A Novel Optical Flow-Based Representation For Temporal Video Segmentation, Samet Akpinar, Ferdanur Alpaslan Jan 2017

A Novel Optical Flow-Based Representation For Temporal Video Segmentation, Samet Akpinar, Ferdanur Alpaslan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Temporal video segmentation is a field of multimedia research enabling us to temporally split video data into semantically coherent scenes. In order to develop methods challenging temporal video segmentation, detecting scene boundaries is one of the more widely used approaches. As a result, representation of temporal information becomes important. We propose a new temporal video segment representation to formalize video scenes as a sequence of temporal motion change information. The idea here is that some sort of change in the optical flow character determines motion change and cuts between consecutive scenes. The problem is eventually reduced to an optical flow-based …

New Approach To Design A Compact Triband Bandpass Filter Using A Multilayer Structure, Sohrab Majidifar, Mohsen Hayati

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a triband bandpass filter is presented using a dual-layer structure. Three H-shaped resonators are utilized in the proposed structure. The first and third resonators are placed at the top and bottom layers, respectively. The second resonator is divided into two parts: one half is on the top and the other half is at the bottom. The effective permittivity at the first and second layers is different, resulting in different resonant frequencies. The fabricated triband bandpass filter operates at 5.44/6.98/8.36 GHz, with fractional bandwidths of 6.6% 6% 2.9% and measured minimal insertion losses of 1.9/1.7/2 dB.

Broadband High Power Stripline Compact Multisection Coupled-Line Coupler For Vhf And Uhf Applications, Mehdi Taherkhani, Arash Ahmadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a broadband stripline multisection coupled-line coupler is designed and fabricated. The coupler has 50 dB coupling in the frequency range of 30 to 1000 MHz. The coupler is designed by cascading several unit section couplers consisting of two unequal length coupled line sections connected by different length uncoupled transmission lines. The unequal length coupled line sections with different coupling coefficients introduce a degree of freedom for bandwidth improvement and can help to reduce the overall dimensions of the multisection coupler. A lumped-element compensating circuit is used in series with the coupling port of the coupler to flatten …

Multiresponse Optimization To Improve The Torque Behavior Of An Outer-Rotor Permanent-Magnet Machine Using Gray Relational Analysis Based On The Taguchi Method, Yusuf Özoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The torque behavior of an outer-rotor surface-mounted permanent-magnet machine is improved by identifying seven pertinent design variables, including rotor height. The optimal design variables are revealed by analyzing 18 experiments determined by the Taguchi method for the minimum torque ripple, minimum total harmonic distortion of the induced voltage, and maximum average torque. In addition, the optimal design variables are obtained very quickly by using gray relational analysis based on the Taguchi method with the single response of the gray relational grade instead of multiple responses. A considerable amount of multiresponse improvement is achieved according to the results of the two …

Designing A Regulatory Framework For Efficient Integration Of Distributed Generation Technologies, Mohammad Jooshaki, Ali Abbaspour, Mahmud Fotuhi Firuzabad, Moein Moeini-Aghtaie

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper focuses on the designing procedure of a regulatory framework in distribution networks with the main goal being to facilitate the integration of distributed generation (DG) units. The proposed framework is based on the concept of the reward penalty scheme (RPS) and creates effective financial incentives for distribution companies (DISCOs) in improving the quality of their services by applying DG units. To achieve this goal, reliability indices and annual energy losses of a distribution network are considered as two significant measures used in designing the structure of several RPSs. Employing these schemes, the regulators can quantify the quality of …

Led Printers And Safe Fonts As Effective Protection Against The Formation Of Unwanted Emission, Ireneusz Kubiak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Due to the widespread use of computer equipment, electromagnetic protection of processed data is still an issue. Structurally modified commercial equipment is used to protect devices against this phenomenon. The acquisition costs of such modified devices are enormous. However, the market offers information devices with very low susceptibility to electromagnetic infiltration. Safe fonts are a new solution in the protection of sensitive information against electromagnetic infiltration processes. The use of safe fonts not only increases resistance to electromagnetic eavesdropping but also makes it impossible. These devices are computer printers that use a slat with hundreds of LEDs arranged in several …

