Optimal Planning For Traffic Signal Alternative Power Sources In Signal Network, Mo Zhao, Anuj Sharma Mar 2016

Optimal Planning For Traffic Signal Alternative Power Sources In Signal Network, Mo Zhao, Anuj Sharma

Mo Zhao

Dark signals and flash operation during traffic signal malfunction can degrade the efficiency and safety at an intersection warranting a signalized control. Alternative power sources, such as an uninterruptable power supply system, can provide power protection as well as power back-up to the traffic control systems. The policy makers, with limited budgets and unlimited demands, need a tool to choose signalized intersections that can be provided with backup power. They also need to decide the battery capacity at these intersections. At present, there exists no such tool that can help to make an optimal choice for capacity and installation of …

Impact Of The Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Plant In Warsaw On Air Quality, Robert Oleniacz Dec 2014

Impact Of The Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Plant In Warsaw On Air Quality, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

The only Polish municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator has been operating within the Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Plant in Warsaw since 2000. In the paper selected results of the air quality impact assessment for this incinerator during an operating period of one year (2008) are presented. With respect to the incinerated waste amounts and emission levels, the analysed period can be considered typical for this facility. Assessment of the air quality impact was carried out by assessing air pollutant emissions in reference to the applicable emission limit values and by modeling atmospheric dispersion of these pollutants. It has been found …

The Protection Engineer is concerned with limiting the effects of disturbances in a power system. These disturbances, if allowed to persist, may damage plant and interrupt the supply of electric energy. They are described as faults (short and open circuits) or power swings, and result from natural hazards (for instance lightning), plant failure or human error. To facilitate rapid removal of a disturbance from a power system, the system is divided into 'protection zones'. Protection relays monitor the system quantities (current and voltage) appearing in these zones. If a fault occurs inside a zone, the relays operate to isolate the …

Grid Connected Roof Top Solar Power Generation: A Review, Radhey Shyam Meena

Radhey Shyam Meena

India is blessed with rich solar energy and if exploited efficiently, the country has the potential of producing trillionkilowatts of electricity. Sunlight is converted to electricity directly when made to fall on solar photovoltaic (SPV) modules. Systems /devices are made for various applications based on SPV modules connected with suitably designed power conditioning units for meeting electricity requirements. These systems/devices are designed to work in offgrid mode (usually supported with batteries to allow use when sunlight is low or during night). In recent years solar PV systems became viable and attractive. Utility scale plants are being set up worldwide with …

Mathematical Analysis Of Truncated Dodecahedron By H.C. Rajpoot, Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr Dec 2014

Mathematical Analysis Of Truncated Dodecahedron By H.C. Rajpoot, Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr

Harish Chandra Rajpoot H.C. Rajpoot

All the important parameters of a truncated dodecahedron (having 20 congruent equilateral triangular & 12 congruent regular decagonal faces each of equal edge length) such as normal distances & solid angles subtended by the faces, inner radius, outer radius, mean radius, surface area & volume have been calculated by using HCR's formula for regular polyhedrons. This formula is a generalized dimensional formula which is applied on any of the five platonic solids i.e. reguler tetrahedron, regular hexahedron (cube), regular octahedron, regular dodecahedron & regular icosahedron to calculate their important parameters. It can also be used in analysis, designing & modelling …

Static Security Enhancement And Loss Minimization Using A Simulated Annealing Based Approach, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz Dec 2014

Static Security Enhancement And Loss Minimization Using A Simulated Annealing Based Approach, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz

Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz

A developed algorithm for optimal placement and sizing of thyristor controlled series capacitors (TCSC’s) for enhancing the static security of power system and minimizing the overall power system loss is presented in this paper. A procedure to determine the optimal locations and sizes of the thyristor controlled series capacitors is illustrated and presented. The locations are determined by evaluating contingency sensitivity index (CSI) for a given power system branch for a given number of contingencies. Optimal sizes of TCSC’s are determined by the optimization technique of simulated annealing (SA), where TCSC’s settings are chosen to minimize the overall power system …

Energy Conservation Day: Symbolism Doesn’T Pay, Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan Dec 2014

Energy Conservation Day: Symbolism Doesn’T Pay, Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan

Hippu Salk Kristle Nathan

The much publicised panting competition at school level on the occasion of Energy Conservation Day was a good effort to send message to consumers to influence their energy consumption behaviour. But the effect is minuscule.

As a child one might have walked or cycled to school. But as a breadwinner, once energy related decisions largely get influenced by one's income level and opportunities and restrictions.

