Fault-Tree Model For Bridge Collapse Risk Analysis, Caitlyn Davis-Mcdaniel
Fault-Tree Model For Bridge Collapse Risk Analysis, Caitlyn Davis-Mcdaniel
All Theses
Bridges are vital components of the United States surface transportation infrastructure and, moreover, support the growth of our nation's economy. However, over the past few decades the design capacity and service condition of many bridges in the U.S. has been challenged. Numerous incidents of bridge collapse call for an urgent need to develop a systematic method of assessing the failure risks and identifying the initiating events that can lead to a bridge collapse. This thesis presents a process of bridge failure risk analysis through fault-tree modeling and identification of specific countermeasures, to minimize failure risk, related to structural health monitoring …
Development And Application Of A Three-Dimensional Probabilistic Wind-Borne Debris Trajectory Model, James Grayson
Development And Application Of A Three-Dimensional Probabilistic Wind-Borne Debris Trajectory Model, James Grayson
All Theses
This research presents a probabilistic debris trajectory model adapted from current 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) deterministic models, in which the aleatoric (inherent) uncertainty is explicitly considered in the proposed probabilistic model. While the inherent randomness in the debris flight trajectory is irreducible due to the wind turbulence, variation in wind direction, gustiness of the wind event and so forth, the proposed probabilistic model seeks to address these uncertainties through Monte Carlo simulations with the appropriate statistical distributions applied to the governing equations of motion of the debris. Verification of the probabilistic debris trajectory model is performed through an analytical and visual comparison …
Influence Of Pavement Type On Near Surface Air Temperature, David Duncan
Influence Of Pavement Type On Near Surface Air Temperature, David Duncan
All Theses
Effects from an Urban Heat Island (UHI) can be detrimental to the world as a whole. This study examines a collection of permeable and conventional pavements in South Carolina to determine how they relate to near surface air temperatures, which is an indicator of the UHI impact of an area. Three locations were used, each with a different selection of pavement type. Permeable and conventional forms of both asphalt and concrete were tested, as were some open graded friction course samples. Air temperatures were measured and recorded from the pavement surface up to an elevation of 60-in.

The Integration Of Building Information Modeling (Bim) Into Civil Engineering Curricula, Jason Cooksey
The Integration Of Building Information Modeling (Bim) Into Civil Engineering Curricula, Jason Cooksey
All Theses
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an emerging technology used in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry. The proliferation of BIM usage across the industry has been swift and prolific. Academia has lagged behind the adoption rate of the industry by not producing enough students with BIM exposure. Thus, the question is whether civil engineering curricula should provide an understanding of BIM technology to students entering the design and construction profession. The immediate objective of this research is to determine if it is important to provide exposure of BIM to undergraduate or graduate students in the civil engineering curricula and if so to …
Determining Transverse Design Forces For A Next-D Bridge Using 3d Finite Element Modeling, Robert Funcik
Determining Transverse Design Forces For A Next-D Bridge Using 3d Finite Element Modeling, Robert Funcik
All Theses
This thesis looks into the use of 3D Finite Element Modeling to determine the transverse design forces for short-span bridges built using the Northeast Extreme Tee with integral deck (NEXT-D) beam. Models were built using either solid elements or shell elements to represent the bridge deck, and the results were compared. The stiffness of the shear keys were taken into account during the modeling process. Results were compared to the AASHTO strip width method for design bridge decks, and the results showed that the strip width method would not be adequate for the design of NEXT-D bridges, so specific live …
Reducing Moisture Damage In Asphalt Mixes Using Recycled Waste Additives, Anthony John Boyes
Reducing Moisture Damage In Asphalt Mixes Using Recycled Waste Additives, Anthony John Boyes
Master's Theses
This thesis has determined that using fly ash as a mineral filler in asphalt pavements can help strengthen and reduce asphalt moisture damage. Also, dynamic shear rheometer tests show that these additives have a stiffening effect on asphalt binder. Moisture related damage is considered one of the main causes of asphalt pavement failure. As water infiltrates a layer of asphalt, it slowly strips away asphalt binder, weakening the aggregate/binder bond. This process, combined with the cyclic loading of traffic, can lead to several different types of asphalt failure including rutting, raveling, bleeding, and cracking. For several decades, research has been …
Dimensional Stability Of Geosynthetic Clay Liners In Landfill Applications, Gregory R. Olsen
Dimensional Stability Of Geosynthetic Clay Liners In Landfill Applications, Gregory R. Olsen
Master's Theses
An investigation was conducted related to the dimensional stability of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) in landfill applications. Multiple occurrences of panel separation of overlap seams in GCLs have been documented; however, explanation for the relative contribution of various mechanisms causing shrinkage has been limited. A systematic test program was conducted to determine the effects of a variety of conditions on GCL dimensional stability.
Effects of initial moisture content, permeant type, and overburden pressure were tested by subjecting various GCL products to wet-dry cycles and measuring the dimensional change with each cycle. Different GCL types were each tested under various combinations …
Effects Of High-Impedance-Contrast Boundary Upon Multi-Modal Seismic Surface Wave Data, Prajwol Tamrakar
Effects Of High-Impedance-Contrast Boundary Upon Multi-Modal Seismic Surface Wave Data, Prajwol Tamrakar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Synthetic studies and analyses of an experimental dataset were conducted to address the use of Rayleigh-type surface waves for estimation of shear wave velocity (VS) profiles of shallow bedrock sites. The shallow bedrock presents a high impedance contrast boundary which causes surface wave energy to be partitioned to higher modes. Idealized studies of hypothetical datasets and root-mean-squared calculations of error surfaces showed that if reliable dispersion data are available over a broad frequency spectrum, the VS profile can be recovered using the fundamental mode alone. However, when dispersion data are limited to a relatively narrow frequency band representing what might …
Wim Based Load Models For Bridge Serviceability Limit States, Przemyslaw Rakoczy
Wim Based Load Models For Bridge Serviceability Limit States, Przemyslaw Rakoczy
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The safety of aging bridge inventory is one of the main concerns of the state and federal agencies. Therefore, there is a need to quantify the safety margin of existing infrastructure and new design bridges. The Serviceability Limit States, i.e. fatigue, requires additional statistical parameters and not only the maximum values but also load spectra, i.e. frequency of occurrence of loads. The maximum values are needed for shorter time periods, such as day, week, month or year. Load spectra as well as material resistance are random variables. To quantify the safety margin of existing and future bridges load and resistance …

