Scramjet engines are key for sustained hypersonic flights. Analytic models play a critical role in the preliminary design of a scramjet engine configuration. The objective of this research is to develop and validate a quasi-1D model for the scramjet engine encompassing inlet, isolator and combustor, to evaluate the impact of flight conditions and design parameters on the engine functionality. The model is developed assuming isentropic flow in the inlet with a single turn; modified Fanno-flow equations in the isolator that account for the area change of the core flow; and the combustor is modeled using Heiser-Pratt equations accounting for the …

In the operation of a Scramjet engine, which operates at hypersonic velocities, one of the most important factors is mixing the fuel and air before the high velocity air stream through the engine blows the mixture out of the engine before it could burn. The main objectives of this report were to perform analysis of an ideal scramjet engine, to assess the influence of fuel on endurance factor, and the possibility of lowering the starting Mach Number of the scramjet. In the first part, an ideal cycle parametric analysis was conducted on three different fuels i.e. Liquid Hydrogen (LH2), Jet Propellant 7 (JP-7), and Rocket Propellant (RP-1), taking into account their availability, physical properties, current uses, and potential uses. “The numerical modeling of supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) engine flow paths plays an important role in the design of hypersonic air-breathing propulsion systems. Due to the complexity of the flow field physics and limited experimental data, numerical models possess uncertainties which should be addressed to improve the prediction accuracy of the simulations. In this study, the effect of turbulence model closure coefficient uncertainty on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solution of a scramjet isolator and scramjet strut fuel injector flow field is investigated with an uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis study for commonly used turbulence models. A numerical analysis was conducted to study the effects of geometrically scaling scramjet inlet-combustor isolators. Three-dimensional fully viscous numerical simulation of the flow inside constant area rectangular ducts, with a downstream back pressure condition, was analyzed using the SolidWorks Flow Simulation software. The baseline, or 1X, isolator configuration has a 1” x 2.67” cross section and 20” length. This baseline configuration was scaled up based on the 1X configuration mass flow to 10X and 100X configurations, with ten and one hundred times the mass flow rate, respectively.