Cavitation Detection In Centrifugal Pumps Using Pressure Time-Domain Features, Pouya Samanipour, Javad Poshtan, Hamed Sadeghi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Condition monitoring of centrifugal pumps is vital due to their crucial role in industries. One of the most prevalent faults in pumps is cavitation, which can cause mechanical faults or even failure in the pump. In this paper, an approach is suggested to detect cavitation in a centrifugal pump using time-domain analysis of the pressure signal residual. First, pressure and torque signals are obtained using a model of the electro-pump, and then pressure deviation from the pump performance curve is defined as a residual. The residual time-domain features are extracted and applied as inputs to a self-organizing map (SOM) neural …

Power Oscillation Damping Control By Pss And Dfig Wind Turbine Under Multiple Operating Conditions, Korakot Thanpisit, Issarachai Ngamroo

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Multiple operating conditions in power systems including wind power sources significantly affect the damping of low frequency oscillation modes due to diverse generating and loading conditions, random wind speeds, line outage contingencies, etc. To cope with multiple operating conditions, this paper proposes the new parameter optimization technique of the power system stabilizer (PSS) and the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine with the power oscillation damper (POD) based on the probability method. Different operating conditions are randomly generated by Monte Carlo simulation. Under the generated operating points, the particle swarm optimization of PSS and POD parameters is carried out to …

A Simple Approach To Extract The Unknown Parameters Of Pv Modules, Ahmed Hussein Jan 2017

A Simple Approach To Extract The Unknown Parameters Of Pv Modules, Ahmed Hussein

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A simple and accurate technique to compute essential parameters needed for electrical characterization of photovoltaic (PV) modules is proposed. A single-diode model of PV modules, including those with series and shunt resistances, is considered accurate and simple. However, PV module datasheets provided by manufacturers provide current-voltage ($I$-$V)$ characteristics as well as the values of selected parameters at standard test conditions (STC), i.e. solar radiation of 1000 W/m$^{2}$, air temperature of 25 $^{\circ}$C, and air mass AM = 1.5. Consequently, important parameters such as series resistance ($R_{s})$, shunt resistance ($R_{sh})$, photocurrent ($I_{ph})$, and diode reverse-saturation current ($I_{o})$ are not provided by …

A Novel And Realistic Hybrid Downlink-Uplink Coupled/Decoupled Access Scheme For 5g Hetnets, Nadeem Sial, Junaid Ahmed Jan 2017

A Novel And Realistic Hybrid Downlink-Uplink Coupled/Decoupled Access Scheme For 5g Hetnets, Nadeem Sial, Junaid Ahmed

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Cell association in present day heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is still based on the technique used by homogeneous cellular networks despite power and coverage area disparities of network nodes. In ongoing policy, both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) associations are coupled based on DL characteristics, which introduces UL-DL asymmetry and cell load imbalances. Recently, decoupled cell association, also known as downlink-uplink decoupling (DUDe), has been introduced in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 12 to improve uplink performance, load balancing, and cell capacity. In DUDe, characteristics of both DL and UL channels can be considered. By using this concept, various theoretical …

Data Clustering Using Seed Disperser Ant Algorithm, Wen Liang Chang, Jeevan Kanesan, Anand Jayant Kulkarni, Harikrishnan Ramiah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Nature-inspired optimization algorithms have become popular in the past decade. They have been applied to solve various kinds of problems. Among these would be data clustering, which has become popular in data mining in recent times due to the data explosion. In the last decade, many metaheuristic algorithms have been used to obtain improved data clustering optimization for solving data mining problems. In this paper, we applied the seed disperser ant algorithm (SDAA), which mimics the evolution of an Aphaenogaster senilis ant colony, and we introduced a modified SDAA that is a hybrid of K-means and SDAA for solving data …

An Adaptive Clustering Segmentation Algorithm Based On Fcm, Jun Yang, Yun-Sheng Ke, Mao-Zheng Wang Jan 2017

An Adaptive Clustering Segmentation Algorithm Based On Fcm, Jun Yang, Yun-Sheng Ke, Mao-Zheng Wang

