Global Aviation System: Towards Sustainable Development, Marina P. Bonser Dr.
Global Aviation System: Towards Sustainable Development, Marina P. Bonser Dr.
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Aviation around the world has integrated into a global system. As the integration process continues, more aspects and levels of it need to be lead towards the sustainable development of the whole system via advancing strategic management, global communication proficiency, and technological expertise. It becomes essential to enrich global language (English) proficiency with cross-cultural communication competence not only for communication in the air but also for airport security, passenger and cargo services, aircraft and equipage engineering, building, and maintenance. Nowadays lower levels of management need more advanced strategic thinking and problem solving skills, and higher levels of management need global …
A New Method For The Prediction Of The Downwash Angle Gradient, Mondher Yahyaoui Dr.
A New Method For The Prediction Of The Downwash Angle Gradient, Mondher Yahyaoui Dr.
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
A new method for the prediction of the downwash angle gradient due to aircraft wings across the span of an aft horizontal tail in the incompressible regime is presented. The approach is quite general and accounts for all practical wing geometric parameters except for wing twist where it is shown that this parameter has very little effect on the downwash angle gradient. The method consists of an empirical law which requires the prior knowledge of three constants. These have been computed either based on experimental data when available or using numerical data obtained using the vortex-lattice method. These constants are …
On Atmospheric Lapse Rates, Nihad E. Daidzic
On Atmospheric Lapse Rates, Nihad E. Daidzic
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
We have derived and summarized and most important atmospheric temperature lapse rates. ALRs essentially govern vertical atmospheric air stability and creation of some cloud types. The sensitivity analysis of various atmospheric lapse rates and their dependence on actual ideal-gas air properties and gravitational attraction was conducted for the first time to the best of our knowledge. SALR, which has DALR as the upper asymptote, showed steepest decrease at around 9 degrees Celsius then flattening out and apparently approaching another asymptotic solution which has not been investigated as it falls outside of the terrestrial temperature range. ISA lapse rates are adopted …
Design And Realization Of An Unmanned Aerial Rotorcraft Vehicle Using Pressurized Inflatable Structure, Nirmal Sadasivan
Design And Realization Of An Unmanned Aerial Rotorcraft Vehicle Using Pressurized Inflatable Structure, Nirmal Sadasivan
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Unmanned aerial rotorcraft vehicles have many military, commercial and civil applications. There is a necessity to advance the performance on several ranges of rotorcraft for using these vehicles successfully in the expanded future roles. A lower flight time, noise disturbance and safety issues remain the key obstacles in increasing the efficiency of the rotorcraft for various applications. This work presents the design and realization of a rotorcraft using pressurized inflatable structure filled with lighter than air gas such as helium or hydrogen to provide lift assistance for the vehicle. Two iterative design procedures were developed for designing the vehicle. One …
A Comparative Aerodynamic Study Of Nonplanar Wings, Mondher Yahyaoui
A Comparative Aerodynamic Study Of Nonplanar Wings, Mondher Yahyaoui
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
In this work four nonplanar wing configurations were studied using the vortex-lattice method: the wing-winglet, the C-wing, the biplane, and the box wing. It has been shown that linear twist, which is more practical in aeronautical construction, is more than adequate to achieve the higher values of span efficiency factor obtained by a completely optimized twist distribution along the span camber, the latter being in general highly varying and thus not very practical. It has also been shown that moderate sweep can slightly increase the span efficiency factor and further reduce vortex drag. The increase is more important for the …
A New Model For Lifting Condensation Levels Estimation, Nihad E. Daidzic Ph.D., Sc.D.
A New Model For Lifting Condensation Levels Estimation, Nihad E. Daidzic Ph.D., Sc.D.
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Knowledge of and the ability to predict lifting condensation levels (LCL) is important ingredient in weather predictions, cloud formation, planetary albedo and Earth’s energy balance. It is also essential topic in aviation safety and flight operations. In this article, we derive a new model of LCL and compare it to some older commonly-used models. This includes also the recently published Romps’ (2017) model. The new model presented here includes dependence, however weak, of the surface atmospheric pressure and the specific humidity on the LCL height and temperature. Such is not the case with widely used models and expressions by Espy …
A Thrust Equation Treats Propellers And Rotors As Aerodynamic Cycles And Calculates Their Thrust Without Resorting To The Blade Element Method, Phillip -. Burgers
A Thrust Equation Treats Propellers And Rotors As Aerodynamic Cycles And Calculates Their Thrust Without Resorting To The Blade Element Method, Phillip -. Burgers
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The lift generated by a translating wing of known translational speed, lift coefficient and area is calculated by a simple equation. A propeller or rotor generating thrust share the same aerodynamic principles but their different kinematics cause the calculation of their thrust to be laborious. This paper derives a thrust equation from an algebraic expansion of the Prandtl’s dynamic pressure term q∞by adding the rotational kinetic energy of a propeller or rotor to the existing translational kinetic energy term. This thrust equation can be applied directly to propellers and rotors and assumes these to operate as cycles with …
A Trust In Air Traffic Controllers (T-Atc) Scale, Bradley S. Baugh, Scott R. Winter
A Trust In Air Traffic Controllers (T-Atc) Scale, Bradley S. Baugh, Scott R. Winter
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Trust is a concept that cannot be easily measured. Further, trust is domain-specific. Trust is a foundational aspect of safe flight operations in the National Airspace System, and while there has been much attention to trust in teams and trust in automation, there appears to be a gap in knowledge of a pilot’s trust in air traffic controllers. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Trust in Air Traffic Controllers (T-ATC) scale, a summative scale to measure a pilot’s trust in air traffic controllers. This study followed a three-step methodology. In steps one and two, words …
Computation Of Eclipse Time For Low-Earth Orbiting Small Satellites, Sumanth R M
Computation Of Eclipse Time For Low-Earth Orbiting Small Satellites, Sumanth R M
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
This paper addresses a method for computing eclipse and daylight time for satellites in LEO. Continuous health-monitoring of the satellite is required for the success the mission. For this, the satellites are primarily powered by solar energy but during the eclipse time, the satellite’s functioning is affected as it cannot generate power during this period and also, its temperature drops rapidly. To tackle these issues, computing eclipse time for satellites becomes essential so as to plan for sizing its secondary power source for continuous functioning. In this work, eclipse time is being computed and it is shown that eclipse time …

