A Nano-Drone Safety Architecture, Connor J. Sexton Jun 2022

A Nano-Drone Safety Architecture, Connor J. Sexton

Master's Theses

As small-form factor drones grow more intelligent, they increasingly require more sophisticated capabilities to record sensor data and system state, ensuring safe and improved operation. Already regulations for black boxes, electronic data recorders (EDRs), for determining liabilities and improving the safety of large-form factor autonomous vehicles are becoming established. Conventional techniques use hardened memory storage units that conserve all sensor (visual) and system operational state; and N-way redundant models for detecting uncertainty in system operation. For small-form factor drones, which are highly limited by weight, power, and computational resources, these techniques become increasingly prohibitive. In this paper, we propose a …

Inter-Slice Compression And Reconstruction Of Glioma Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Mri) Data Using Encoder-Decoder Neural Networks, Gavin Michael Karr Jul 2020

Inter-Slice Compression And Reconstruction Of Glioma Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Mri) Data Using Encoder-Decoder Neural Networks, Gavin Michael Karr

Graduate Theses - Electrical and Computer Engineering

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans of patients with brain tumors are an important source of pre-surgical medical information. These three-dimensional image volumes can be represented as a stack of two-dimensional image slices. The objective of this thesis is to compress the size of these image volumes by removing the odd-numbered slices and reconstruct the image volume using an encoder-decoder convolutional neural network. This neural network architecture is based on a modified form of the U-net segmentation network, which has been adjusted to allow for multiple image inputs and to support a network capable of generating new image slices. A novel …

Slow Complexity Wavelet Packet Compression Of Bayer Images For Communication Over Wireless Sensor Networks, Ivan Calzada Jan 2010

Slow Complexity Wavelet Packet Compression Of Bayer Images For Communication Over Wireless Sensor Networks, Ivan Calzada

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to develop a low complexity image compression algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The main constraints in a WSN node are limited processing power, memory allocation, and battery life. The goal of this thesis was to develop an image compression algorithm that would thrive under this constraint environment. The main focus was to minimize the complexity of the algorithm by taking advantage of the spatial correlation found in Bayer images. The algorithm employs line based 1-D Discrete Wavelet Packets Transform of Bayer images. In addition the image compression method includes the application of a …

Joint Source Channel Coding For Progressive Image Transmission, Minyi Zhao May 2001

Joint Source Channel Coding For Progressive Image Transmission, Minyi Zhao

Dissertations

Recent wavelet-based image compression algorithms achieve best ever performances with fully embedded bit streams. However, those embedded bit streams are very sensitive to channel noise and protections from channel coding are necessary. Typical error correcting capability of channel codes varies according to different channel conditions. Thus, separate design leads to performance degradation relative to what could be achieved through joint design. In joint source-channel coding schemes, the choice of source coding parameters may vary over time and channel conditions. In this research, we proposed a general approach for the evaluation of such joint source-channel coding scheme. Instead of using the …
