Real Time Audio Processing Using A Low-Power Digital Signal Processor, Aaron Norlinger May 2022

Real Time Audio Processing Using A Low-Power Digital Signal Processor, Aaron Norlinger

Honors Theses

This project focused on the creation of a series of audio processing functions that could run in real time on the ezDSP5502 processor. The Digital Signal Processor (DSP) being used for this project is an industry standard for lowpower signal processing applications. The overall goal was to have a code base that could sample audio in real time from any source, filter it in a variety of ways, run a Fast Fourier Transform on the audio, display the resulting frequency data to an LCD screen, and then output the filtered audio to an external speaker. This general process is used …

Speaker Diarization And Identification From Single-Channel Classroom Audio Recording Using Virtual Microphones, Antonio Gomez May 2022

Speaker Diarization And Identification From Single-Channel Classroom Audio Recording Using Virtual Microphones, Antonio Gomez

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Speaker identification in noisy audio recordings, specifically those from collaborative learning environments, can be extremely challenging. There is a need to identify individual students talking in small groups from other students talking at the same time. To solve the problem, we assume the use of a single microphone per student group without any access to previous large datasets for training.

This dissertation proposes a method of speaker identification using cross-correlation patterns associated to an array of virtual microphones, centered around the physical microphone. The virtual microphones are simulated by using approximate speaker geometry observed from a video recording. The patterns …

Detecting Suicide Risk From Wristworn Activity Tracker Data Using Machine Learning Approaches, Pallavi Atluri Apr 2018

Detecting Suicide Risk From Wristworn Activity Tracker Data Using Machine Learning Approaches, Pallavi Atluri

Electrical Engineering Theses

Suicide is a prevalent cause of death worldwide and depression is a primary concern of many suicidal acts. It is possible that an individual during depression never has any suicidal thoughts at all. On the other hand, some individuals in stable condition with no apparent symptoms of depression feel urges to commit suicide (suicidal ideation). Many such individuals never let anyone know what they are feeling or planning. Suicidal ideation considered an important precursor to suicidal acts.

Detecting the suicide risk in individuals with mood disorders is a major challenge. The current clinical practice to assess suicide risk in these …

Psychophysiological Analysis Of A Pedagogical Agent And Robotic Peer For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorders., Mohammad Nasser Saadatzi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by ongoing problems in social interaction and communication, and engagement in repetitive behaviors. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 1 in 68 children in the United States has ASD. Mounting evidence shows that many of these individuals display an interest in social interaction with computers and robots and, in general, feel comfortable spending time in such environments. It is known that the subtlety and unpredictability of people’s social behavior are intimidating and confusing for many individuals with ASD. Computerized learning environments and robots, however, prepare a predictable, …

Conversion Of Digital Circuits Labs, Caleb N. Taber May 2016

Conversion Of Digital Circuits Labs, Caleb N. Taber

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The engineering technology department at ETSU currently lacks a modern method to teach digital circuits. The aim of this thesis is to convert our current digital circuits labs to equivalent labs suited to run on the Basys 3. The Basys has several advantages over the aging NI Elvis boards (and now just breadboards) currently in use. The first advantage is that the Basys gives students a taste of FPGA programming without being overwhelmingly; like the systems currently in place for the digital signal processing class. The Basys is also a more modern system; our current integrated circuit and breadboard system …

Generally, reliable speech recognition is a hard problem that required a combination solution of many techniques. Thus, the combinations of Al-Quran with speech recognition system is quite challenging task to be implemented. It is because the Quran sound, which had been recited by most of reciters will probably tend to differ a lot from one person to another. Although those Quranic sentences were particularly taken from the same verse, but the way of the sentence in Al-Quran been recited or delivered may be different, depend on reciters with the different levels of understanding of Tajweed rules. This paper seeks to …

In the process of learning al-Quran, reciters are required to learn al-Quran through the manual method of Quran reading skills of talaqqi and musyafahah method. These methods are described as face to face learning process between students and teachers (Mudarris), where listening, correction of al-Quran recitation and repetition of the correct al-Quran recitation takes place. The reason behind this method is to allow Mudarris to check the Tajweed rules of the Quran recitation in real time. However, the current methods of Quran recitation are believed become unattractive and less effective to be implemented, especially for j-QAF students. Focus on j-QAF …

The Social Construction Of Authorship: An Investigation Of Subjectivity And Rhetorical Authority In The College Writing Classroom, Johannah Rodgers Feb 2007

The Social Construction Of Authorship: An Investigation Of Subjectivity And Rhetorical Authority In The College Writing Classroom, Johannah Rodgers

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Although we use the term author on a daily basis to refer to certain individuals, bodies of work, and systems of ideas, as Michel Foucault and other critics have pointed out, attempting to answer the question “What is an Author?” is by no means a simple proposition. And, starting from the position that there is no single, or definitive answer to this complex question, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the ongoing discussion of the genealogy of authorship by investigating the ways in which conceptions of the author have informed models of the writing subject in the field of rhetoric …

ACUTA: Other Publications

In December 2004 ACUTA and WTC sent a survey to 768 ACUTA primary members to determine what issues were important on campuses today and what issues respondents felt will be of importance in the next few years. Questions related to management, strategy, infrastructure, technology, organization, polity, and funding. One of the most interesting observations is that the current and five-year rankings are nearly identical- today's concerns are also your concerns for the future. Here are the highlights of our findings:

A cluster of five management issues were rated very close to the same importance. This cluster included developing a vision …