Abstract. The purpose of this investigation was to assess user preferences for controlling an autonomous system. A comparison using a virtual environment (VE) was made between a joystick based, game controller and a gesture-based system using the leap motion controller. Command functions included basic flight maneuvers and switching between the operator and drone view. Comparisons were made between the control approaches using a representative quadcopter drone. The VE was designed to minimize the cognitive loading and focus on the flight control. It is a physics-based flight simulator built in Unity3D. Participants first spend time familiarizing themselves with the basic controls …

By 2020 all aircraft in United States airspace must use ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) Out. This is a key component of the Next Generation (NextGen) Air Transportation System, which marks the first time all aircraft will be tracked continuously using satellites instead of ground-based radar. Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) in the Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) is a primary NextGen upgrade where digitized automation/information surrounds STARS controllers while controlling aircraft. Applying the SHELL model, the authors analyze human factors changes affecting TRACON controllers from pre-STARS technology through NextGen technologies on performance. Results of an informal survey of STARS …

The phenomenon of sloshing is a substantial challenge in propellant management, particularly in reduced gravity where surface tension-driven flows result in large slosh amplitudes and relatively long decay time scales. Propellant Management Devices (PMDs) such as the rigid baffles and elastomeric membranes are often employed to counteract motion of the free surface. In the present study, we investigate an active PMD that utilizes a free-floating membrane that, under an applied static magnetic field, becomes rigid and suppresses slosh. This semi-rigid structural layer can thereby replace bulky baffle structures and reduce the overall weight of the tank. In this paper, the …
