Roughness Characterization Of Rock Fracture And Its Influence On Fracture Seepage Characteristics, Lei Gan, Yu Liu, Zong-Liang Zhang, Zhen-Zhong Shen, Hong-Ying Ma

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Roughness of rock fracture has a significant influence on the seepage characteristics of fracture. The point cloud data of rock fracture surface was collected by three-dimensional (3D) optical scanning system. The joint roughness coefficient (JRC) and surface roughness ratio (Rs) were calculated by SURFER and GEOMAGIC STUDIO, and the quantitative relationship between JRC and Rs was established. The effects of JRC and Rs on the fracture seepage characteristics in limestone were investigated by conducting seepage tests under the coupling effect of stress, seepage and chemical interaction. The results show that JRC is a logarithmic function of Rs, with the R-squared …

Permeability Prediction For Expansive Soil Based On Physical Properties Using Artificial Neural Networks, Ferry Fatnanta, Imam Suprayogi, Nicola Rabb Ranata, Soewignjo Agus Nugroho, Agus Ika Putra

Makara Journal of Technology

Permeability is a soil parameter related to the construction industry to understand the processes of infiltration, runoff, and settlement. The risk of testing errors is inevitable in permeability investigations, especially in expansive soils. Trial and error in permeability testing becomes difficult due to soils with small pore sizes and large shrinkage expansion. Several studies related to soil physical properties that affect permeability have been conducted. However, the correlation results obtained still have poor accuracy. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are machine learning systems that can change their structure to solve problems that are included in the system. The use of ANNs …

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Permeability prediction during hydrocarbon production is a rather important problem. The decrease in permeability due to depletion reserves and the drop in reservoir pressure (increase in effective pressure) leads to an increase in the time of oil or gas production. A large number of works have been devoted to the problem of permeability reduction due to effective pressure. Establishment of permeability models is carried out by various methods including coreflooding tests and field well tests. The results of previous studies have shown that permeability has a power-law or exponential dependence on effective pressure, however, the difficulty in predicting permeability is …

Permeability And Porosity Of Loose Granular Salt, Evan J. Babcock Jul 2022

Permeability And Porosity Of Loose Granular Salt, Evan J. Babcock

Civil Engineering ETDs

In this study, permeability and porosity measurements are made and reported for loose granular salt from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). Measurements are made on a particularly wide range of particle sizes of this salt in a permeameter constructed large enough to fit and represent mixtures containing salt particles up to 25.4 cm in size. Salt samples with different particle size distributions are constructed and tested at varying levels of consolidation due to induced vibrations. Permeability measurements are made at a varying range of porosities for a given sample. Measurements are also compared with a predictive model for permeability …

Effects Of Flow Path Factors In The Permeability Of Natural And Man-Made Granular Soils Using The Kozeny-Carman Equation, Robert Davies May 2021

Effects Of Flow Path Factors In The Permeability Of Natural And Man-Made Granular Soils Using The Kozeny-Carman Equation, Robert Davies

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The research presented in this paper serves to observe how the flow path factors relate to the void ratio, the effective diameter of a soil particle, and the permeability of a given sample assuming the behavior is consistent across natural and artificial soils. The basis of the comparison is the derived Kozeny-Carman Equation for permeability with focus on the factors Cs and Cl where Cs represents the shape of the flow path and Cl represents the length of the flow path that a single water molecule must travel through a soil sample. Permeameter tests were conducted …

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Characterization Of Ottawa Sand And Kaolin Clay Through Experimental Models., Mohammad Joshaghani May 2021

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Characterization Of Ottawa Sand And Kaolin Clay Through Experimental Models., Mohammad Joshaghani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in energy geotechnics and increased utilization of ground source heat pump systems (e.g., geothermal boreholes and energy y piles) and energy geo-structures require improving the understanding of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of soil. Energy geo-structures consist of above-ground facilities, buried structures, and the soil surrounding the buried structure. A buried structure transfers the energy between the ground and above-ground facilities. Energy transfer between above-ground facilities and the soil will cause temperature changes in soil and this will affect soil hydro-mechanical properties. The changes in soil temperature can also significantly alter the soil-structure interaction and its mechanical strength. Soil temperature …

Strength, Fracture Evolution, And Permeability Changes From Confined Brazilian Tests On Sandstone, Tyler Louis Hagengruber Jan 2021

Strength, Fracture Evolution, And Permeability Changes From Confined Brazilian Tests On Sandstone, Tyler Louis Hagengruber

Civil Engineering ETDs

This research reports on confined Brazilian strength tests and concurrent permeability testing on sandstone. The majority of the tests measured permeability during loading to failure in the confined extension region. Additional testing includes unloading and reloading cycles to detect the development of microcracks and the dependence of permeability on mixed stress conditions. Further testing characterizes fracture networks by observing porosity changes due to microcrack interactions before peak load. All tests involve 5 cm diameter disk-shaped, jacketed samples that are subjected to confining stresses while they are diametrically loaded. Specially designed end caps allow for gas flow measurements. The test configuration …

Evolution And Mechanism Of Permeability Of Unconsolidated Sandstone Under High Hydrostatic Pressure Compaction, Fu-Jian Yang, Da-Wei Hu, Zhen-Bao Tian, Hui Zhou, Jing-Jing Lu, Yu-Jie Luo, Shu-Qiang Gui Sep 2020

Evolution And Mechanism Of Permeability Of Unconsolidated Sandstone Under High Hydrostatic Pressure Compaction, Fu-Jian Yang, Da-Wei Hu, Zhen-Bao Tian, Hui Zhou, Jing-Jing Lu, Yu-Jie Luo, Shu-Qiang Gui

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The unconsolidated sandstone in hydrothermal geothermal field in Jianghan basin is taken as the research object. The hydrostatic pressure is applied to a geostress equal to 12.5 MPa. After the deformation of sample is stabilised, the evolution and mechanism of the permeability of unconsolidated sandstone under the compaction of high hydrostatic pressure are studied, which can provide some suggestions for the selection of equipment operating parameters for the tailwater recharge process in the hydrothermal geothermal field. The results indicate that under high hydrostatic pressure compaction, the permeability of unconsolidated sandstone samples tends to be a constant valued of 4.0×10?3 ?m2 …
