Cfd Study On Two-Phase Flow Patterns In A Pipe With 90º Elbow In Different Operating Conditions, Hagar Alm-Eldin Bastawissi, Mohammed Ahmed Khafagy, E. A. El Shenawy Prof. Dr., Ahmed M. Salem Dr
Journal of Engineering Research
Recently, CFD has offered a technological solution for modelling multi-phase flow in which we can make endless simulations with reduced expenses and effort in high accuracy results; we shall also mention that experimental studies have limitations for safety considerations when experimenting with flow in high temperature or pressure values or medium nature as in nuclear or chemical flows. In this paper, we used the ANSYS FLUENT CFD program to simulate the two-phase flow in a pipe to study the effect of attaching a 90-degree elbow fitting to the piping system, seeking to find out the change in the pattern and resulting …
Catalytic Ring Opening Of Mono- And Bicyclic Compounds For The Production Of Renewable Diesel And Jet Fuel, Matthew J. Kline
Catalytic Ring Opening Of Mono- And Bicyclic Compounds For The Production Of Renewable Diesel And Jet Fuel, Matthew J. Kline
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thermal DeOxygenation (TDO) is a process that converts organic acids produced from cellulose hydrolysis and dehydration into a low-oxygen bio-oil containing substituted naphthene compounds. The high aromatic content is desirable for gasoline fractions, but middle distillates such as diesel and jet fuel require upgrading via hydrogenation and ring opening to achieve better combustion characteristics. Previous research has demonstrated that TDO oil could be hydrogenated over high-surface-area nickel catalysts to improve the combustion characteristics, but the cetane number was still below the specifications.
Multiple supported catalysts were synthesized by ion exchange and incipient wetness impregnation, and the catalysts were characterized by …
Towards A Circular Economy: Liquid-Fed Fast Pyrolysis Of Waste Polyolefin Plastics, Daniel G. Kulas
Towards A Circular Economy: Liquid-Fed Fast Pyrolysis Of Waste Polyolefin Plastics, Daniel G. Kulas
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Plastic usage has quickly grown in recent years as plastics have become an essential part of everyday life. Unfortunately, recycling rates have not matched the increased growth, with the majority of waste plastic landfilled. The strategy of circular economy has been proposed to reuse the waste plastic to create new polymers, thus avoiding both landfilling and the use of virgin raw materials. Achieving a circular economy for plastics requires the development of new technologies capable of recycling plastic waste under a circular economy perspective. In this dissertation, a novel liquid-fed fast pyrolysis process is introduced towards achieving a circular economy. …

Investigative Study Of Microalgal And Electrochemical Wastewater Treatment Systems And Modeling Of The Wafer-Enhanced Electrodeionization Using Supervised Learning, Humeyra Betul Ulusoy Erol
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wastewater has a serious impact on environment and public health due to its high concentration of nutrients and toxic contaminants. Without proper treatment, excess nutrients discharged in wastewater can cause a damage to the ecosystem such as undesirable pH shifts, cyanotoxin production, and low dissolved oxygen concentrations.
Main objectives of this dissertation work were to investigate i) the biofuel potential of P. cruentum when grown in swine wastewater, ii) the influence of four most commonly used ion exchange resins on the system efficiency and selectivity for the removal of sodium, calcium, and magnesium ions, and iii) the modeling of wafer-enhanced …
Hydrogenation Of 2-Methylnaphthalene In A Trickle Bed Reactor Over Bifunctional Nickel Catalysts, Matthew J. Kline
Hydrogenation Of 2-Methylnaphthalene In A Trickle Bed Reactor Over Bifunctional Nickel Catalysts, Matthew J. Kline
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biomass thermal conversion processes, such as pyrolysis, tend to produce mixtures of mono- and poly-aromatic species. While the high aromatic content is desirable in gasoline fractions, middle-distillate cuts, particularly jet fuel and diesel, require upgrading via hydrogenation and ring opening to achieve better combustion characteristics. There have been many proposed methods for producing drop-in fuels from woody biomass, one of them being Thermal DeOxygenation (TDO). The TDO process converts organic acids from cellulose hydrolysis into a low-oxygen bio-oil containing large amounts of substituted naphthalene compounds.
Poly-aromatic molecules, such as those found in TDO oil, have low cetane numbers (CN), particularly …

Particle Entrainment Studies From Dry And Wet Bed, Saber Ayatollahi
Particle Entrainment Studies From Dry And Wet Bed, Saber Ayatollahi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
During the Fluid Coking Process™ bitumen is sprayed into a fluidized bed of hot coke particles. The bitumen undergoes thermal cracking and is converted into gasses, condensable vapors, and solid coke, which deposits on the coke particles. These vapors rise through the vessel and result in entrainment of coke particles. Wet fine coke particles from the freeboard region enter the cyclone and contribute to the fouling of the Coker cyclones which can lead to the premature shut-down of Fluid Cokers.
The primary objective of this research is to determine how bed wetness affects entrainment.
First, a new fluidized bed was …

