Makara Journal of Technology

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the main causes of liver damage, which can also lead to chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection. More than 240 million individuals worldwide are chronic carriers of HBV. Among individuals with CHB who are untreated, approximately 15% – 40% will progress to liver cirrhosis or cancer. The interactions between HBV and host immune response play significant roles in the progression of CHB. CHB can be generally divided into four different clinical phases: immune tolerance (IT), immune clearance, inactive carrier, and Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-negative reactivation phase (ENEG). Many studies showed that interleukins …

Optimization techniques are studied to attain optimum performance of bandpass microstrip filters to ensure minimum insertion loss, high selectivity, compactness, sharp transitions at cut-off frequencies, high return loss, and excellent linearity. Extensive study shows that proper selection of fabrication techniques and type of material …

Failure Sampling With Optimized Ensemble Approach For The Structural Reliability Analysis Of Complex Problems, Christopher Eamon, Kapil Patki, Ahmad Alsendi Oct 2020

Failure Sampling With Optimized Ensemble Approach For The Structural Reliability Analysis Of Complex Problems, Christopher Eamon, Kapil Patki, Ahmad Alsendi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

Failure sampling is a structural reliability method based on modified conditional expectation suitable for complex problems for which reliability index-based approaches are inapplicable and simulation is needed. Such problems tend to have non-smooth limit state boundaries or are otherwise highly nonlinear. Previous studies recommended implementation of failure sampling with an extrapolation technique using Johnson's distribution or the generalized lambda distribution. However, what implementation method works best is problem dependent. The uncertainty of which approach provides best results for a particular problem limits the potential effectiveness of the method. In this study, a solution is proposed to this issue that eliminates …

Make Or Buy Analysis Model Based On Tolerance Design To Minimize Manufacturing Cost And Quality Loss, Cucuk Nur Rosyidi, Reza Rizkichani Akbar, Wakhid Ahmad Jauhari

Makara Journal of Technology

In a manufacturing company, manufacturing costs, or component prices, and tolerance will affect the price and the quality of a product. Companies must produce high-quality products with low manufacturing costs in order to keep their products competitive in the market; however, it is difficult to produce a high-quality product with a low manufacturing cost. Companies have difficulties in determining the components to be produced using their own manufacturing facilities (make) or outsourced to their suppliers (buy). Hence, a make or buy analysis is needed to minimize the manufacturing costs and quality loss and to determine the optimum alternative regarding make …

Reliability-Based Design Optimization Of Concrete Flexural Members Reinforced With Ductile Frp Bars, Bashar Behnam, Christopher D. Eamon Jun 2013

Reliability-Based Design Optimization Of Concrete Flexural Members Reinforced With Ductile Frp Bars, Bashar Behnam, Christopher D. Eamon

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

In recent years, ductile hybrid FRP (DHFRP) bars have been developed for use as tensile reinforcement. However, initial material costs regain high, and it is difficult to simultaneously meet strength, stiffness, ductility, and reliability demands. In this study, a reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is conducted to determine minimum cost DHFRP bar configurations while enforcing essential constraints. Applications for bridge decks and building beams are considered, with 2, 3, and 4-material bars. It was found that optimal bar configuration has little variation for the different applications, and that overall optimized bar cost decreased as the number of bar materials increased.

Comparison Between Three Types Of Cable Stayed Bridges Using Structural Optimization, Olfat Sarhang Zadeh Oct 2012

Comparison Between Three Types Of Cable Stayed Bridges Using Structural Optimization, Olfat Sarhang Zadeh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Cable stayed bridges have good stability, optimum use of structural materials, aesthetic, relatively low design and maintenance costs, and efficient structural characteristics. Therefore, this type of bridges are becoming more and more popular and are usually preferred for long span crossings compared to suspension bridges. A cable-stayed bridge consists of one or more towers with cables supporting the bridge deck. In terms of cable arrangements, the most common type of cable stayed bridges are fan, harp, and semi fan bridges. Because of their large size and nonlinear structural behaviour, the analysis of these types of bridges is more complicated than …

Advanced Design Optimization Of Cold-Formed Steel Portal Frame Buildings, Duoc T. Phan, James B. P. Lim, Tiku T. Tanyimboh, Wei Sha

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The design optimization of cold-formed steel portal frame buildings is considered in this paper. The objective function is based on the cost of the members for the main frame and secondary members (i.e., purlins, girts, and cladding for walls and roofs) per unit area on the plan of the building. A realcoded niching genetic algorithm is used to minimize the cost of the frame and secondary members that are designed on the basis of ultimate limit state. It is shown that the proposed algorithm shows effective and robust capacity in generating the optimal solution, owing to the population’s diversity being …

An Efficient Genetic Algorithm For The Design Optimization Of Cold-Formed Steel Portal Frame Buildings, Duoc T. Phan, James B. P. Lim, Tiku T. Tanyimboh, Wei Sha

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The design optimization of cold-formed steel portal frame buildings is considered in this paper. The real-coded genetic algorithm (GA) optimizer proposed considers both building’s topology (i.e. frame spacing and pitch) and cross-sectional sizes of the main structural members as the decision variables that are optimized. Previous GAs in the literature were characterized by poor convergence including slow progress that usually results in excessive computation times and/or frequent failure to achieve an optimal or near-optimal solution. This is the main issue addressed in this paper. In an effort to improve the performance of the conventional GA, a niching strategy is presented …

Optimizing Fermentation Medium To Produce Cyclosporin A Using Response Surface Methodology, Rofiq Sunaryanto Apr 2012

Optimizing Fermentation Medium To Produce Cyclosporin A Using Response Surface Methodology, Rofiq Sunaryanto

Makara Journal of Technology

Response surface methodology (RSM) is a three factorial model which illustrates the relationship between one or more independent variables. RSM can be used to optimize the fermentation medium for the production of Cyclosporin A from the isolate Tolypocladium inflatum. The optimal point of the response surface area is predicted by using a seconddegree polynomial model and applying the statistic model obtained from the central composite design (CCD). The results of optimizing the fermentation medium for Cyclopsorin using the three independent variables of glucose, casein, and KH2PO4 show that all three of the independent variables affect the production of Cyclosporin A. …

Experimental And Numerical Development Of Anchor-Jointed Precast Structural Wall System And Optimum Design Of Prestressed Slabs, Mohamed El Semelawy

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Precast concrete shear walls are used to resist lateral loads in low- to medium-rise buildings. An innovative joining technique is proposed to accelerate construction process and to reduce concrete damage possibility and capital loss during an earthquake event. Panels are jointed using steel anchor bolts, therefore, the system is designated "anchor-jointed precast structural wall system". In this system, anchors are utilized as a structural fuse. Damaged anchors are easily replaced after an earthquake, thus minimizing repair costs and serviceability disruptions. In the first part of this thesis, conceptual development of the system is carried out. A research program of combined …

Natural Gas As Petroleum Fuel Substitution: Analysis Of Supply-Demand Projections, Infrastructures, Investments And End-User Prices, Abdul Qoyum Tjandranegara, Arsegianto Arsegianto, Widodo Wahyu Purwanto

Makara Journal of Technology

The petroleum fuels (PF) subsidy has long burdens the government spending, and discourages less expensive energy usage such as natural gas (NG). Exporting NG and importing the more expensive PF products cause financial losses to Indonesia. The lack of NG infrastructure is the main hurdle in maximizing domestic NG usage and so does the perception of its high investment costs burdening government spending and pushing the NG transportation cost up. This study calculates the required NG infrastructure and its investments for several levels of PF substitutions up to 2030. To balance the NG demands, the supply from each field and …
