The Restoration Of Lake Waters, Charles James Boyter Jan 1972

The Restoration Of Lake Waters, Charles James Boyter

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Lake restoration procedures are reviewed with the objective of making recommendations toward future lake restorations for central Florida lakes. The progress of drawdown for restoration is examined. A total phosphorus model is developed for Lake Eola to predict the success of the drawdown. No one restoration procedure should be applied to every lake in central Florida. Each situation must be studied separately. It appears that lake drawdown was the best technique to use for Lake Eola. However, the stormwater inputs and free-flowing drains must be purified to insure the success of the drawdown or the Lake will return within the …

An Automated Student Advisement And Projected Course Enrollments, Brian Odell Montgomery Jan 1972

An Automated Student Advisement And Projected Course Enrollments, Brian Odell Montgomery

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

One of the major problems of the modern university is the process of student advisement and course scheduling. The purpose of this paper is to write a computer program which will aid in solving this problem of student advisement and course scheduling for the undergraduate students of the College of Engineering at Florida Technological University. the computer program which is developed in this paper, aids in the problem of student advisement by producing a one page output for each student. This output page, which is separated by department, lists all courses the student has taken and passed, all transfer hours, …

High Pressure Flange Design, Kermit Frederick Allerman Jan 1972

High Pressure Flange Design, Kermit Frederick Allerman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research report summarizes high pressure flange design techniques and considerations utilized by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Florida Research & Development Center, during its development programs for high pressure liquid rocket engines. The report covers: 1) Aspects of cooling, heating, pressure, and external loading with design safety factors 2) Cantilever type flanges optimized for weight 3) Seals and fastener considerations for 6000 psi environment 4) An example high pressure, cryogenic cantilever flange design

Theoretical Predictions Of Flow Profiles In Capillary Blood Vessels, Eileen Hallman Jan 1972

Theoretical Predictions Of Flow Profiles In Capillary Blood Vessels, Eileen Hallman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the nature of blood flow within capillaries by using familiar mathematical techniques. Because the circulatory system is so complex, the fluid dynamics of the system is prefaced by a discussion of the circulatory physiology in terms of geometry and physics. The understanding of the basic structures and functions of the circulatory components necessarily precedes the justification of assumptions. Several mathematical models which attempt to describe the fluid dynamics of blood flow phenomena are presented and discussed. The results of these models are correlated with existing experimental data in order to determine which …

Data Management For A Police Command/Control Simulation Study, Gerald Louis Locasale Jan 1972

Data Management For A Police Command/Control Simulation Study, Gerald Louis Locasale

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this thesis is to aid the Orlando Police Department locate areas of improvement with the effect of reducing the total response time of the Command/Control Center through the application of basic industrial engineering techniques. This work is presented in three major chapters. The first is concerned with the definition of the present operation of the Center, the total scope of each separate function within the Center and the interactions with the general public and other public safety departments. The second chapter develops the studies which provide the input values for the simulation model and the analysis …

Suppression Of Turbofan And Turbojet Engine Generated Noise, Harry David Master Jan 1972

Suppression Of Turbofan And Turbojet Engine Generated Noise, Harry David Master

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Every advance in the transformation of heat energy into mechanical energy has involved a noise problem, and in general it increases with the power production. The jet airplane is a good example: the large-scale turbulence of the exhaust gases in the jet forms an unusually intense source of sound the control of which is quite difficult. The additionally generated fan noises add characteristic fan tones which are particularly noticeable on landing approaches. the human ear is the vulnerable receiver of these noises, and the problem becomes one of deciding how much jet engine noise reduction is required for the comfort …

The Operations Research Approach For An Effective Management Information System, Joel L. Mutzman Jan 1972

The Operations Research Approach For An Effective Management Information System, Joel L. Mutzman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report serves as an overview to the design of an effective Management Information System (MIS) by incorporating the modeling techniques of an Operations Research (OR) approach. It will be shown that the consideration of OR input requirements mixed with the information requirements for a data base existing at the everyday accounting and operational level creates a responsible management control and decision-making tool. This mix of OR and everyday information approach varies as a function of the managerial activities and the organizational level of effort. In lieu of designing a "total" MIS system, MIS designers should structure a loosely connected …

Sinkholes In Florida And Their Effect On Man's Environment, Gregory Jackson Skinner Jan 1972

Sinkholes In Florida And Their Effect On Man's Environment, Gregory Jackson Skinner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The primary reason for making the research study on "Sinkholes in Florida and Their Effect on Man's Environment", is an interest in learning more about this somewhat unique phenomenon and how it is likely to affect man in the future, particularly here in Central Florida. This is significant at this time in view of the large number of existing sinkholes, the frequency of occurrence, the projected population and economic growth, and the possible impact this growth may have on future sinkhole occurrences. The research concentrated on possible causes, effects, frequencies, locations and mean of predicting future sinkhole development. There is …

Conversion And Validation Of Sigart Program, A Progressive Traffic Signal Lights System Computer Model, Dennis F. Troyan Jan 1972

Conversion And Validation Of Sigart Program, A Progressive Traffic Signal Lights System Computer Model, Dennis F. Troyan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research paper was to translate a Computer Model (SIGART), capable of simulating a progressive traffic signal lights system, from Burroughs B5500 FORTRAN II to the IBM 360 FORTRAN IV computer language, to outline the program algorithm, to set up detailed program documentation and to validate this model by applying practical system data. Expansion of the SIGART program by addition of an option to produce a time space plot of the output data utilizing a Calcomp plotter was also to be considered.

Automation In Banking, Donald P. Matteson Jan 1972

Automation In Banking, Donald P. Matteson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

It has been estimated that the Apollo Program, which placed a man on the moon, each year produced enough paper work, that if put on one stack, would reach to the moon. The forthcoming Space Shuttle Program will require even more documentation; however, present plans call for very little paperwork. The necessary documentation will instead be created, updated and retained in a large computer data base with access throughout the country. Present technology will support this system. The banking industry has been faced with a similar problem in the processing of demand deposit records (checks) and other repetitive tasks. Banks …
