The packaging sector is one of the massive traditional fields in the printing industry. The rapid developments in technology and environmental regulations have been affecting the expectations from packaging. User demands and the concerns to protect the environment are the two main factors that now demanding change in material properties. The choice used to depend on the physical and chemical requirements of the products, although today’s global mind set on the concepts such as biodegradability, recyclability, reusability, sustainability and carbon footprint reduction are becoming the reason to tailor packaging properties. In general, the choices have been switching from petroleum to …

Experimental Tests And Numerical Simulations For Failure Investigation On Corrugated Boxes Used On Household Appliance Packaging, Diego Fernandes Rodrigues, José Carlos Pereira Sep 2018

Experimental Tests And Numerical Simulations For Failure Investigation On Corrugated Boxes Used On Household Appliance Packaging, Diego Fernandes Rodrigues, José Carlos Pereira

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Packages made of corrugated paper are fundamental to the protection, transportation and handling of the appliance product market. During the storage and sales stages of a product, the package must resist compressive loads in different directions beyond moderate impacts. In this context, the objective of this work is to develop and implement a post-processor that allows the simultaneous analysis of two of the most common failure modes of packages made of corrugated paper: failure due to tensile or compressive stress limit, and failure due to local buckling, when the buckling of the faces of the corrugated paper between two peaks …

Microanalysis Of Polymer Chain Diffusion In Heat Seals, Russell Cooper Dec 2014

Microanalysis Of Polymer Chain Diffusion In Heat Seals, Russell Cooper

All Theses

Heat sealing is an integral method for the closure and protection of packaging. Previous work has shown that seal strength is developed by the interdiffusion of polymer chains within heat seals. Heat seals were made between two dissimilar materials. Poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) was heat sealed to ionomer. Diffusion within the EAA-ionomer heat seals was estimated. The diffusion estimates were then related to resulting seal strength in the EAA-ionomer sealant system. Heated tooling sealing was utilized to make heat seals at 40 psi (275.79 kPa), 0.5 seconds, and a range of temperatures between 180˚F (82.22˚C) and 300˚F (148.89˚C). Scanning electron microscopy …

Forest Products Laboratory: Supporting The Nation's Armed Forces With Valuable Wood Research For 90 Years, Christopher D. Risbrudt, Robert J. Ross, Julie J. Blankenburg, Charles A. Nelson Jan 2007

Forest Products Laboratory: Supporting The Nation's Armed Forces With Valuable Wood Research For 90 Years, Christopher D. Risbrudt, Robert J. Ross, Julie J. Blankenburg, Charles A. Nelson

Founded in 1910 by the U.S. Forest Service to serve as a centralized, national wood research laboratory, the USDA Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) has a long history of providing technical services to other government agencies, including those within the Department of Defense (DoD). A recent search of FPL’s library and correspondence files revealed that approximately 10,000 articles, reports, manuals, other technical publications, and communications have been generated and provided to the DoD since 1910. FPL has provided support on a broad array of technical questions—from designporting materiel to Europe and the South Pacific during World War II to assisting in …
