, a domain of instability appears where the γ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3] thin films have a randomly orientation and the c-lattice parameter increases. The presence of the metastable phase κ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3], during the growth, can explain the existence of this domain of instability. The insertion of Zn during the preparation process allows us to stabilize the phase κ at …
