Structure And Energetics Of Nanoparticles And Ionomer Films In Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers, Qianping He Dec 2013

Structure And Energetics Of Nanoparticles And Ionomer Films In Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers, Qianping He

Doctoral Dissertations

Improving the durability and utilization efficiency of the platinum-on-carbon (Pt/C) catalyst is of vital importance to the commercialization of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). This body of work provides molecular level insights to aid the fulfillment of this goal. Chapter 1 describes the use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in an effort to understand the Pt/C degradation issue from the nano-adhesion point of view. The roles of catalyst nanoparticle size, shape, Pt/C surface oxidation and the extent of ionomer film hydration are investigated to study their effects on nano-particle adhesion. It is found that the adhesion force strengthens …

Characterization Techniques And Electrolyte Separator Performance Investigation For All Vanadium Redox Flow Battery, Zhijiang Tang Dec 2013

Characterization Techniques And Electrolyte Separator Performance Investigation For All Vanadium Redox Flow Battery, Zhijiang Tang

Doctoral Dissertations

The all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is an excellent prospect for large scale energy storage in an electricity grid level application. High battery performance has lately been achieved by using a novel cell configuration with advanced materials. However, more work is still required to better understand the reaction kinetics and transport behaviors in the battery to guide battery system optimization and new battery material development. The first part of my work is the characterization of the battery systems with flow-through or flow-by cell configurations. The configuration difference between two cell structures exhibit significantly different polarization behavior. The battery output can …

Bacteriorhodopsin-Based Sensors, Craig Friedrich, Donald Lueking, Mark Griep Oct 2013

Bacteriorhodopsin-Based Sensors, Craig Friedrich, Donald Lueking, Mark Griep

Michigan Tech Patents

A sensor comprising a membrane containing bacteriorhodopsin. In one embodiment, the sensor comprises a layer of purple membrane between a first and a second electrode, wherein the electrodes are connected to a circuit such that a signal is produced when a charge is transferred across the membrane. In another embodiment, the sensor comprises a field effect transistor with a layer of purple membrane deposited on the gate. The layer of purple membrane may be further functionalized by adding fluorophores to the layer of purple membrane. The fluorophores may be deposited adjacent to the layer of purple membrane, or the fluorophores …

Oil-In-Water Emulsification Using Oscillatory Micro-Screen, Jiangshan Liu Aug 2013

Oil-In-Water Emulsification Using Oscillatory Micro-Screen, Jiangshan Liu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A novel emulsification technique has been developed for high throughput production of uniform emulsion droplets using high porosity oscillating stainless steel wire woven micro-screen. Different surfactants were investigated including dispersed/continuous bi-surfactant systems using Span80/SDS and Span80/Tween20. The effects of oscillation amplitude and frequency as well as the dispersed phase flux on emulsion average droplet size and uniformity were investigated. It was found that the droplet average size decreased with increasing the surface sheer stress. The emulsion droplet uniformity determined using the coefficient of variation (CV) changed with oscillations such that there was an optimal oscillating frequency for each amplitude where …

Sustainable Operations For Distillation Columns, Yaşar Demirel Aug 2013

Sustainable Operations For Distillation Columns, Yaşar Demirel

Yaşar Demirel Publications

Distillation process consumes about 40% of the total energy used to operate the plants in petrochemical and chemical process industries in North America. Therefore, sustainable distillation column operation requires responsible use of energy and reduction of harmful emission such as CO2. The Aspen Plus ‘Column Targeting Tool’ (CTT) options in a simulation environment can help reduce the use of energy and hence CO2 emission. The Aspen plus ‘Carbon Tracking’ (CT) together with the ‘Global Warming Potential’ options can quantify the reduction in CO2 emission. The CTT is based on the practical near-minimum thermodynamic condition approximation and …

Performance Evaluation On Vanadium Transport Through Supported Liquid Membrane By Tomac As Carrier, Somayyeh Nosrati Dr, N S. Jayakumar Dr, Mohd Ali Hashim Dr, Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr Jan 2013

Performance Evaluation On Vanadium Transport Through Supported Liquid Membrane By Tomac As Carrier, Somayyeh Nosrati Dr, N S. Jayakumar Dr, Mohd Ali Hashim Dr, Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr

Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr

Many industries use vanadium increasingly and as a consequence, the toxic effluents cause environmental concern. Here, we study the extraction of vanadium in supported ionic liquid membrane was studied. The effect of operational conditions on the process performance such as initial feed phase concentration, pH of the feed solution, pore size of the membrane support, type of ionic liquid charged on the support and stripping agent solution was investigated. Vanadium was effectively transported from the feed phase to the stripping phase of ammonia solution using the room temperature ionic liquid, tri-n-octyl methyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC) embedded in the support membrane. …
