Geometrical Analysis And Modeling Of Craniosynostosis, Sahar Shahbazi
Geometrical Analysis And Modeling Of Craniosynostosis, Sahar Shahbazi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Craniosynostosis is a developmental abnormality in skull growth, due to the fusion of one or more sutures\cite{patho}. To accommodate the growing brain. the skull needs to grow quickly in the first few months of life, and most of the growth of the skull at that time occurs at the sutures. Craniosynostosis occurs when one or more sutures are fused in utero, resulting in an abnormal skull shape. Surgical intervention is usually required at a young age, and remodeling of the skull is done for cosmetic reasons as well as to avoid raised intracranial pressure. In order to study how the …
Metrics For Evaluating Surgical Microscope Usage During Myringotomy, Arefin M. Shamsil
Metrics For Evaluating Surgical Microscope Usage During Myringotomy, Arefin M. Shamsil
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Abstract
Although teaching and learning surgical microscope manoeuvring is a fundamental step in middle ear surgical training, currently there is no objective method to teach or assess this skill. This thesis presents an experimental study designed to implement and test sets of metrics capable of numerically evaluating microscope manoeuvrability and qualitatively assessing surgical expertise of a subject during a middle ear surgery called myringotomy. The experiment involved performing a myringotomy on a fixed cadaveric ear. As participants, experienced ear-nose-throat (ENT) surgeons and ENT surgical residents were invited. While performing the procedure, their microscope manoeuvring motions were captured as translational and …
Augmented Image-Guidance For Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, Pencilla Lang
Augmented Image-Guidance For Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, Pencilla Lang
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The introduction of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), an innovative stent-based technique for delivery of a bioprosthetic valve, has resulted in a paradigm shift in treatment options for elderly patients with aortic stenosis. While there have been major advancements in valve design and access routes, TAVI still relies largely on single-plane fluoroscopy for intraoperative navigation and guidance, which provides only gross imaging of anatomical structures. Inadequate imaging leading to suboptimal valve positioning contributes to many of the early complications experienced by TAVI patients, including valve embolism, coronary ostia obstruction, paravalvular leak, heart block, and secondary nephrotoxicity from contrast use.

Coupling Of Audio Signals Into Afm Images, Matthew Manning
Coupling Of Audio Signals Into Afm Images, Matthew Manning
Honors Theses
It is well known that Atomic Force Microscopy imaging is capable of yielding high resolution results with of surfaces at the nanoscale. However, despite the device capabilities and vast applications, AFM microscopy is possibly the most prone to the creation of image artifacts. AFM imaging can easily, and is often, corrupted by various external forces. The most obvious and measurable form of external interference is of course the presence of ambient noise. Most AFM manufactures attempt to counter the effects of such noise on the imaging process through use of noise-proof or noise-resistant shields that cover the microscope aperture. Without …

Development Of A Blood Flow Measurement Protocol Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Jennifer Chi-Ying Go
Biomedical Engineering
Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease (PAOD) is an acquired inflammatory disease where a peripheral artery becomes occluded due to the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques. In patients that possess collateral arteries, an occlusion can lead to shear induced outward remodeling, arteriogenesis, of these collaterals, partially restoring blood flow. However, newly remodeled collaterals exhibit reduced functional vasodilation, which may impair normal activity, such as ambulation. To model chronic ischemia and arteriogenesis in collaterals, a femoral artery ligation in a murine hindlimb is commonly performed. Previous efforts by our group involved measurements of collateral artery diameter to assess the impact of arteriogenesis on functional …
Testing And Validation Of An Autostainer, Nicholas Hanne
Testing And Validation Of An Autostainer, Nicholas Hanne
Biomedical Engineering
Histology performed by Cal Poly students for research projects and labs are currently performed by hand using a dipping technique. This technique is time consuming, expensive, imprecise, and often unrepeatable. Central Coast Pathology donated a Dako Autostainer to the Biomedical Engineering Department that can perform immunohistological stains of up to 48 samples simultaneously using tightly controlled reagent volumes and incubation times. Protocols are programmed into the machine and can be repeated under the same conditions every time with minimal preparation and exposure to potentially dangerous reagents. The autostainer was repaired and validated by comparing PECAM & BBI stains performed on …
Real-Time Prostate Motion Tracking For Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy, Mehdi Esteghamatian
Real-Time Prostate Motion Tracking For Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy, Mehdi Esteghamatian
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Radical prostatectomy surgery (RP) is the gold standard for treatment of localized prostate cancer (PCa). Recently, emergence of minimally invasive techniques such as Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (LRP) and Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (RARP) has improved the outcomes for prostatectomy. However, it remains difficult for surgeons to make informed decisions regarding resection margins and nerve sparing since the location of the tumour within the organ is not usually visible in a laparoscopic view. While MRI enables visualization of the salient structures and cancer foci, its efficacy in LRP is reduced unless it is fused into a stereoscopic view such that homologous …
A Novel Imaging System For Automatic Real-Time 3d Patient-Specific Knee Model Reconstruction Using Ultrasound Rf Data, Rimon Adel Messiha Tadross
A Novel Imaging System For Automatic Real-Time 3d Patient-Specific Knee Model Reconstruction Using Ultrasound Rf Data, Rimon Adel Messiha Tadross
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation introduces a novel imaging method and system for automatic real-time 3D patient-specific knee model reconstruction using ultrasound RF data. The developed method uses ultrasound to transcutaneously digitize a point cloud representing the bone’s surface. This point cloud is then used to reconstruct 3D bone model using deformable models method.
In this work, three systems were developed for 3D knee bone model reconstruction using ultrasound RF data. The first system uses tracked single-element ultrasound transducer, and was experimented on 12 knee phantoms. An average reconstruction accuracy of 0.98 mm was obtained. The second system was developed using an ultrasound …
Use Of Hybrid Diffuse Optical Spectroscopies In Continuous Monitoring Of Blood Flow, Blood Oxygenation, And Oxygen Consumption Rate In Exercising Skeletal Muscle, Katelyn Gurley
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
This study combines noninvasive hybrid diffuse optical spectroscopies [near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS)] with occlusive calibration for continuous measurement of absolute blood flow (BF), tissue blood oxygenation (StO2), and oxygen consumption rate (VO2) in exercising skeletal muscle. Subjects performed rhythmic dynamic handgrip exercise, while an optical probe connected to a hybrid NIRS/DCS flow-oximeter directly monitored oxy-, deoxy-, and total hemoglobin concentrations ([HbO2], [Hb], and [tHb]), StO2, relative BF (rBF), and relative VO2 (rVO2) in the forearm flexor muscles. Absolute baseline BF and …
