Using Bayesian Networks For Candidate Generation In Consistency-Based Diagnosis, Sriram Narasimhan, Ole J. Mengshoel Aug 2008

Using Bayesian Networks For Candidate Generation In Consistency-Based Diagnosis, Sriram Narasimhan, Ole J. Mengshoel

Ole J Mengshoel

Consistency-based diagnosis relies on the computation of discrepancies between model predictions and sensor observations. The traditional assumption that these discrepancies can be detected accurately (by means of thresholding for example) is in many cases reasonable and leads to strong performance. However, in situations of substantial uncertainty (due, for example, to sensor noise or model abstraction), more robust schemes need to be designed to make a binary decision on whether predictions are consistent with observations or not. However, if an accurate binary decision is not made, there are risks of occurrence of false alarms and missed alarms. Moreover when multiple sensors …

Design A Pin Diode Switch For High-Linearity Applications, Chin-Leong Lim

Chin-Leong Lim

This paper describes the semiconductor technology, packaging and characterization of a new PIN diode for switching WCDMA signal up to 10W. PIN semiconductor technology was picked as the basis for this switch because of the various performance and reliability advantages that can be had. A model for the PIN diode is generated based on the measured RF performance. How the various model parameters affect the RF performance is also discussed. This is followed by an application description of a 2.0 GHz switch based on the said model and a discussion of some circuit changes to further improve the performance. The …

A Method For Computing Infiltration And Redistribution In A Discretized Moisture Content Domain, Fred L. Ogden Jul 2008

A Method For Computing Infiltration And Redistribution In A Discretized Moisture Content Domain, Fred L. Ogden

Fred L. Ogden

A new one-dimensional infiltration and redistribution method is proposed as an alternative to the Richards equation (RE) for coupled surface and subsurface models. The proposed method discretizes soil water content into hypothetical hydraulically interacting bins. The entry and propagation of displacement fronts in each bin are simulated by means of explicit infiltration and drainage approximations based on capillary and gravitational driving forces. Wetting front advances within bins create water deficits that are satisfied by capillary-driven interbin flow. The method inherently provides numerical stability by precluding the need to directly estimate nonlinear gradients through numerical schemes. Comparisons of the performance of …

Analytical Study Of Blood Flow With Periodic Body Acceleration In The Presence Of Magnetic Field, Dr. Anil Kumar

Dr. Anil Kumar

In this paper we consider a human body is quite often subjected to the acceleration in the magnetic e#11;ects. The induced magnetic #12;eld is neglected. To account such acceleration can generate signi#12;cant e#11;ects on blood circulation depending on the con#12;guration and geometry of the blood arteries. The current study is related to mathematical model of study of blood ow in presence of magnetic e#11;ects subjected to externally imposed periodic body acceleration. By using the #12;nite Hankel Transforms, an exact solution of steady ow of blood as an incompressible, couple stress uid has been obtained. The results have been compared with …

Investigation Of Stun Guns As Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Sources, George H. Baker, Ryan C. Tuttle

George H Baker

Determined malefactors have demonstrated the use of common systems as effective weapons against civilian infrastructures, e.g. commercial jetliners used as kinetic weapons and cell phones used to trigger explosive devices. This undergraduate research project investigated the possibility of using readily available stun gun devices for electro-magnetic interference with or disruption of personal computers. At present, the system effects of high power electromagnetic sources are well recognized by world scientific and military communities. Former CIA Director John Deutch has said that, "the electron is the ultimate precision-guided weapon."1 There has been much research on the deleterious effects of pulsed voltages and …

Investigation Of Stun Guns As Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (Emi) Sources, George H. Baker, Ryan C. Tuttle

George H Baker

Because the operation and control of most critical infrastructures are highly dependent on electronics, it is important to understand the vulnerability of those electronics to intentional electromagnetic interference (EMI). The possibility of interference using readily available consumer devices is a particular concern. We investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of using compact stun guns to intentionally interfere with electronic systems. Test articles included individual computers and computers networked through a central hub. 60KV and 600KV devices were used in the experiments. Results indicate that stun guns are effective in disabling digital electronic systems.

Report Of The Commission To Assess The Threat To The United States From Emp Attack: Critical National Infrastructures, William R. Graham

George H Baker

The physical and social fabric of the United States is sustained by a system of systems; a complex and dynamic network of interlocking and interdependent infrastructures (“critical national infrastructures”) whose harmonious functioning enables the myriad actions, transactions, and information flow that undergird the orderly conduct of civil society in this country. The vulnerability of these frastructures to threats — deliberate, accidental, and acts of nature — is the focus of greatly heightened concern in the current era, a process accelerated by the events of 9/11 and recent hurricanes, including Katrina and Rita. This report presents the results of the Commission’s …

Summary Of 2008 Homeland Security Symposium At The National Academies: Fostering Public-Private Partnerships, George H. Baker, Cheryl J. Elliott

George H Baker

Recent U.S. high consequence events have made clear the importance of government collaboration with industry. The benefits of such collaboration were clearly seen as a lesson from Hurricane Katrina. The resources owned and controlled by American industry dwarf those available to local, state and even the federal government departments. Better agreements and incentives to bring the full capabilities of industry squarely into the national response agenda will be indispensable in effectively responding to large-scale catastrophes. General Russel Honoré who led the National Guard response to Katrina has said, “We need the partnering between local, state, and federal governments; but the …

Literature, Principle And The Basics Of Network Value Creation In R&D: The Relationship With Economy, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Shamsuddin Ahmed, Zahari Taha