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The cluster number and the initial clustering centers must be reasonably set before the analysis of clustering in most cases. Traditional clustering segmentation algorithms have many shortcomings, such as high reliance on the specially established initial clustering center, tendency to fall into the local maximum point, and poor performance with multithreshold values. To overcome these defects, an adaptive fuzzy C-means segmentation algorithm based on a histogram (AFCMH), which synthesizes both main peaks of the histogram and optimized Otsu criterion, is proposed. First, the main peaks of the histogram are chosen by operations like histogram smoothing, merging of adjacent peaks, and …

Proving Non-Deterministic Computations In Agda, Sergio Antoy, Michael Hanus, Steven Libby Jan 2017

Proving Non-Deterministic Computations In Agda, Sergio Antoy, Michael Hanus, Steven Libby

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate proving properties of Curry programs using Agda. First, we address the functional correctness of Curry functions that, apart from some syntactic and semantic differences, are in the intersection of the two languages. Second, we use Agda to model non-deterministic functions with two distinct and competitive approaches incorporating the non-determinism. The first approach eliminates non-determinism by considering the set of all non-deterministic values produced by an application. The second approach encodes every non-deterministic choice that the application could perform. We consider our initial experiment a success. Although proving properties of programs is a notoriously difficult task, the functional logic …

Clustering Opportunistic Ant-Based Routing Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Xinlu Li, Brian Keegan, Fredrick Mtenzi

Conference papers

The wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have a wide range of applications in many ereas, including many kinds of uses such as environmental monitoring and chemical detection. Due to the restriction of energy supply, the improvement of routing performance is the major motivation in WSNs. We present a Clustering Opportunistic Ant-based Routing protocol (COAR), which comprises the following main contributions to achieve high energy efficient and well load-balance: (i) in the clustering algorithm, we caculate the theoretical value of energy dissipation, which will make the number of clusters fluctuate around the expected value, (ii) define novel heuristic function and pheromone update …

Omni-Directional Infrared 3d Reconstruction And Tracking Of Human Targets, Emrah Benli Jan 2017

Omni-Directional Infrared 3d Reconstruction And Tracking Of Human Targets, Emrah Benli

Theses and Dissertations

Omni-directional (O-D) infrared (IR) vision is an effective capability for mobile systems in robotics, due to its advantages: illumination invariance, wide field-of-view, ease of identifying heat-emitting objects, and long term tracking without interruption. Unfortunately, O-D IR sensors have low resolution, low frame rates, high cost, sensor noise, and an increase in tracking time. In order to overcome these disadvantages, we propose an autonomous system application in indoor scenarios including 1) Dynamic 3D Reconstruction (D3DR) of the target view in real time images, 2) Human Behavior-based Target Tracking from O-D thermal images, 3) Thermal Multisensor Fusion (TMF), and 4) Visual Perception …

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are becoming more widely used in the new era of evolving technology; increasing performance while decreasing size, weight, and cost. A UAS equipped with a Flight Control System (FCS) that can be used to fly semi- or fully-autonomous is a prime example of a Cyber Physical and Safety Critical system. Current Cyber-Physical defenses against malicious attacks are structured around security standards for best practices involving the development of protocols and the digital software implementation. Thus far, few attempts have been made to embed security into the architecture of the system considering security as a holistic problem. …

Respiratory Prediction And Image Quality Improvement Of 4d Cone Beam Ct And Mri For Lung Tumor Treatments, Seonyeong Park Jan 2017

Respiratory Prediction And Image Quality Improvement Of 4d Cone Beam Ct And Mri For Lung Tumor Treatments, Seonyeong Park

Theses and Dissertations

Identification of accurate tumor location and shape is highly important in lung cancer radiotherapy, to improve the treatment quality by reducing dose delivery errors. Because a lung tumor moves with the patient's respiration, breathing motion should be correctly analyzed and predicted during the treatment for prevention of tumor miss or undesirable treatment toxicity. Besides, in Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), the tumor motion causes difficulties not only in delivering accurate dose, but also in assuring superior quality of imaging techniques such as four-dimensional (4D) Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and 4D Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Specifically, 4D CBCT used in CBCT …