Cluster Fluid Dynamics In Down Flow Reactors: Experimental And Modeling Study, Angel Virgilio Lanza Soto
Cluster Fluid Dynamics In Down Flow Reactors: Experimental And Modeling Study, Angel Virgilio Lanza Soto
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Gas–solid concurrent downers possess unique features when compared to other gas–solid systems. Establishing their fluid dynamic properties requires both experimental measurements of gas-solid flow properties and computational modeling.
Measuring gas-solid flow properties such as cluster solid concentrations, individual cluster slip velocities, and cluster sizes, involves the use of specialized optical equipment, as well as a rigorous data analysis methodology. In addition, the modeling of the fluid dynamics of gas-solid flows in downer units offers special challenges such as establishing a proper drag model, cluster configuration and sizes, sphericity, boundary conditions, among other issues.
In this PhD dissertation, the fluid dynamics …

The Catalysis Of Delayed Petroleum Coking, Anya M. Heinimann, Robert Khakimov, Hyun-Tae Hwang, Enrico N. Martinez
The Catalysis Of Delayed Petroleum Coking, Anya M. Heinimann, Robert Khakimov, Hyun-Tae Hwang, Enrico N. Martinez
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Due to the decreasing crude oil quality (heavier crudes and increasing contaminant concentrations) methods for upgrading residues from the refining process, such as coking, are becoming increasingly important. Delayed coking, a method by which residues are thermally cracked (large heavy molecules broken into smaller lighter molecules), produces liquid products and solid coke which can both be sold for further profit. In order to increase the amount of liquid products produced since they are the most value added product of the coking process catalysts (platinum on 0.5% alumina and nickel (skeletal),molybdenum promoted (1 wt%)) were tested to see how they would …
Catalysis In Petroleum Coking, Robert Khakimov, Anya Heinimann, Enrico Martinez, Hyun-Tae Hwang
Catalysis In Petroleum Coking, Robert Khakimov, Anya Heinimann, Enrico Martinez, Hyun-Tae Hwang
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The petroleum industry is challenged with the processing of present heavy crudes caused by high composition of sulfur and metals, which lead to a higher yield of unfavorable bottom product as vacuum residue. Vacuum residue is the least valuable fraction of four, such as saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes. However, it can be upgraded to recover more valuable products such as light hydrocarbons. The Delayed Coking process is going to be used to transform the vacuum residue at different experimental conditions. First of all, the behavior of the vacuum residue needs to be analyzed with no additions in feedstock. Secondly, …
Phase Transformations In Calcium Substituted Lanthanum Ferrite, Patrick M. Price
Phase Transformations In Calcium Substituted Lanthanum Ferrite, Patrick M. Price
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Increasing world energy demands are still heavily dependent on fossil fuels. To meet these demands, crude oil is increasingly being extracted from remote locations where natural gas pipelines do not exist. It is not profitable for oil and gas companies to transport natural gas by ship or truck from these remote locations so it is combusted on site in the form of gas flares. Critics oppose this practice due to the environmental impact from pollution and carbon emissions created during the flaring process. Oil and gas companies are eager to find profitable ways to eliminate natural gas lines in order …

In last decades, significant concerns have been raised regarding the global warming effect. To date, about one-third of the total anthropogenic CO2 emission results from power generation using fossil based fuel and CO2 is the main contributor to global warming. Therefore, technologies for efficient capture of CO2 are becoming of great value. In this respect, Chemical-Looping Combustion (CLC) has received significant attention as a promising technology facilitating concurrent CO2 capture and power generation. This non-conventional technique employs a solid carrier, known as oxygen carrier, to supply oxygen and facilitates combustion process in absence of N2 diluted air. Therefore, the combustion …

Fast Catalytic Oxidation Of Phenol Over Modified Zeolite L Nanocrystals, Eng-Poh Ng Dr.
Eng-Poh Ng
Iron modified zeolite L nanocrystals (Fe/KL) were synthesized hydrothermally by the incorporation of Fe3+ in zeolite L lattice. XRD results showed an increase in the inter-planar spacing and lattice parameters. Transition characteristic of the tetrahedral Fe3+ species were observed in the UV–Vis spectrum. The oxidation of phenol in the presence of acetic acid over Fe/KL gave 93.40% conversion in 30 min with selective formation of 77.47% catechol and 22.53% hydroquinone. The catalytic activity was significantly enhanced by the addition of acetic acid. It was found that the acetic acid was oxidized by hydrogen peroxide to form peracetic acid, which served …
Sulfonic Acid Functionalized Mcm-41 As Solid Acid Catalyst For Tert-Butylation Of Hydroquinone Enhanced By Microwave Heating, Eng-Poh Ng
Eng-Poh Ng
Covalently linked sulfonic acid (-SO3H) modified MCM-41 mesoporous catalysts was prepared, characterized and its catalytic activity under microwave irradiation was evaluated. The NH2-MCM-41 was first prepared by anchoring (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) on Si-MCM-41 and further reacted with 1,4-butane-sultone to yield the desired acid catalyst. The mesophase and porosity of samples were determined by XRD, TEM and N2 sorption isotherm analyses. The presence of sulfonic acid moiety was confirmed by FT-IR, TG/DTA, sulfur elemental analysis and in situ IR study of pyridine and ammonia adsorptions. The catalyst showed high catalytic activity and high selectivity in tert-butylation of hydroquinone under microwave irradiation. No …

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Wojciech Budzianowski
This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.