Nader Ale Ebrahim

The internationalization of R&D network is a recent phenomenon. In this knowledge based environment, the driving forces for this phenomenon are digitization, the internet, and high-speed data networks that are keys to address many of the operational issues from design to logistics and distribution. From the other direction to surviving in the highly competitive industry, requires strategies to collaborate with or compete with suitable firms within a network in the New Product Development process. The growing internationalization of R&D activities challenges multinational corporations (MNCs) to formulate technology strategies and manage increasingly diffuse and diverse networks of R&D laboratories and alliances …

R&D Networking And Value Creation In Smes, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Shamsuddin Ahmed, Zahari Taha

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Research and development (R&D) activities are fundamental drivers of value creation in today’s technology-based Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs). Seemingly, a successful R&D is a task of innovation processes and development of R&D networks with allied companies. There is a perceived lack of understanding regarding the importance of SMEs and their need to continuously enhancing their technological capabilities for the purpose of establishing them in dominant market positions. This article presents R&D network issues from the perspective of their impact on value creation in SMEs. The fundamental trend to enable SMEs towards creation of new knowledge and diffuse in and …

Verifying Semantic Business Process Models In Inter-Operation, George Koliadis, Aditya Ghose Jun 2008

Verifying Semantic Business Process Models In Inter-Operation, George Koliadis, Aditya Ghose

Professor Aditya K. Ghose

Process inter-operation is characterized as cooperative interactions among loosely coupled autonomous constituents to adaptively fulfill system-wide purpose. Issues of inconsistency can be anticipated in inter-operating processes given their independent management and design. To reduce inconsistency (that may contribute to failures) effective methods for statically verifying behavioral interoperability are required. This paper contributes a method for practical, semantic verification of interoperating processes (as represented with BPMN models). We provide methods to evaluate consistency during process design where annotation of the immediate effect of tasks and sub-processes has been provided. Furthermore, some guidelines are defined against common models of inter-operation for scoping …

Spatial Resolution Of A Small Cubic Lyso Scintillator Crystal Detector With Depth-Of-Interaction Capabilities In A Small Animal Pet Scanner, L. Perera, M. Lerch, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, S. R. Meikle, J. Chan Jun 2008

Spatial Resolution Of A Small Cubic Lyso Scintillator Crystal Detector With Depth-Of-Interaction Capabilities In A Small Animal Pet Scanner, L. Perera, M. Lerch, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, S. R. Meikle, J. Chan

Anatoly Rozenfeld

Present Positron Emission Tomography (PET) detectors suffer from degradation of the spatial resolution due to the lack of depth-of-interaction (DOI) information leading to uncertainty in deducing the Lines of Response (LOR) between coincident events. The Centre for Medical Radiation Physics at the University of Wollongong has developed a novel detector module which will provide depth of interaction information while retaining the sensitivity of current scanners. This will result in superior imaging together with the ability to locate smaller lesions. This work focuses on preliminary investigations of the suitability of replacing the bulky scintillator crystals and photomultiplier tubes of traditional PET …

Dual Beam Actuation Of Piezoelectric Aln Rf Mems Switches Integrated With Aln Contour-Mode Resonators, Nipun Sinha, Rashed Mahamameed, Chengjie Zuo, Marcelo B. Pisani, Carlos R. Perez, Gianluca Piazza

Nipun Sinha

This work reports on piezoelectric Aluminum Nitride (AlN) based dual-beam RF MEMS switches that have been monolithically integrated with AlN contour-mode resonators. The dual-beam switch design presented in this paper intrinsically compensates for the residual stress in the deposited films, requires low actuation voltage (5-20 V), facilitates active pull-off to open the switch and fast switching times (1 to 2 µsec). This work also presents the combined response (cascaded S-parameters) of a resonator and a switch that were co-fabricated on the same substrate. The response shows that the resonator can be effectively turned on and off by the switch. A …

Magnetospectroscopy Of Be In Gaas , R. A. Lewis, Y. Wang, M. Henini May 2008

Magnetospectroscopy Of Be In Gaas , R. A. Lewis, Y. Wang, M. Henini

Roger A. Lewis

Far-infrared absorption measurements have been made of the Lyman series of the acceptor Be in GaAs up to magnetic fields of 30 T, supplemented by photothermal ionization spectroscopy measurements to 6 T. The results confirm and greatly extend previous work and reveal several phenomena. The strongest component of the G line moves to higher energies and increases in intensity with field. Around 20 T the field dependence of the transition displays a marked kink. At higher fields the dependence of energy on field is linear. This behavior is attributed to unresolved components that change in relative intensity with field and …

Infrared-Active Phonons Of Perovskite Homn/Sub 1-X/Co/Sub X/O/Sub 3/ (X=0--0.8), Feng Gao, Xiaolin Wang, M Mehdi Farhoudi, R. A. Lewis

Roger A. Lewis

Polycrystalline perovskites compounds HoMn/sub 1-x/Co/sub x/O/sub 3/ (x=0--0.8) have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. Here, we used far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy to study infrared active phonon modes and present a comparative analysis of infrared transmission spectra of polycrystalline HoMn/sub 1-x/Co/sub x/O/sub 3/ (x=0--0.8). The data indicated that phonon modes significantly changed with increase of cobalt doping level. Four main bands were assigned as external, torsional, bending and stretching bands. The external vibration energy remain same at /spl omega//sub 1//spl sim/190 cm/sup -1/ for Co doping x/spl les/0.5 and shift to higher energy for x>0.5. Torsional and bending bands exhibit …