Optimal Scheduling Of A Microgrid With Demand Response Resources, Daniela Proto, Guido Carpinelli, Fabio Mottola

Daniela Proto

A larger penetration of plug-in electric vehicle (EV) fleets and of data centres in the microgrids (μGs) is foreseeable in the near future. Their presence and the presence of distributed generation (DG) units represent a challenge for system operators in that they must identify approaches for using these distributed resources that allow them to operate the grid in a more efficient and economical way. With particular reference to EVs and data centres, it must be noted that they are equipped with storage devices that potentially could result in the modification of the daily load profile of μGs by shifting peak …

Developing Professional Skills In Stem Students: Data Information Literacy, Lisa Zilinski, Megan R. Sapp Nelson, Amy S. Van Epps

Lisa Zilinski

Undergraduate STEM students are increasingly expected to have some data use skills upon graduation, whether they pursue post-graduate education or move into industry. This project was an initial foray into the application of data information literacy competencies to training undergraduate students to identify markers of data and information quality. The data consumer training appeared within two courses to help students evaluate data objects, including databases and datasets available on the Internet. The application of the Data Credibility Checklist provides a foundation for developing data reuse competencies. Based upon the initial presentation of the content, it became obvious that students need …

Creating A Stem Identity: Investment With Return, Janet Callahan, Patricia Pyke, Susan Shadle, R. Eric Landrum

R. Eric Landrum

Establishing a strong STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) identity at Boise State University, a metropolitan campus with approximately 3,655 undergraduate STEM students and a total undergraduate enrollment of approximately 19,042 (16,136 FTE) has been an important step toward creating a climate conducive to facilitating fundamental change. Examples of such change include building collaborations among faculty within and across departments, establishing the identity of students as part of a community beyond their chosen major, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of university systems, and perhaps most importantly, developing a framework to think deliberately about ways to effect change. This paper is …

Applicability Of Fluidized Bed Reactor In Recalcitrant Compound Degradation Through Advanced Oxidation Processes: A Review, Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman Dec 2014

Applicability Of Fluidized Bed Reactor In Recalcitrant Compound Degradation Through Advanced Oxidation Processes: A Review, Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman

Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman

Treatment of industrial waste water (e.g. textile waste water, phenol waste water, pharmaceutical etc) faces limitation in conventional treatment procedures. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) do not suffer from the limits of conventional treatment processes and consequently degrade toxic pollutants more efficiently. Complexity is faced in eradicating the restrictions of AOPs such as sludge formation, toxic intermediates formation and high requirement for oxidants. Increased mass-transfer in AOPs is an alternate solution to this problem. AOPs combined with Fluidized bed reactor (FBR) can be a potential choice compared to fixed bed or moving bed reactor, as AOP catalysts life-span last for only …

A Portable Wireless Particulate Sensor System For Continuous Real-Time Environmental Monitoring, James A. Hall Jr., Sin Ming Loo, Dale Stephenson, Ross Butler, Michael Pook, Joshua Kiepert, Jordan Anderson, Nicholas Terrell

Dale J. Stephenson

Airborne particulate matter has been shown to be associated with morbidity and mortality, and may interfere with certain sensitive experiment. Understanding the levels and movements of particulate matter in an enclosed space can lead to a reduction in the impact of this material on health and experimental results. A system of environmental sensors including particulate matter, selected gasses, humidity, temperature, and pressure can be used to assist in tracking air movement, providing real-time mapping of potential contaminants as they move through a space. In this paper we present a system that is capable of sensing these environmental factors, collecting data …

Effect Of Beam-Column Joint Stiffness On The Design Of Beams, Wahid Ferdous Dec 2014

Effect Of Beam-Column Joint Stiffness On The Design Of Beams, Wahid Ferdous

Wahid Ferdous

The infrastructure should be design in such a way that ensures safe, serviceable, durable and economic construction. For the beam design, the joints between beam and column is traditionally considered a rigid connection which actually not fully rigid and therefore accounted an extra moment leading to structural over-design and subsequently higher cost of beam construction. This paper proposed a theoretical model for moment and deflection considering the actual stiffness of beam-column joint rather than traditional concept of rigid connection. A concentrated moving load is applied on the beam with three different support conditions such as fixed both end, simply supported …

H-Matrix-Based Fast Direct Finite Element Solver For Large-Scale Electromagnetic Analysis, Haixin Liu, Dan Jiao Dec 2014

H-Matrix-Based Fast Direct Finite Element Solver For Large-Scale Electromagnetic Analysis, Haixin Liu, Dan Jiao

Haixin Liu

In this work, we prove that the sparse matrix resulting from a finite-element-based analysis of electrodynamic problems can be represented by an H-matrix without any approximation, and the inverse of this sparse matrix has a data-sparse H-matrix approximation with error well controlled. Based on this proof, we develop an H-matrix-based direct finite-element solver of O(kNlogN) memory complexity and O(k2Nlog2N) time complexity for solving electromagnetic problems, where k is a small variable that is adaptively determined based on accuracy requirements, and N is the number of unknowns. Both inversebased and LU-based direct solutions are developed. The LU-based solution is further accelerated …