State Dependent Properties Of Rail Pads, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alexander Remennikov
State Dependent Properties Of Rail Pads, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alexander Remennikov
Alex Remennikov
Rail pad is one of the main components in ballasted railway track systems. It is inserted between the rail and the sleeper to attenuate dynamic wheel/rail interaction forces, preventing the underlying railway track components from excessive stresses. Generally, the dynamic design of tracks relies on the available data, which are mostly focused on the structural condition at a specific toe load. Recent findings show that track irregularities could significantly amplify the loads on railway tracks. This phenomenon gives rise to a concern that the rail pads may experience higher deterioration rate than anticipated in the past. On this ground, an …
Relationship Between Impact Energy And Fracture Toughness Of Prestressed Concrete Railway Sleepers, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alexander Remennikov
Relationship Between Impact Energy And Fracture Toughness Of Prestressed Concrete Railway Sleepers, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alexander Remennikov
Alex Remennikov
The prestressed concrete sleepers (or railroad ties), which are installed in railway track systems as the crosstie beam support, are designed to carry and transfer the wheel loads from the rails to the ground. It is well known that railway tracks are subject to impact loading conditions, which are attributable to the train operations with either wheel or rail abnormalities such as flat wheels, dipped rails, etc. These loads are of very high magnitude but short duration. In addition, there exists the potential of repeated load experience during the design life of prestressed concrete sleepers. Prestressed concrete has played a …
Dynamic Design Guidelines For Prestressed Concrete Sleepers, Alexander Remennikov, Martin H. Murray, Sakdirat Kaewunruen
Dynamic Design Guidelines For Prestressed Concrete Sleepers, Alexander Remennikov, Martin H. Murray, Sakdirat Kaewunruen
Alex Remennikov
Current design philosophy, outlined in AS 1085.14, is based on the analysis of permissible stresses resulting from quasi-static wheel loads and essentially the static response of concrete sleepers. In general, cracking can incur when the bottom fibre stress is larger than tensile strength of concrete. Premature cracking of prestressed concrete sleepers has been detected in railway tracks. The major cause of cracking is the infrequent but high-magnitude wheel loads produced by a small percentage of “out-of-round” wheels or railhead surface defects, which are crudely accounted for in AS 1085.14 by a single load factor. Based on the current design method, …
Dynamic Properties Of Railway Track And Its Components : A State-Of-The-Art Review, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alexander Remennikov
Dynamic Properties Of Railway Track And Its Components : A State-Of-The-Art Review, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Alexander Remennikov
Alex Remennikov
Recent findings indicate one of major causes of damages, which is attributed to the resonant behaviours, in a railway track and its components. Basically, when a railway track is excited to generalised dynamic loading, the railway track deforms and then vibrates for certain duration. Dynamic responses of the railway track and its components are the key to evaluate the structural capacity of railway track and its components. If a dynamic loading resonates the railway track’s dynamic responses, its components tend to have the significant damage from excessive dynamic stresses. For example, a rail vibration could lead to defects in rails …

Seismic Microzonation Of Great Toronto Area And Influence Of Building Resonances On Measured Soil Responses, Dimitar Genchev Mihaylov
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A pilot seismic microzonation of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is used to establish the conditions and limitations of geophysical methods for site response investigations in city conditions. Maps of fundamental soil resonant frequencies, amplifications at these frequencies and interpolated average shear wave velocity of top 30 m of soil profile (VS- 30) used in soil classification were compared to the maps of drift thickness and surficial geology for the GTA. The non-applicability of the interpolated VS-30 map for site classification between measured test points is indicated. It is also shown that the soil response cannot be estimated properly using …

Makara Journal of Technology
Analytical and Computational Simulation Approaches to Design Low Energy Glass Block. An environmentally friendly process was developed to produce a low embodied energy glass block from waste glasses. The energy efficiency of the glass block is represented by its thermal conductance (U) <3.177 W/m2.K and solar transmittance (SHGC) ≤0.25 as well as visible light transmission (VT) ≥0.27. A cavity was applied to reduce U value while insignificantly reducing VT. Analytical method was used to calculate the U value of glass blocks, ignoring the effect of convection. Ecotect program was used to analyze light level (VT) and heat load (SHGC) of each model. Effect of convection was simulated using a CFD program, which showed air velocity inside the cavity and temperature gradient in glass blocks. Comparing to an application with 3 mm float glass, energy efficiency obtained through applying the glass blocks could reach 96%. This simulation study ignored the presence of adhesive among glass layers that potentially reduces the VT and the SHGC of the glass blocks.
