Damage Assessment In Aging Structures Using Augmented Reality, Omar Zuhair Awadallah, Ayan Sadhu Aug 2022

Damage Assessment In Aging Structures Using Augmented Reality, Omar Zuhair Awadallah, Ayan Sadhu

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the assessment of bridges and observation of data regarding these bridges over time to monitor their evolution and detect the presence of any possible damages. However, existing methods to perform structural inspections in bridges are high in cost, time-consuming and risky. Inspectors use expensive equipment to reach a certain area of the bridge to inspect it, and at different heights, this can pose a risk to the inspector’s safety. This study aims to find cheaper, faster, and safer ways to perform structural inspections using augmented reality and artificial intelligence. The developed system uses a machine …

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Parts: A Review, Jacob Pessin Jun 2019

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Parts: A Review, Jacob Pessin

Honors Theses

Structural health monitoring has the potential to allow composite structures to be more reliable and safer, then by using more traditional damage assessment techniques. Structural health monitoring (SHM) utilizes individual sensor units that are placed throughout the load bearing sections of a structure and gather data that is used for stress analysis and damage detection. Statistical time based algorithms are used to analyze collected data and determine both damage size and probable location from within the structure. While traditional calculations and life span analysis can be done for structures made of isotropic materials such as steel or other metals, composites …

Development Of A Mechanical Device For Measuring Connection Rotations During Seismic Loading, Garrett Tatum May 2019

Development Of A Mechanical Device For Measuring Connection Rotations During Seismic Loading, Garrett Tatum

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This engineering design project sought to design a cheap and easy-to-use sensor to monitor seismic connection rotations in steel buildings during earthquakes by using a linear ratchet mechanism. The idea for the project goes against the mainstream of research that is seeking to develop complex digital networks for monitoring structures in earthquake regions. Whereas many modern sensor networks require high-cost, professionally maintained digital networks, an analog sensor could provide much of the same information at a fraction of the cost, allowing sensors to be more widely utilized, particularly in developing countries. This project required an iterative engineering design process to …

Development, Training, Education, And Implementation Of Low-Cost Sensing Technologies For Bridge Structural Health Monitoring (Shm), Fernando Moreu, Chris Lippitt, Dilendra Maharjan, Marlon Aguero, Roya Nasimi Nov 2018

Development, Training, Education, And Implementation Of Low-Cost Sensing Technologies For Bridge Structural Health Monitoring (Shm), Fernando Moreu, Chris Lippitt, Dilendra Maharjan, Marlon Aguero, Roya Nasimi

Publications

Transportation infrastructure needs continuous monitoring. However, traditional inspections cost money and are conducted visually. New technologies for bridge monitoring are expensive and complex. This project involved developing cost-effective sensor technologies that can be applied towards the maintenance of railroad bridges by recording reference-free transverse displacement. More specifically, this project developed new applications of new technologies (Arduino, wireless smart sensors, drones, Hololens) and promoted workforce development with an emphasis on outreach of high-school students. This project was carried out in three main phases: (1) development and validation of technologies, (2) education and outreach to students, and (3) outreach to industry consisting …

Novel Structural Health Monitoring And Damage Detection Approaches For Composite And Metallic Structures, Shervin Tashakori Jun 2018

Novel Structural Health Monitoring And Damage Detection Approaches For Composite And Metallic Structures, Shervin Tashakori

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical durability of the structures should be continuously monitored during their operation. Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques are typically used for gathering the information which can be used for evaluating the current condition of a structure regarding the existence, location, and severity of the damage. Damage can occur in a structure after long-term operating under service loads or due to incidents. By detection of these defects at the early stages of their growth and nucleation, it would be possible to not only improve the safety of the structure but also reduce the operating costs. The main goal of this dissertation …

Detection Of Fatigue Damage In Shear Connections Using Acoustic Wave Propagation, Zichao Wang Jan 2017

Detection Of Fatigue Damage In Shear Connections Using Acoustic Wave Propagation, Zichao Wang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Fatigue damage is an important concern in structural steel connections where frequent load reversals are expected. Detection of fatigue damage is typically done with infrequent visual inspections that are subjective and limited to surface features. A permanent embedded structural health monitoring (SHM) system could be helpful in detecting damage as it occurs. Current methods for detecting fatigue damage include inference of fatigue life expended through cycle counting from long-term strain measurement campaigns, and through short-term impedance measurements. The first approach has the advantage that it is relatively simple from an algorithmic point of view, but it is an indirect measure …

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels, Luca Letizia Jan 2016

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels, Luca Letizia

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This work is focusing to study the structural behavior of Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs). These COPVs are found in many engineering applications. In the aerospace field, they are installed onto spaceships and aid the reorientation of the spacecraft in very far and airless, therefore frictionless, orbits to save energy and fuel. The intent of this research is to analyze the difference in performance of both perfectly intact and purposely damaged tanks. Understanding both the source and location of a structural fault will help NASA engineers predict the performance of COPVs subject to similar conditions, which could prevent failures of …

Structural Health Monitoring And Damage Identification Of Bridges Using Triaxial Geophones And Time Series Analysis, Reza Vasheghani Farahani Aug 2013

Structural Health Monitoring And Damage Identification Of Bridges Using Triaxial Geophones And Time Series Analysis, Reza Vasheghani Farahani

Doctoral Dissertations

This study uses the vibration data of two full-scale bridges, subjected to controlled damage, along the I-40 west, near downtown Knoxville, TN, to evaluate the feasibility of time series-based damage identification techniques for structural health monitoring. The vibration data was acquired for the entrance ramp to James White Parkway from I-40 westbound, and the I-40 westbound bridge over 4th Avenue, before the bridges were demolished during I-40 expansion project called Smartfix40. The vibration data was recorded using an array of triaxial geophones, highly sensitive sensors to record vibrations, in healthy and damaged conditions of the bridges. The vibration data is …

Computer-Aided Engineering Tools For Structural Health Monitoring Under Operational Conditions, Priscilla O. Mensah-Bonsu May 2012

Computer-Aided Engineering Tools For Structural Health Monitoring Under Operational Conditions, Priscilla O. Mensah-Bonsu

Master's Theses

This thesis presents two different applications of computer-aided non-destructive approaches for structures monitored under operational conditions. The first part of the thesis is the development of a graphical user interface (GUI) software for real-time autonomous assessment of structural health condition based on the signature vibration properties of the structure under study. The program, called ConImote2, operates on the wireless sensor network platform called imote2. ConImote2 is created in the Matlab platform for accessibility and to enable extension of its capabilities by the user. The primary goal of creating the program is to overcome the issue of data inundation from SHM …
